On the heels of a 12-1 season and its first BCS Bowl victory in school history, the Kansas football team is ranked 13th in the nation in the preseason USA Today Coaches' Poll released Friday.

Kansas returns 15 starters from last year's team, which defeated Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl and finished the season ranked No. 7 nationally.

Georgia earned the No. 1 spot in Friday's poll, followed by Southern California, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Florida.

KU will also face five teams also ranked in the poll, including Oklahoma (fourth), Missouri (seventh), Texas (10th), Texas Tech (14th) and South Florida (21). Two teams on the Jayhawks' schedule - Nebraska and Colorado - also received votes.

This year's preseason ranking is the fifth in the program's history and first since 1996, when the Jayhawks were picked 25th.

There is no motivation to erase the injustices of last season's ranking like clawing up this poll thru Texas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. The same motivation applies this year as it did last: go out a prove how could you are as a team!

Go 'Hawks!

Its always tougher when you have a bullseye on your back. Consider Boise State's situation. Very much resembled KU's rise out of nowhere. They came back to play a tougher schedule and didnt fare as well, even on the heels of that storied season.

What will become of KU after this year...

I dont know but if we can put two seasons together back to back then we'll have begun something that will be sustainable. Mark Mangino has made a believer out of me, though. He's the right man at the right time.

I feel like wavin the wheat!

At least this year it won't take as long to move up in the rankings if we keep winning. Being the first team to knock off an overated USF team on the road could be quite beneficial.

Hey guys, you had better leave him alone.

He chose a really mean animal for his handle, so I'm figuring he must be a really tough guy.

That's how this whole toughness thing works isn't it? The louder and meaner you talk, the tougher you are?

With regard to team rankings, I tend not to be one to give the whole logic of transitive properties too much weight, but especially out here on the West Coast, I'm getting pretty tired of people talking about how much worse KU's season would have been had they had to play Texas, OU and Texas Tech. Fact: each one of those schools lost to teams that KU beat. Maybe they should be talking about what sort of record The 'Horns, Sooners and Red Raiders would have had if they had to play those Hawks. Less than a month to go! Go Hawks!

Read Steward Mandell's book, "Bowls, Polls & Tattered Souls." Pre-season polls - in fact all polls - genuinely mean absolutely nothing. The public loves and demands rankings but they don't prove anything, in reality.

In college football they matter. They are part of the calculation for the BCS standings. And that poll determines who plays for the national championship. Whether you agree with it or not, in college football, polls matter.

I don't think polls matter just yet. Last year KU probably wouldn't have been favored to win the MAC or the MWC. Same with South Florida. By the end of the year we were in contention to play for a national title. But, last year was also a weird year as far as highly ranked teams getting upset so that helped us move up. This year will probably be a tougher year for teams in our position last year to move up but it's not impossible.
