The Big 12 Conference named Kansas redshirt-junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Cyr the league’s Pitcher of the Week and freshman outfielder Casey Burnham the league’s Newcomer of the Week Monday afternoon for their performances in the Jayhawks’ series sweep of Texas over the weekend.
Cyr earned the honor for his showing Saturday afternoon when he pitched a complete game shutout in the second game against the Longhorns. The righty needed just 86 pitches to wrap up his third-straight and league-leading fourth complete game of the season. He also allowed only two hits and struck out six batters.
Burnham was awarded Newcomer of the Week for his late-game heroics in the Jayhawks’ first game against the Longhorns. The freshman outfielder launched a walk-off, two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the game for Kansas. He also has posted a 5-for-10 clip with two walks in his last four games.
KU (26-21) will play a doubleheader against Jackson State at Hoglund Ballpark, which begins at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
