Kansas softball earns upset win over No. 23 Wichita State

By Staff Report     Apr 21, 2021

Behind a complete-game performance in the circle from Kasey Hamilton, the Kansas softball team earned a 5-2 upset victory over No. 23 Wichita State Wednesday night at Arrocha Ballpark.

Hamilton struck out a career-best nine batters and only gave up one walk over seven innings. She gave up two runs on five hits, improving to 5-7 on the year. Wichita State scored both of its runs in the sixth after KU grabbed a 5-0 lead.

Morgyn Wynne and Ashlyn Anderson each recorded two RBIs apiece to lead the way offensively. Wynne and Brittany Jackson were the lone KU players to finish with multiple hits on the night.

Kansas (22-17) scored two runs in the first to take control of the contest early on, starting with a sacrifice fly from Shelby Gayre and a RBI single from Anderson. The Jayhawks added one run in the third and two more in the fourth.

“Our main focus today was to come out more aggressive at the plate,” Kansas coach Jennifer McFalls said in a team release. “We wanted to swing at pitches early in the count, hitting pitches that were strikes and this team did that.”

Kansas will travel to No. 9 Texas for a three-game series this weekend. The series opener is slated for 6 p.m. Friday.
