Richard Fischer 8 years, 3 months ago

Hopefully Mangino hasn't had a garage sell yet and has some KU gear left to give him.

LAJayhawk 8 years, 3 months ago

My "Our Coach Can Eat Your Coach" T-shirt just became relevant again!

Bet you anything you and your wife are fatter than her is.

Keith Conklin 8 years, 3 months ago

Mangino clothes would still look big on Weis. Never realized how big Weis is still Mangino got that size a bus can't mess with. ROCK CHALK FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Geezer 8 years, 3 months ago

My honest opinion is that Zenger had to put butts in the Stadium and Charley probably sells more tickets than anyone that we could have hired. How long he stays or how much he can win here remains to be seen.

lurkerhawk 8 years, 3 months ago

Hopefully, he won't stay too long. That means he was successful and got the job done!

Winning puts fans in the seats. This hire is a good start.

Can't wait to see who he brings in as coordinators!

Charlie Weis to x high school football player, "I will get you to the NFL and you will play right away."

squintseugene1 8 years, 3 months ago

is that really what u care about these are still kids we should still be more worried about. however charlie weis while at ND all his students graduated. i just think we should get our priorities straight

dewclw 8 years, 3 months ago

Beg to differ. They are not kids. Many of those 18, 19 year olds got drafted and went to Vietnam and gave their lives. They are someones child but they are adult children. As far as people worried about winning and having the school/ team they follow and cheer for be competitive, they have that right. A team/ school's success on the field can only be a success if they are successful in the classroom first. Accepting losing is no way to set an example to all students.

It remains to be seen if he can recruit. He had great success his first two years at Notre Dame, during which time one would assume that the majority of the team had been recruited by the prior regime. His W-L record tailed off for his last three years, when the majority of the players were probably his recruits.

The guy definitely knows the game of football, especially on the offensive end. Whether he has the ability to succeed in other aspects of the college game--recruiting and generally running the program--remains to be seen. But here, some strong assistants can go a long way in covering Coach Weis's shortcomings and/or lack of interest.

I can't say I don't like the hire. Offense puts butts in the seats, and given his pedigree, hiring a "name brand" is the shot in the arm this flailing program needed.

Congratulations, Coach, and welcome aboard. Its good to have you as a Jayhawk.

Ambivalence . . . a m b i v a l e n c e

Well, I'll be dim dum double damned !

I've gotten so comfortable in my smug condescension when discussing him and ND, I'm not sure how long it will take to retrieve my lower jaw and begin a rational assessment of my opinion.

I knew our intrepid SZ was out scouring the hinterlands for our best "fit", and now feel like there must be some deep ruts in the left field corner at Hoglund Ballpark. Then again, Ben Hill Griffin Stadium may be the place with disturbed sod (turf?)

He took ND from some serious doldrums to winning (54%) again, and these days that means a bowl game more than half the time . . .

I keep saying I have faith in Sheahon, and that's where I'll leave it for a while.

What are the odds Coach Mitchell and Coach Beaty are retained? They do a heck of a job

Bill Kackley 8 years, 3 months ago

I really hope so. The AD should have done that under the table and told the new coach after he got to KU.

rhollinshed 8 years, 3 months ago

Heck of a hire!! I think SZ hit a home run! We've got a proven winner. I'm pissed at 610 sports right now who are trying to ruin his character even before he has made it to Lawrence. This is not about the chiefs and their baggage, or how he left Florida. It is about The University of Kansas........now a football school! Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

johnnyphoton 8 years, 3 months ago

610 sports is not impressing me either. Thanks for this post.

Any station associated with Nick Wrong has no credibility whatsoever.

optichawk 8 years, 3 months ago

He can coach, get good assistants, can recruite and runs a pro style offense that players who can play on Sunday, want to play in on Saturday... so they are ready come draft day. Winner + Chicken Diner (literally)!!

kellerman411 8 years, 3 months ago

If the chicken dinner thing was a fat joke, I love it!!!

cardinco 8 years, 3 months ago

Weis brings instant credibility. Under the circumstances, I'll take that.

