On the field, the Kansas defense won't change much this Fall. Nine starters return to anchor the unit. But that experienced group is under new management.

More than 95 Kansas University football players are expected to arrive on campus today for the beginning of training camp.

The players will go through meetings, complete physicals and check out equipment. The Jayhawks will hold their first practice of the 2008 season on Saturday and will hold one workout per day until Thursday, when they will have the first of five two-a-day practices scheduled throughout the month.

There will be two practices open to the public during training camp. Fans can watch the Jayhawks work out on Friday, Aug. 8 and Friday, Aug. 15. Both practices are scheduled for 9 a.m.

Kansas will open the season at home against Florida International at 6 p.m. on Aug. 30. Tickets are still available at www.kuathletics.com.

KU defense returns 9 starters from last season

Aqib Talib and James McClinton are gone. Luckily for the KU defense, there are nine other guys waiting to take over leadership roles in 2008.

Suggestion for the LJW:

Buy Doogie a pair of shorts and sneakers.

Have Doogie get a physical and sign a waiver.

Then get Mangino's permission to have NooB Doogie suit up for conditioning drills for one complete set of two-a-days.

Don't put him with the QB's or the Kicker.

Have him workout with all the LINEMEN and LINEBACKERS!!

No need for Doogie to attend any playbook, gameplan, or film sessions. Mangino won't want to provide that level of access, and I don't blame him. However, I'd love to see a few photos of Doogie trying to sprint up that new ramp. I bet lil flyweight Doogie will struggle more than 250lb and bigger lineman. Let the little snot-nosed kid get a first hand tiny taste of the work and effort real football players have to go through.

No need to have Doogie get killed by participating in full contact drills. The cleaning staff has enough to clean up without hosing Dooger's bodily fluids off the floor of the new facilities. Let him be waterboy for the men doing the contact drills. At least he'll get the chance to see what it's all about.

Stretching, agility, weightroom, sprints, ramp, stairs, and a multitude of other conditioning drills should all be reasonable for participation.

There would probably be several interesting stories to come out of that experience. KU FB would get good exposure. The LJW might get a reporter that's better educated about Football.

I admit it. I've given Tiny Tot lots of crap.

Now I'm offering a constructive suggestion to try to make the best of what I think is a bad situation.

Do Doogie and the LJW have the cajones to try it? Is the Doogie experiment just an attempt to get the fans to layoff Keegan and Woodling? (You can put it in the bank that they are the nimrods that brought Doogie aboard in the first place.)

I'm not joking this time. This is a serious suggestion. A little sweat and sore muscles would do the runt some good. It certainly would give the runt a chance to "show me" what he's made of. Isn't that what Mizereans always crow about?

Suggestion for 5DecadeHawk:

Stop reading LJW articles if you're going to continue to be an insufferable jacka$$ about them.

Chicago:

Since the LJW has a monopoly for Newspaper coverage
of a town that a care deeply about, I don't have another practical place to turn.

I will read and comment about any article I choose. If you want to create your own censorship newspaper where a certain privileged few are allowed to read, and only people that think exactly like you are allowed to express themselves, be my guest. I won't try to stop you. I'm sure advertisers would think that closed policy would be a true "winning formula."

Nobody is forcing anyone to read my comments. If you don't want to read them. DON'T! I've had plenty of people tell me that they agree. They far outnumber the complainers. They enjoy my attempts to shed light on real problems in the Lawrence media in an entertaining fashion. Sure I ruffle a few feathers, especially those of the entrenched journalists. That's the POINT!

I also have fun. Sports is supposed to be fun, isn't it?

Ohio:
I played every sport possible in High School. Some with more success than others. I competed for 5 different state championships in various sports over the four years and won 2. I was a starter in everything my Senior year. I don't claim to be anybody's All American, though. This limited experience helps me appreciate the athletes with the special talent to perform at a level I could only dream about.

