Kansas guard Rodrick Stewart (5) pounds his fist on the ground as coach Bill Self and trainers tend to Stewart's right knee. Stewart fractured his right kneecap during a dunk drill, ending his season.

— KU senior guard Rodrick Stewart was wheeled off the Alamodome court Friday afternooon during the Jayhawks' open practice after fracturing his knee cap.

Stewart's knee was covered with a brace, and KU coach Bill Self said that surgery would be performed once the team got back to Lawrence.

"I'm having a hard time dealing with it," Self said. "He's a fifth-year senior. He'll never have a chance to run out of the tunnel at the Final Four again. But he'll delay the surgery until next weeek so he can be with his teammates and support them here."

The injury occurred when Stewart was taking off for a dunk. He was then on the ground in pain for about 10 minutes.

On the season, Stewart has appeared in 33 games, averaging 2.9 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. For more on this story, log back onto KUSports.com.

Coach also said he told the freshman go out and dunk and next thing you know, Rod was down. Coach sounded a little disappointed that he was out there in the first place.

Wow, hard to imagine how bad that must feel for him. He had a tough career and playing in the final four would be a great way to end it. But now not only does he not get to play in it, he doesn't get to watch from the bench either?

Yikes...

This is a bad break both literally and figuratively. Man, Rod has had a rough couple of months. There's no good that comes out of losing a guy like that. If our boys needed any extra motivation, then there it is.

I guess we'll find out of the PT Case and Tyrel got during Rod's illness earlier in the tourney will pay off. What we need more than anything is solid defense against UNC's wings, who are a little taller and more athletic than Case and Reed.

djkc........If a guy breaks a kneecap jumping for a shot, it was just destiny or fate or whatevery you want to call it. Unfortunate.

Sometimes when a mafia hitman TRIES to break a guy's kneecaps he fails, so that shows you how hard it is. (Not that I know any mafia hitmen!)

It popped when he went up. That could have happened on a layup, jumpshot, dribble drive, anything. It's sad because a lot of people would say that he was being stupid, but he wasn't doing anything absurd. He was jumping, like he's done probably a million times. As soon as he left the floor it popped and that was it. Very sad. I was hoping Rod had a big weekend this weekend.

No, no, no. This is absolutely no way for the senior to go out. How he must have dreamed of playing in the Final Four, and now to have that opportunity ripped away from him is horrible.

Somewhere out there, Archie Marshall is having flashbacks...

djkc28, it's a contact sport. Perhaps you've played them at some point in your life? People get injured. It's something that happens when you get out of your chair, quit ranting on boards and go outside. You should try it sometime.

Let's lay off the poor guy and keep sending the good karma towards the Hawks.

I watched the video twice, and I'm just not sure how he could have broken his knee by slipping on a wet spot. I could see where he might have torn his ACL, but a broken kneecap by slipping on a wet spot? It doesn't make sense to me. But then I've never had any sports injuries...

The Alamodome had better keep their floor dry this weekend.

March madness is not just about being good, or about matchups, it's also about being lucky.
The Jayhawk nation suffers with you Rod. To work so hard for three years just for this opportunity only to have it snatched away will hurt far more (in the future) than the pain of your knee now.

Been an unusually tough year for the Hawks. ACL, Stress fractures, badly sprained ankles, bruised knee, pulled muscles, and sickness at tournement time. And we are still in the hunt. Way to go Bill, way to go team!

Cruel. That is the best word I've heard to describe this. Rod has had quite a tough March. We could have used his athleticism and experience against UNC, but I do hope the players respond and win this one for him.

Greg Doyel's take on some of the stuff going on at the Final Four right now, including Rodrick Stewart. I did see the Capital-Journal's photo of Stewart's knee, and it is gut-wrenching. Viewer discretion advised.

Stewart probably had a hairline fracture in his kneecap before today and the stress from pushing off to dunk just broke it. I'm not a doctor and I don't play one on TV, but I don't see any other way it could have broken the kneecap because he didn't strike it on anything.

Very unfortunate. Rod had contributed more than we can imagine in practice for 3 years with his physicality, defense and his positive presence. Added incentive to win a championship?

What a sad occurence. Almost NO drop-off defensively when he subs in for Rush...now its up to smaller guards. But so much about basketball--Rodrick has to be feeling so many emotions...I am so sorry this happened. My heart goes out to him!
