Still more than a year out from when current high school juniors can first sign with their college football programs of choice, the Kansas coaching staff now has three commitments lined up for the Class of 2022.

Dewuan Mack, a junior defensive back at Lee’s Summit North (Mo.), announced Wednesday night his plan to eventually join the Jayhawks.

As reported by Jon Kirby of Jayhawk Slant, Mack received a scholarship offer from KU the day before deciding to commit. Months back, before the NCAA shut down on-campus recruiting events because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mack attended the program’s junior day this past winter.

“They were the first school to actually take interest in me,” Mack told Jayhawk Slant. “Les Miles has coached Tyrann Mathieu (at LSU) and a lot of guys. I thought, why can't I be one of those guys.”

Recruited by another secondary standout Miles coached at LSU, Chevis Jackson, who is now KU’s defensive backs coach, as well as KU safeties coach Jordan Peterson, Mack said he plays cornerback in high school but could move to safety once he gets to KU.

Rivals has not yet rated Mack, listed at 6 feet and 182 pounds, as a prospect.

The Jayhawks’ first commitments for the 2022 class came in early August from a pair of Arkansas prospects: quarterback Austin Myers and offensive lineman Brock Burns.