TwistedFish31 8 years, 3 months ago

Considering the state of our program, I believe that Charlie Weis was a very smart hire. We did not need another mid major experiment. Weis is a "name" with credentials in both college and the NFL. Maybe his tenure at Notre Dame wasn't good enough for their standards but it would be here. No one can say anything negative about his record in the NFL. Obtain a Great DC and give him time to bring in recruits...I like Zenger's decision.

Kenny Terry 8 years, 3 months ago

Zenger must have some good ties somewhere, to get a big name coach to come to Kansas. Matt was always sayin when this search was going on that it could be a name no one is talking about. He was right and this was definitely out of left field. Anyways am excited about the hire and hope weis can do good things with the team

TexasHawk44 8 years, 3 months ago

Optichawk, I believe you meant "chicken dinner" or maybe you meant "whiner + chicken diner" I don't think Charlie could eat an entire diner. But he might be whining when he sees what Gill left in the fridge. Mangino, he probably could have eaten an entire diner though.
Let's just hope you got the "winner" part of your post right (literally!)

I think it was a good hire. One game over .500 would look pretty good after Gill. Question is can be recruit to a destination like KU? Damn sure he can coach.

ironhead80 8 years, 3 months ago

I feel good about Zenger makeing this hire, he is a smart man. Zenger knows enough about the stories of coach Weis in how he treats people as well as his coaching successes, There is always to sides to a story, nobody is perfect and I'll leave it like that! I know he will probably get paid somewhere in the 3 mil range annually. And I'am sure Zenger will protect KU's interest when Weis signs the contract about leaving early.I really hope coach Weis has a burning hunger to see KU as a powerhouse and he will work his butt off to see this thru. I predict he will hire coach leavitt as the def.coordinator. GOD! I hope he does'nt take KU for a ride! He has my support!

kellerman411 8 years, 3 months ago

NFL connections + credibility + proven performance = strong recruiting = Winning

2012 = bowl game 2013 = better bowl game 2014 = BCS bowl game 2015 = Charlie Weis gone...

hawkbono1313 8 years, 3 months ago

Charlie know your role. Bill Self is king. Football is second.

Kenneth Hillman 8 years, 3 months ago

Welcome to KU Coach Weis. Feels good to say that. Watching the college football awards right now and it would be great to see some Jayhawks on that stage. If Baylor can do it, we can. Really like this hire and hopefully Coach Weis will hire a great DC. Kick some a$$, put butts in the seats, and get that f'n track removed.

I have never seen this much buzz about KU football. Make it happen.

Great job SZ

Rock Chalk!!

trout984bum 8 years, 3 months ago

+1 on the track! That kills almost as much potential credibility as does our current record. Welcome to Lawrence Coach Weis! We're behind you!!!

Pitthawk34 8 years, 3 months ago

Talk is talk, if we are behind him time to start buying season tickets. Mine were bought today. Buy Buy Buy

Jeff Worthington 8 years, 3 months ago

As of about 9 PM on December 16th, I believe Turner Gill has about 384 family members that still check out kusports.com

dewclw 8 years, 3 months ago

Weis is wise. Sorry, I couldn't resist. I thought I might show some support for the Weis hire. I agree that it remains to be seen whether he'll be a success or not but he has already gotten many fans excited on what might happen. He has several big time recruits interested in coming to KU as well as already getting commitments from a couple in his first week. Not bad. Since some of you are college football geniuses or at least think you are, put sock in it and wait to see what happens. Negative people suck. Over 100 years of having a losing football program at KU might come to end during the Charlie Weis tenure so give it a chance. For those of you who do nothing bad mouth KU football, and the new coach, all I can say is...go follow MU, they always have room for whiners.
