Kansas concluded the Kansas Invitational with a three-set defeat to Syracuse on Sunday afternoon in the Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena. KU finished the tournament 1-2 with a win in its home opener against Morehead State.

In the first set, Kansas and Syracuse battled back and forth. The Jayhawks held a narrow 1-point advantage (21-20) before the Orange mounted a comeback and rattled off 5 consecutive points to take the set.

Set two was more of the same for the two schools with Syracuse claiming a two-set edge after earning the set 31-29. In the final set, Kansas was unable to gain momentum and fell to the Orange by a 25-12 margin to close out the tournament.

Zoe Hill finished with a team-high eight kills, while fellow senior Ashley Smith tallied five. Sara Nielsen was the team leader in assists with 27. Allie Nelson finished with 10 digs.

Kansas (4-4) travels to Las Vegas for the Rebel Challenge and is scheduled to face Arizona State on Friday and UNLV on Saturday.

Last year's record was 15-12, including a victory over Texas, and actually a 6-1 record in the Conference, before Ennis got hurt and everything went into the toilet. The year before it was the same thing.

This team is face it, weak on passing, weak on back line defense, weak on serving and receiving. We rank in the bottom two in almost every category for the teams in our conference.

Let's face it, we have not beaten a team from a power 5 school, so far this year. We lost to Arizona in 3 sets, we lost to Syracuse, a winless team, in 3 sets, we lost to UCF in 3 sets, and we sucked it up and only lost to south Carolina 3-1.

I also don't see a very bright future for next year. Fact is, take out Allie Nelson, Ashley Smith, and most of all Zoe Hill, and there is very little to like about this team. I'm sure the coach has a plan, I just hope it works.

I don't know if Camryn Ellis shot Bechard's dog, or what, but she needs to be out on the floor every set. What gives? And of course we are a little better when Rachel is out on the floor, and finally

If we split our last two games before conference, then we have to win more than half to have a winning season, and it is hard to see how that is going to happen.

Layne, you are spot on.

And so today versus Syracuse (who lost to Morehead State on Friday) we start and finish the first set with 3 freshman on the floor along with our Big 10 castoff setter and lose the first set enroute to getting swept in 3. Definition of insanity???

To be fair Bechard did play a few more veterans today after the first set but not a lot.

Can I get a refund on the remainder of my season tickets???

I hate to think how Baylor is going to embarrass us in 2 weeks on our home floor if the coaches don't right this ship. They can start by by not playing more than one freshman at a time and going back to Ennis as the primary setter.

Amen Bville. There will come a time when Karrier, Hickman, Chiston and van Driel will be a force to be dealt with, but right now, they look out of their league. Hickman simply needs to develop more variety in her kill attempts, she gets returned so many times. Van Driel is not that big, and she has to be smarter about shots, and Karrier is somewhat a defensive liability, and certainly only a substritute player, albeit potentially a great one. Chiston has tremendous spring, but again, variety and pace are lacking. And that is if they even get a decent setting, and that is not just the setter, but also the first pass, which so often is weak.

Honestly Bville, this team needs to play the experienced players. But I fear this is just gonna be a year of going through the motions.

One thing that i have seen no explanation for, is why Jada Burse transferred to Arizona St, a team that we will play this week. That was obviously a very big blow to this team. She would have given us a real 3 option to Smith and Hill, which right now, except for Rachel, we do not really have.

When I noticed at the beginning of the season that Jada wasn't on the roster I searched and finally found that she was at ASU. No mention at all in KUSports.com or KUAthletics.com. At the time I suspected maybe she had a boyfriend at ASU or whatever. She is definitely missed, she was/is a very good player. I wonder how she is able to transfer and play immediately? Grad transfer???
