Kansas coach Bill Self talks after his team's 62-55 loss to TCU on Feb. 6, 2013.

KU is lacking block out skills-noted twice in game in OK St on ESPN (Big McLemore)....continues...Obviously big men & others miss Manning & assistant coaches must not be stressing block out on rebounds....Also, Trainer is not getting enough playing time against certain matchups, likewise Ellis-(matchups have to be taken into effect). Self should know that the style that is beating him ---slow down --- Hank Iba-- (alumni of OSU after all)...if team are going to slow down then need to play flawlessly, especially on rebounding. Also, I hope there is not jealousy going on, because it was noted by announcers on ESPN that Elijah J was not having screens set for him...
Go Team (Rock Chalk), & remember to block out on defense -rebounding... noted don't set work it around -touches - just throw up the ball- in slow down type of game ---like the one we watched...
I am surprised that Coach Self--"didn't see it coming". Look at the last 3/4 conference games! The Jayhawks level of play has not been at a top 25 level team.
Man, that was a tough one to watch. The most disappointing thing to me was the complete lack of emotion, energy, excitement, aggressiveness, whatever you want to call it. Even the coaching staff seemed completely emotionless and apathetic.
There is obviously a huge lack of leadership on this team. No one that gets in the other players' faces and encourages (or cajoles) them to get everyone on the team fired up. Last year we had T Rob and Tyshawn. I didn't realize at the time how huge their confidence and presence was to the chemistry of the team. This team needs Releford, Johnson or Withey to step up to that position...but, alas, I don't think any of them have that in them. It is tough for a Frosh to step into that role, but maybe Ben can do it. Especially considering that this is, in effect, his "senior" year. Coach Self has a dilemma that is going to be hard to find an answer to, imho. Confidence is a fragile thing, and these guys have lost it.
I'll admit, there have been times I've gone to the practice range and stripe nearly every shot, stop at the putting green and everything from 10 feet and in goes in.
Step on the first tee and from there on every shot is going sideways and the ball couldn't find the hole even with a seeing eye dog.
Need more emphasis on offense and less on defense. Gotta score to win!
My theory is the "comeback kids" from last season's heroics are basically missing their tough inside/outside "core" of TRob+Tyshawn. Yes, they are gone, but who will step into that role? So far, no one. When it is tuff-helmet time, they become Bradys (hot-potato-pucker guys), not Marcus/TRob/Tyshawn/Sherron/Chalmers type of 'swagger' guys. You guys have touched on the chemistry thing--yes, it is more about team psyche. Who do they look to when its crunch time. Yes, it does start with EJ since he is the Sr. leader, and simply isnt getting it done. All 4 seniors have been role players their whole KU careers. Now we see how they handle and who rises up to this very real adversity. Reinforcements dont show up til summer.
One shot by Releford. He couldn't get rid of the ball fast enough. Talk about senior leadership.
Throw out a zone every now and then. We obviously can't play man to man for a whole game.
Somebody needs to ask Self what is going on with Team Chemistry. Jesse, Tom, somebody...can you ask that question. This team seams broken on the inside.
Jesus people, we're still winning the Big 12. Occasionally, you get dressed up in your clown suit, that's how it goes.
Sit EJ and Rele until they both play with passion on both sides of the ball. The last two games were depressing. Not because we lost but because our seniors didn't seem to have the passion needed to compete at this level.
Swap Rio and AW3 for these guys minutes vs OU. Win or lose I guarantee we have a more inspired performance vs KSU. If we don't then keep em on the bench until they do get it.
Seniors. Last game in AFH is right around the corner. For Rele and EJ the NBA is not an option. This is the biggest stage you will have for basketball moving forward. Embrace it and set your own legacy.
Coach. The team looks weak physically. Lets get the press going. We need to find a way to get some easy baskets as this team needs it. We also should get some guys some more even minutes. Only Mclemore and Withey IMO seem to warrant consistent playing time over 20 min / gm.
I know the bench players will matter more at the end of the year, but it seems to me that the team has lost it flow. With four seniors, maybe publicly humiliating them is not the answer.
There are a great many fingers to point here, Self does not deserve a one of them. He will work it out.
maybe self should return part of his salary or we need manning back
pathetic. no effort, no energy, no want to. no toughness. shall i go...?
no way EJ should start period. his turnovers have sarted the slide. we were up 4 on OK State when he handed them 2 turnovers in last few minutes.. he gave them the goal and confidence going into the half that game.. he misses 2 free throws as the point guard to set the tone for this game and he shoots more 3s than anyone even though he shoots the lowest % of our 4 top guards????? WHY ??? His turnovers are killing us. lower his minutes from 30+ to 20+ till he gets out of slump. tell Releford and B Mac they have to take up the slack and by all means keep K Youngs energy .. these guys have been playing lazy .. lazy passes , lazy D for last 6 games .. now they seem to have lost stamina.. lower the minutes .. maybe they will bring more energy to the minutes they get.. heck if we are going to throw games away ..lets look at White more than desperation... put him in the first half..
UGLIEST ever I've seen in 40 years of watching 'Hawks
We should be playing small with the 4 guards -
Tharpe PG, EJ and McLemore, Releford at the 4, and Withey.
If Tharpe can get us calm and let EJ get his open shots, Young can come in 1st off the bench, followed by Ellis and Traylor.
my cousin was at the game and said self was chewing ass during timeouts.
agree with both statements above. Line-up combinations will be interesting to see going forward. Coach sounds like he doesn't have a lot of confidence in some of the guys at this point. I like bringing KY off the bench to provide a spark of energy....I really hope Perry gets it figured out....His game at Late Night and the first couple of games seemed so smooth...he needs to get some confidence back would like to see him go for 15 next time out.
One thing I noticed during the time outs is that Self was not showing anger at the players. Normally, when the players are making boneheaded plays, he yells at them. Not this time. What is up with that? I know there is a time to yell at kids and there is a time to hold their hands. Is something going on that made him feel the players were too fragile to see him angry? Or was he even angry with them? He said they had a great practice and wasn't expecting this, but seems to me if that was the full story, he would have been ripping into their hides during the time outs!
That said, I love this team and they have my support. I hope they can work out their issues, whatever they are, but regardless, we are all Jayhawks forever.
I respect Self's level headed emotions after wins or losses. His tone sounded the same as if we won.
