KU baseball eliminated by Texas Tech in Big 12 Championship

By Staff Report     May 24, 2019

A trio of Red Raider home runs were just enough for Texas Tech to defeat the Kansas baseball team, 7-5, and end KU’s run during an elimination game in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship Friday afternoon at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

Kansas (32-26) got the scoring started early and pounced on Texas Tech (38-16) starter Bryce Bonnin, scoring two runs in the top of the first and two more in the top of the second to take a 4-0 lead.

A game-tying, two-out home run by junior Brett Vosik wasn’t enough for Kansas, as Texas Tech countered with a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh that broke the game open and gave them the lead for good.

The tying run came to the plate in the ninth inning, but ultimately could not deliver.

Kansas finished the regular season as one of the hottest teams in the nation, going 10-5 in league play to end the conference slate, and finished the year with a Big 12 record at .500 (12-12), good enough for fifth place.

“I couldn’t be more proud of them,” KU head coach Ritch Price said in a team release. “We played our first 24 games away from Hoglund Ballpark, that’s the most in the country. We played 41 games on the road or at neutral sites, which is the most of any Power 5 school in the country. The weather was awful. As we got the chance to practice outside and develop a normal routine, we got better as the season went on. That’s what every coach wants to see out of a young team.”
