By the Numbers: Kansas wins 75-70 at Georgetown
We saw some of what we've been waiting for tonight – the freshmen are buying in. Severely outsized whenever (340 lb) Josh Smith was on the court, and playing without key reserve Jamari Traylor, KU belied the appearance of being helpless in the lane. Forcing the ball inside each possession led to many assists by (not-so-)bigs feeding wide open wings and guards for ten 3-pt baskets to G-town's five and, while The Hoyas blocked a number of Jayhawk shots down low, the Jayhawks posted a nine-pt advantage at the charity stripe, hitting 78+% of those opportunities. Defensively, only the behemoth Smith did much damage with a 20-pt night to lead all scorers, but the turnovers he gave up and the minutes catching his breath on the bench were factors in KU maintaining its 2-5 point lead for nearly the entire second half, and near-perfect work at the charity stripe kept the home team at bay down the stretch.
Tough, gritty win and a harbinger of more to come!
