Behind a strong start from freshman left-hander Hunter Freese, the Kansas baseball team defeated Texas Southern, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Melissa Sports Complex in the final game of a four-game set.

Freese (1-0), who made his second-career start for the Jayhawks (5-3), tossed five shutout innings before leaving the game in the sixth. He limited the Tigers (1-7) to four hits, while striking out one and walking four.

The lone run of the game came off the bat of designated hitter Kaimana Souza-Paaluhi, a redshirt sophomore, in the second inning, when he grounded out to second base. Junior shortstop Benjamin Sems scored on the play.

KU plays host to Northern Illinois at 3 p.m. Friday.
