A few days removed from his involvement in a serious car accident, University of Kansas safety Nick Caudle is expected to make a full recovery.

Caudle, a second-year KU football player from Atchison, was driving his F150 south on U.S. Highway 59 on Friday, when he lost control of the vehicle and drove into the northbound lane, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol’s report on the crash.

Caudle’s F150 was then struck by a Kia Optima driven by Lee R. Crum, 81, of Oskaloosa, according to the report. The Optima went off the road into the ditch, and the F150 rolled onto its side, then tipped back upright.

Crum died at the scene.

On Monday, KU football coach Les Miles released a statement regarding Caudle and the accident.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in this accident.  Nick went to the hospital as a precautionary measure and was released,” Miles stated. “We expect him to be a full participant in spring football.”

Caudle, Dongchen Chen, a KU student who was a passenger in Caudle’s truck, and Janet E. Crum, who was a passenger in the Optima, all were taken to Stormont-Vail Hospital, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol’s report.

Listed at 6-feet and 191 pounds, Caudle redshirted in 2017, did not play in a game this past year and will be a redshirt sophomore for the upcoming season.
