By Staff Report     Feb 18, 2019

Backed by a strong showing by its bullpen to close the game, the Kansas baseball team defeated USC Upstate, 5-3, to split the four-game series at Cleveland Harley Baseball Park Monday afternoon in Valley Falls, South Carolina.

Sophomore lefty Daniel Hegarty, freshman Stone Parker, redshirt junior Blake Goldsberry and redshirt sophomore Jonah Ulane combined for 6 1/3 innings in relief, allowing a total of two runs off six hits.

Senior center fielder Rudy Karre led the offense with two RBI and a run scored. Junior second baseman James Cosentino recorded a solo home run, while junior catcher Jaxx Groshans, who was named Big 12 player of the week Monday afternoon, finished the day with a 1-for-1 effort that included a RBI and three walks.

With the cancelation of Wednesday’s contest against Omaha, Kansas will resume action against Texas Southern this weekend for a four-game series at Hoglund Ballpark.
