Kansas volleyball was unable to complete the upset of No. 1-ranked Texas on the road Saturday night, falling in four sets (25-22, 25-17, 25-18, 25-18) at Gregory Gymnasium.

The Jayhawks did manage to take the opening set in surprising fashion, taking the first frame 25-22 and ending on a 5-2 run. However, the Longhorns bounced back in a big way, taking the final three sets. This included the decisive fourth set, as Texas finished off Kansas with a 4-0 run to take the match.

Senior Ashley Smith led the way with 16 kills for Kansas, with freshman Morgan Christon right behind with 11. Senior Allie Nelson also had a team-high 16 digs on the night.

Kansas will finish the regular season on Senior Night against Iowa State at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

I don't subscribe to Longhorn Network so wasn't able to watch the game, just followed along with the "live stats" instead. Layne, why would we go to Smith 47 times? Add to that the 22 attack attempts by Christon and that is 69 attacks from the left side! On the right side Ennis had 18 attempts and in the middle Van Driel and Langs had 10 apiece. Is that on Nielsen that we went to the left excessively or on the coaches? That is 64% of our attacks from the left, seems way to predictable to me.

Correction to the story, KU closes out it's season on 11/30 at WVU.

Bville I went and looked at some of the play by play, and it looks like in the first set Nielsen did distribute to a lot of different players, and we won. But then in the second set, she started to really feature Smith. Hard to say why, maybe coach told her to. Maybe Texas was keying on certain players. Look how few hits Langs and Van Driel had, and even Ennis was ignored a lot.

69 attacks on left side, is crazy. I just think that even if we get a few blocked, distributing all over the place is our best change to keep other team honest and have the best chance to win.

It was a loss. A respectable loss, but a loss.
So we could close out 2-0, and that would help a lot for next year. Or we could 0-2 and that would be a real tough way to end up. What a disappointment this year has been. And as I said, it makes 3 disappointing years in a row.

How much is enough?
