Cole struggled early. Sherron has been shooting poorly. I have to give my vote to Mr. consistency: McM
Cole could essentially average 0 points per game and deserve this purely for his defensive presence. Just having that guy saves 10-15 points per game, even without his blocks. Just from shots that he alters that get missed.
My reason behind voting for Marcus is we had Sherron and Aldrich last year and were successful, but could only get so far. The emergence of McM has taken this team to the next level. We needed that third scorer and he is it. Without him, Aldrich would be triple teamed everytime. having McM as a consistent threat makes the team better.
Now, usually, a team goes as their MVP goes. KU can win if McM or Aldrich have a bad/off night. If Sherron isn't making his shots early, the team seems to play a little flatter. That hasn't been the case in the last few games during Sherron's slump, but this team has had that tendency. That would be the best argument for Sherron.
Defensively, we are the team that we are because of Aldrich. His presence around the rim changes everything, especially in the first 5 minutes of the game. But his lack of offensive moves and domination in the post keep him a little lower on my list.
I couldn't pick one. Marcus has really stepped it up this year. Sherron is the heart of our team and our offense. Cole is the backbone of our defense and consistently gets double teamed in the blocks, opening the floor for everyone else. Each has carried us in games where the others didn't have stellar games. We wouldn't be where we are if each of them hadn't given us all they had, each and every game. Great job guys, thanks.
It's hard for me to not vote for Sherron just because of what Sherron has meant to this program for four seasons. Sherron is the heart and soul of this team. He has carried us when no one else could. But in Big 12 play he has been the third best player on the team.
What Marcus Morris has done since conference play kicked off has been great, but Cole is the big difference maker. Cole has been so consistent down the stretch in conference play the past 8 or 10 games. So has Marcus, but Cole's impact is huge because you can count on a double double and 4 or 5 blocks, decent free throw shooting, good ball control, flat out cleaning up the glass, and making the other teams' inside play a non-factor.
In my mind it's a no brainer.
Collins is outstanding, and I hope he makes the All American team as well as the Big 12 All Stars, but even he can't duplicate Aldrich's performances. He can't block shots or rebound like the man, and he doesn't intimidate men driving to the basket. I would put Aldrich on all the all star teams ahead of Collins. I just think both deserve them.
One more year, Cole.
Screw it, I'm giving it to Collins because I have a man crush on him. There, I said it...but in all seriousness, I would give it to Sherron. Call it a lifetime-acheivement award if you want, but we haven't lost a Big XII game yet this year and that reflects Collins' prowess as a leader just as much as it reflects our talent. Oh, and he leads the team in scoring and assists if anyone forgot.
My Big XII first team: Sherron Collins, Denis Clemente, James Anderson, Marcus Morris, Cole Aldrich.
I know Damion James will get voted ahead of Marcus but I think James' attitude has soured on his teammates and he has failed in late-game situations.
It's a tossup between Sherron and Cole, but it's been so long since we had a big man as good as Cole, he feels more valuable. I LOVE the way he wrestles the ball and whips it down court! And the blocked shots! Oh, the blocked shots!
I have to vote for Marcus for the way he has stepped up mainly. It could go either way but, facts are facts. I am sure glad to see NEBR. playing the way they have, good to see them on the bottom again.
As much as Marcus has made a difference this year, KU still starts with Cole and Sherron. There is not another point guard in the country that I would take over Sherron, and there is not another big man in the country I would take over Cole.
But if I had to choose just one, it would have to be Cole. Sherron is a superb floor general, but Cole is just such a presence -- defense, shot blocking, rebounding, outlet passing, scoring -- that he literally is a game changer. And I believe if you compared KU's effectiveness with Cole but not Sherron on the floor against KU's effectiveness with Sherron but not Cole on the floor, the data would reveal the comparison would favor Cole.
