The guys (Matt Tait, Eric Sorrentino, Jesse Newell) give their takes on topics surrounding the new Big 12. Should the conference name be changed? Does commissioner Dan Beebe deserve the most credit for saving the league? The three also discuss the buzz of the World Cup — vuvuzelas — and decide whether the horns have a place in college football.

I read that part of the agreement that kept Texas from leaving the weak five for the pac 10 was that they got to borrow our National Basketball championship trophy the 2nd and 4th week of every month for their trophy case.
We turn over the Nebraska Colorado exit fine $20million to Texas if they don't meet their revenue goals, who is gaurunteeing Kansas if we don't meet our revenue goals, the answer is no one.
We turn over a portion of our ESPN monday night basketball TV revenue to Texas if they don't mee their revenue goals, who is assuring us or our revenue goals? No one.
But wait, we have six former insider employees getting millions of best seats on scalper web sites for personal gain.
What will we read tomorrow, that the board of regents assigned 1/4 of our annual wheat harvest to UT if the price of oil and gas falls.
the rich get richer.

The Big 12 Commissioner saved his job. I wish I wasn't so cynical. Too much experience does that.

We had vuvuzelas in college back in the late 80s. We called them beer bongs.

So we are subsidizing their school, nice.
bskeet 2 years, 11 months ago
Yes, except subsidies are usually paid by the mightier to the weaker in the spirit of keeping competition and leveling the playing field.
When the weaker are made to pay the more powerful, I believe the word is extortion.

Here is the wikipedia definition of Subsidy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subsidy
And here is Extortion: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extortion Perhaps a bit too strong a word for this situation since no one is suggesting this is an unlawful or criminal arrangement.
Coercion appears to be a bit more appropriate term for what happened: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coercion

I don't like the deal any better than some people but......
We only have ourselves to blame. When I was going to school the great Roy Williams told Bob Fredrick to hire Terry Allen. Giving most of the University permission to ignore football for another 5 years when things were gettting better with Mason right before he left.
I want this paper, this administration and every one of our coaches to make this point:
"You cannot be a University of Kansas Athletics fan if you do not go to Football games, period." The next 3-5 years demands that we win on and off the field in this sport.
I live in Nebraska....but if I lived in Kansas and worked with a bunch of KU fans I would be constantly telling them that thier lack of suport for the Football team almost killed our Basketball team. All those banners didn't buy us a seat anyone's table. Stop rolling your eyes at the football fans and join them.

NEJhawk, That is a very good way of looking at it. Yes, it would have hurt bball if we had ended up in the Mtn West. If we would have been part of the Pac 16 our football never would have made it out of the cellar. Imagine, Texas, OU, Arizona, Arizona State, OSU, TTech, possibly A & M on your schedule every year. Now, with no more Northern division I fear we could have the same results. I know we had to be committed to the long haul to keep this together, but if it does not, that is why I keep looking to the Big East. We would be competitive in football and complemented by very good basketball. It is the best move for both programs. Anything else and one of the programs will suffer. Perhaps someday the Big 10 may come calling and that could work, but I would not count on it. Big East would be a brilliant choice after a few years. I never thought of it until I saw that suggestion on this site and the more I did think of it the more I realized what a great move that would be. Eastern media markets, great Bball and an opportunity to be competitive in football. AND if that conference grows and KU would go with it perhaps that is where Notre Dame will end up if they give up their independence.