KG:
I'll call things the way I see them. Being a writer takes more than the ability to crackle a keyboard and assemble the words in correct grammatical sentence structure. It takes skill, intelligence, heart, and a passion about what you are writing about. I haven't seen Doogie show that yet. Maybe he will? I don't know. It's unrealistic to expect Doogie to have a passion about Kansas. He's new, and from the wrong side of the state line. It IS reasonable to expect that he has a passion about the sport overall, and for his writing about it. KU has a special set of athletes. Some of the best in the country. Doogie seems to be taking a nap, or at least helping the reader take one.

Generic articles simply don't do it for me. I want to read an article and get information and perspective that I didn't have before I read it. It helps if the information is presented in an entertaining format. I'd like for a reporter to ask questions that help get a quality response from the interviewee. I'd like to get an insight into who the article is about, not just the statistics that I can look up on 100 different websites or in the Media Guide.

A true journalist would understand that getting up close to the people that he's covering would be extremely valuable. Sharing an experience where everyone is suffering together is a powerful way to do that.

Football is as much about hard work and sweat as it is about fancy pass plays. Doogie needs to get dirty in the middle of it and bring that to his writing. I'm actually trying to help the little squirt.

Fair enough 5Decade.

My problem isn't that you take issue with online articles, it's that you take issue with them based solely on the background of the writer. Dugan's articles are written no differently than by the previous beat writers. They are typically short, with little insight, but keep us informed of the basic day-to-day goings on. That's all they've ever been and ever will be.

If he was an alum of ANY other school, we wouldn't even be having this discussion. Some folks have an issue with it, but they've made their point. Rehashing it every day isn't going to change anything.

Chicago:

I make plenty of jokes at the expense of Doogie's alma matre. I'll grant you that. That's part of the rivalry. You'll notice that I don't get vulgar about it. (and violate the LJW written policy like some do.) I have no intention of stopping my good natured but hard hitting ribbing.

My comments about shallow writing and/or poor local perspective in articles go far deeper.

My comments about Doogie are primarily based on his thus far inability to demonstrate detailed knowledge of the game that he's covering. They are an attempt to get him to try harder to get to know this team, it's coaches, AND THIS COMMUNITY and share it with the rest of us. Don't forget, when he introduced himself he practically begged for the harassment, but also asked about what we wanted to read.

If he's going to be a beat writer, he needs to know his beat. Inside and out. He needs to know the people well. He needs to go beyond the obvious statistics that are posted everywhere. How else can he pick up on subtle cues that a player might be hurting, but fighting through it? Will he dig inside to see who the young developing stars are going to be for next year? Will he know what player throws the perfect block to break open a play? Will he know who is laying it all out anonymously in practice every day so that the starters will be prepared the best they can be? You don't get that information from a stat sheet.

Doogie's hiring was a lame attempt by the LJW Sports leadership to create controversy in hopes that it would suck in more readers, largely from the Mizery side, but also by inflaming the locals. They're trying to cash in on the current state of the FB rivalry.

It's a blatant attempt to ignore the local population in an effort to expand to more transient readership. It's a monstrous mistake.

It's bad for Lawrence.

It's bad for KU.

It's always bad business to alienate the most loyal customers of a business. It's bad for the LJW.

The real question is whether Doogie is going to play the patsy, or is he going to take the challenge and blow us away with writing skill?

So far. "Eh" Patsy.

Thanks, 5DecadeHawk. It's interesting to know the background of some of the posters. I'm from a small HS so I did football 4yrs, track 4ys, bb 1yr, plus several different rec league sports as an adult.

I'm guessing a lot of sports writers/reporters didn't play organized sports at all, however, so that alone does not make it a requirement to appreciate the challenges. I'm doubting that Tim Kurchin, Bob Costas, Mitch Albom, or John Clayton, were big stars on any team. For that matter, I doubt Suzy Kolber, Michele Tafoya, or Erin Andrews strapped on a football helmet for real.

You don't always have to live it to learn it.

The LJWorld does a great job. Kansas City only has one major daily, and I've just about given up reading their online edition because the LJWorld and its readers are friendlier to KU and the Jayhawks.
