Kansas State quarterback Skylar Thompson (10) runs into the end zone for a touchdown during the first quarter on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2019 at Memorial Stadium.

The head coaches for both teams were new. The crowd was a sellout at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium for the first time since 2009. But the result was much of the same.

Kansas State dominated in every aspect of the game on its way to a 38-10 victory over Kansas Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats have now won 11 consecutive games in the Sunflower Showdown, which matches their longest win streak in the history of this in-state rivalry.

Even with first-year head coach Chris Klieman at the helm, Kansas State’s path to another lopsided victory looked reminiscent of the days when Bill Snyder was manning the ship. K-State ran all over KU’s defense for much of the afternoon. The Wildcats also baffled the Jayhawks’ offense, which had averaged 42 points per game over the last two weeks.

Kansas State scored first on a 1-yard touchdown run by Skylar Thompson, setting the tone for a ground game that overwhelmed Kansas all day. Harry Trotter scored on a 9-yard touchdown on the first play of the second period. The Jayhawks trailed by doubled-digits for the remainder of the contest.

Thompson added two more touchdown runs in the second half to put the game away.

Kansas is now 3-6 on the year, including 1-5 in Big 12 play under head coach Les Miles. No. 22 Kansas State is now 6-2 under Klieman with a 3-2 clip against league foes.

Here’s a quick look back at some of the action:

• The game turned when: KU threw a back-breaking interception late in the first half.

All things considered, a 17-3 deficit wasn’t as bad as it could have been for the Jayhawks. But Kansas missed an opportunity to head into the intermission with some momentum after a stagnant start to the game.

Trailing 14-3, the Jayhawks got the ball on their own 38-yard line with 1:25 remaining in the first half. It appeared to be a good chance for KU to trim the deficit to one possession. Instead, Stanley threw an interception on the very first play.

Kansas State proceeded to hit a field goal seven players later, taking a 17-3 lead at halftime. The Wildcats then scored on the first drive of the second half to remove any doubt about the outcome.

•Up next: Kansas will have its second bye week of the 2019 season.

38-3? Looks like the story was mailed in early.

A 5 yd reception on 3rd and 6 sort of set the tone for the day.

I do appreciate Coach Miles going for it on 4th down even though missing starts to seal the deal.

That was a bitter taste of reality. If you thought our last two losses to K-State by a total of 14 points was a sign we are making up ground, guess again. Klieman is Snyder 2.0.

Very disappointing game to watch (from the Crimson and Blue viewpoint). After following the Texas game from my phone, and watching the TTU game, I had HIGH expectations from the Jayhawks offense. I don't know if the game expectations was to much for C. Stanley (or what).

Bryce Landon 1 year, 2 months ago

Well, so much for all the hype about the Jayhawks finally coming back from the dead after their fluky win over a bad Texas Tech team. Back to earth for all you Les Miles Kool-Aid drinking myopians.

Even when my Hawkeyes have a bye week, they win - simply by virtue of not being the Jayhawk football team.

Who were those guys on the field wearing the adidas grey middle school uniforms?

Dane Pratt 1 year, 2 months ago

The refs should have called for a personal foul before the snap on the first play of the game.

Stan Weber (KSU Radio announcers were on SiriusXM today) mentioned that Dominic Williams has decided to redshirt this season as well. I've not seen or heard one bit of that information from the LJW Sports staff. If so, where was that ever mentioned at?

If not, the LJW Sports staff is getting lazy (when I hear such information from Stan Weber).

I disagree with Bryce 99% of the time, but he is spot on here. I just cringed when most of you all were drinking the koolaid in MASS QUANTITIES. Let’s talk reality. KU is not ready for even middle tier of BIG XII. We didn’t turn a corner. Our defense is atrocious. However, we went from 50 points, to 34, then to 38. Maybe by 2021, we can hold a team to 21 points. Where are all of the Dearmon faithful as an offensive coordinator genuis? Don’t get me wrong, I’m a true blue KU fan, but I’m also a realist. We have a long way to go. Without toughness, and some very high 3 star and 4 star recruits, we can expect the same every year.

Stanley also missed on a few passes that he had, including a potential long bomb touchdown. It's just really unfortunate that KU had to lay an egg in front of the first sellout at the stadium in 10 years.

The defense is not terrible, but nowhere near good enough. I think they looked worse than they should have today because the offense couldn't stay on the field, it's pretty obvious they looked really gassed. I had the game on but pretty much missed most of the second half, didn't see KU's only score at the end of the game.

Bryce your a Iowa Fan why are you still bothered with the Jayhawks? I could of swore you were nonexistent on any of the articles from a week ago when the Jayhawks beat Texas Tech.

Austin Lopez 1 year, 2 months ago

I don’t think anyone is drinking any of the kool aid. The fact is people are excited about the football team, and they should be. How many people before the season had KU beating Boston College and Texas Tech? I’ll wait. Just imagine how good this team will be once the current staff gets there players in here.

Bryce, it’s complete flattery that you waste your time commenting on the Jayhawks when you’re clearly not a fan. Hope has kept many of us tuned into KU football when all common sense says otherwise. You call it Kool Aid, I call it a reason to support the football team past week 1. Don’t be a DB. Sell your negativity elsewhere.

Dane Pratt 1 year, 2 months ago

Don't be a DB? Too late on that, the train has left the station.

Really proud of the fans and the program. Just an amazing atmosphere in the stadium tonight.

We got it handed to us tonight. It happens.

Something tells me that this team will fight back and keep working. It’s a grind folks. Be proud for showing out today. Be proud of the progress the team has made. It’s going to keep getting better. But this doesn’t happen overnight. It comes in fits and starts, and then it gets going.

Dirk Medema 1 year, 2 months ago

Bryce just came back to show his true colors of a quitter. It really shouldn’t surprise anyone. It’s what he has been for years. To expect something else is like expecting it to not be freezing in the winter.

Jerry Walker 1 year, 2 months ago

Coach Miles talked about re-evaluating game preparation to prevent these early deficits...are you listening Coach Eliot?

Dane Pratt 1 year, 2 months ago

Not going to hang this one on the defense Jerry. Our offense gave them a short field that resulted in 10 points. Take that away and you're looking at 4 touchdowns. If you told me before the game started that our defense was going to spot them 28 points I would have guessed our offense could have covered that.
