I gotta admit, it's hard not to be excited about this change and the potential moving forward. I'm going to say it one last time, then let it rest, because Coach Gill and the entire program under his care deserve the opportunity to look ahead, not behind, but as excited as I am about Coach Gill and the program he will build here, it didn't have to come about this way, and I wish we didn't have this black mark against us, this deserved reputation as a university that will throw a coach under the bus if it suits us. It's bad karma, and I just hope we never have to wonder about a "Curse of the Mangino" haunting KU athletics!
What a bunch of BS. Chuck Long as offensive coordinator? A highly lauded coach? He's been looking for a job for two years since being fired by San Diego State Unviversity for his miserable performance there. They're happy he found a job, they'll be able to pay him less of the contracted salary he's continued to draw for two years while looking for a job. He was a total failure at SDSU! So, combine a 20 win 30 loss coach from a non BCS school with and offensive coordinator who was a total failure as a head coach, and we're going to be Big XII North champs? Big XII champs? National champs? He does a lot of talking the talk, but he sure hasn't walked the walk in his 4 years as a head coach. He'll probably be gone in two years, and Perkins will be gone with him. I suspect the new Chancellor has had a lot to do with this. Possibly she'll be gone too.
Cal Bender.... to say that the race of our Chancellor played a role in the hiring of Gill is absurd. Perhaps that picture of yours is not in jest, but in actuality how you still view the world. I am confident that Perkins looked at the available coaches around the country and made the decision that was best for continuing to build on the foundation that Mangino laid and someone who would be here for a long time. Notice that I said available coaches... Although it would be nice to have brought in someone like Harbaugh, it is unreasonable to believe that he would leave a program he was building and was on the rise to come to a school that has had one "great year" in the past decade. I am not trying to belittle our team or school, but simply am realistic that we are still in a transition phase between cellar dweller of the Big 12 and reaching the goals that Coach Gill laid out in his press conference. Although you attack his unproven record, you have to keep in mind that he was recruiting players to come to Buffalo, and still managed to bring in substantial talent. Given the recent successes of the program, coupled with media exposure and what appears to be a great fire from our coach, we should continue to bring in good talent to grow and develop during their time in Lawrence. I for one am excited about this hiring and look forward to the new direction that the team will take in the upcoming years and feel that most of Jayhawk Nation shares my views.
Whoa, rockchalk_dpu, back up a bit. I did not, nor would I, and if you knew me you would know that I would never interject race into any argument I make, as you have suggested. I'm offended by the suggestion. Actually, I think it all revolves around money. They're going to have to pay off Mangino as well as the new coach. Probably the reason Jim Harbaugh held off signing with a great school like Stanford was to see how much Kansas had to offer. I'd like to know what Gil's salary will be. My entire argument is based on the premise that Perkins hired a coach who has had his chance to prove himself, and in four years he should have been able to do it. He didn't. Now he's brought on board an offensive coordinator who proved that he could not succeed as a head coach. Being a great player doesn't necessarily mean a guy is going to be a great, or even a good coach. The proof is in the pudding, and after 4 years the pudding is out of the oven, An overall record of 20 - 30, against the schools on Buffalo's schedule, with a 4th year of 5 - 7, presents the aroma of a not so good pudding. I've not been a true blue fan of Mangino, but goodness, he was fired for a 5 - 7 record, in a lot tougher competitive arena then the one U of Buffalo is in! My position is that we should have gone after a proven coach and be willing to pay him what he's worth. One has only to look at the competition Buffalo plays in the Mid America Conferenc. It's not impressive, and the record against that competition is even less impressive. But, you're right about at least one thing. It's a done deal, and we have to think positively and hope for the best. I'm printing this to keep for two year, when I'll retrieve it, and hopefully see how wrong I was and I'll shred it. I became a Jayhawk in 1950 and have never waivered in my loyalty, with two degrees from the university. I played with and was good friends with a lot of black players in my years at KU, and in the military, and I think all that gives me the right to be offended when I'm accused of interjecting race into the issue. And I hope no one will do that, ever.
I envy you guys. Gill is gonna make you proud. He brings out the best in people and inspires loyalty that can result in some serious continuity and longevity in the staff, and that is hands down the most important ingredient in long term success in college programs. Let me say again that he will make you proud....promise.
jayhawkinnebr- i don't get it. this guy has character like Tony Dungy and if he can turn Buffalo into a winner or even close to a winner then he can easily turn us into Big 12 champs. And for the comments about the assistant coaches, sure they have bad records as head coaches but thats because the two jobs are really different. You've got to believe in this guy, or atleast give him a chance before you say that he's gunna be fired.
I'm gonna go ahead and put this guy's face on my gameday shirt, because he is the new face of KU football. Which one of you goobers said this guy can't coach? He was the head coach at Buffalo. They play crappy teams in crappy confrences because they ARE a crappy team in a crappy conference. Gill here turned Buffalo into a decent team. 20-30 isn't a good record by our standards, but what he pulled off up there is nothing short of impressive. He managed to recruit to a school that nobody gives 2 and a half mouse turds about! This guy is going to love the attention at KU, and he isn't going to crumble under the spotlight. He's going to take his newly recruited players, make them love him, and kick some big 12 ass. I cannot wait until football season starts back up so Gill can take our program and Turner around! Get it?! Get it?!

His first listed goal for his players is graduation. Solid stuff. We don't want to end up like FSU!
