Today, on the one-month anniversary of Kansas University's NCAA basketball championship victory over Memphis, Bill Self returns to the site of the Jayhawks' first- and second-round tournament victories.
Self, KU's fifth-year coach, will be featured speaker at the 54th-annual B'nai B'rith charity sports banquet at Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb., site of momentum-building victories over Portland State and UNLV.
Self, 45, and owner of one national title, was asked by the Omaha World-Herald how long he wants to remain in coaching. Self was informed by the paper University of Nebraska coaching legend Tom Osborne retired at 60.
"That's still a long time," Self said. "I think you'll hit the wall eventually. You've got to run at a pretty fast pace for a long time. To keep getting good players and having success, you have to live in the fast lane for work. I see myself as being a long-timer, but not a real long-timer."

If the next 15 years are like the first 5, I'll take it.

No "oops". That is a long time. At five years, isn't Coach Self only second to Rick Barnes in B12 tenure?

I think Self and Scott Drew at Baylor came into the conference in the same season, but Drew didn't come on board until August, so Self would have him by a couple of months (and a lot better circumstances).

Nowhere in the article, and presumably in the whole interview, did Self say he plans to coach 15 more years. He didn't make a commitment in any way. He was just going with the flow on the interviewer who suggested that Tom Osborne retired at 60, and then the writer of the article deduced that Self MIGHT coach 15 more years, based on his age. Slow news day at the LJW.

A very slow day... kind of a pointless article, don't you think?

Next they'll be writing that Coach Mangino--God bless his health--is planning to coach 5 more years based on his life expectancy.

That's right KU, nowhere in the article did Self say anything about coaching 15 more years! You guys at the LJW are pretty desperate aren't you?? You pulled that part about the Nebraska coach out of nowhere and somehow twisted that around to sound like Self will be here for 15 years. Wow.

This is an unrelated question but does anyone know if by some chance arthur and chalmers wanted to return (due to an injury or whatever reason) would it be possible? Would only one be able to return due to the signing of Taylor?

in related news, j'mison morgan has not committed to either KU or UCLA, mario chalmers has not hired an agent nor decided to come back to KU for his senior season, and tom osborne is not tipping his hand as to who he voted for on "american idol." more news as it becomes available, or as we come up with it.

For those of you griping about this article as "pointless," be reminded that you actually read it and commented on it. The Journal-World writes articles on KU basketball nearly every day because we readers expect it. We lap it up because we are addicted. Be thankful.

Stebbins, yes we read the article but we won't know that it's pointless until we've read it all the way through. There is absolutely no factual basis for Self staying 15 years; they pulled that part out of nowhere. Do you at least agree w/that?

ChicagoJHawk, I agree with you, sort of. The factual basis may be tenuous, but they're doing what journalists do: they're speculating. If anything, the headline is misleading - when the Omaha paper tried in a roundabout way to pin Self down on how long he was staying, he seemed to say 15 years is too long, but the LJW headline implies that he thinks otherwise.

I don't so much have a problem with the article as I do with the headline--and this is a continuing problem for the J-W. I don't understand why they so consistently feel the need to put in completely misleading headlines, and I find it quite irritating.
Guys, PLEASE put a headline that fits what the article is actually saying!!!!! This headline makes it sound like Self just signed a 15-year contract.

I don't agree that the headline suggests Self signed a 15-year contract, but I do agree that it's misleading (and that this isn't the first time such a thing has happened).
I took the headline to mean Self wouldn't stay longer than 15 years, and while that's a fair inference to be taken from his statement, I have a feeling, even from just reading the quote in the article, that it doesn't completely capture the context in which Self made it.
I understand the need to put out at least one KU basketball article a day, but I would encourage the LJW to be a little more discerning about how it goes about doing it.

To even ask anyone what they will want to do 15 years from now is stupid.
