While the KU-UTEP game is important in the overall Kansas football program, it has a big significance for me, it is bragging rights in the family. Both my brother and sister are UTEP graduates and live in El Paso. My 90 year old mother was raised in Kansas, and is typically a Kansas fan during basketball season. It is going to be interesting who she roots for this coming weekend. Knowing mom, she will stay neutral while the game is in progress, but in her heart she will be rooting for Kansas.

The main connection most KU fans of a certain age probably have with UTEP, other than playing in UTEP's stadium in the Sun Bowl game at the end of the '75 season, is that UTEP, then known as Texas Western, advanced to the final four (which they went on to win) in about '66 or so when KU legend JoJo White was ruled out of bounds nullifying the buzzer beating shot to win the game in the regional final. It is one of the most dramatic scenes in the movie Glory Road, I think it was called, that came out a couple of years ago.

JoJo went on to be a big contributor for the Celtics, as you probably know.

Believe it or not I'm really more of a KU football fan. I'm looking forward to Saturday's game. I really hope we've got our right cornerback situation straightened out by then, because UTEP can definitely throw the ball.

I think with 0:10 left in the game and the score is 34-7 that the bragging rights are with the Jayhawks in the family.
