The Kansas football coaching staff won’t know for certain until Wednesday’s National Signing Day exactly who they will be adding to their 2019 class.

In the meantime, an in-state player they targeted as a preferred walk-on announced Sunday night his plan to join the Jayhawks.

Dylan Downing, a 6-foot-2 linebacker from nearby Bishop Miege, tweeted out his decision to commit to KU and its new head coach, Les Miles.

According to Jayhawk Slant, Downing had visited Iowa State just a few days before making a visit to Lawrence and meeting with Miles and other KU coaches.

During his senior year at Miege, Downing recorded 131 total tackles for the Class 4A state champions, and he received the Bobby Bell Award, as the top lineman/linebacker in small class football in the Kansas City metro area.

Downing’s father, Ken, played football at Missouri. And his brother, Dawson, who joined the Tigers as a walk-on before earning a scholarship, will be a redshirt junior with Missouri this coming season.

Fantastic! Welcome! I hope you have a huge impact during your time as a Jayhawk.

Someone should explain why this kid is a "preferred walk-on" and not a scholarship player. As a linebacker, he can play sideline to sideline, makes his reads correctly and gets back to cover the seam routes and flat zones in pass coverage. Rare instincts for a high schooler and even for most current KU linebackers. http://www.hudl.com/profile/5368954/Dylan-Downing

Likely holding on to scholarships for higher rated players who hopefully will sign in a few days. When we eventually have a full complement of scholarships to give, young men like Dylan Downing might get a scholarship out of the chute. He'll possibly get one anyhow if one remains available after signing day. Or comes available later.

I think the article in slant is where I read a purple comment from last year about Dylan having a 40 yd time in excess of 5.0, and likely the reason he hadn't received much in the way of offers.

Similar to his brother at mu, and many others here over the past 4 years, if he comes in and shows the ability to contribute, he will earn a scholarship.

I believe I read once that scholarships given to players on campus and paying their own way don't count against the annual signing class total. It's the same situation for his kicker teammate, Butcher, Gibson from a couple years ago, and others.

Too tall, too short, too fast or slow, too small....the thing his history stands out is 'he can play football' !

Benton - how many scholarships are still left to hand out?

Most likely the answer to that is exactly why we're going after PWO's like this guy. He probably will get a scholarship if one becomes available but until then we have to reserve the few remaining scholarships for the higher level players we hope to sign. Someday we'll have a full complement of scholarships and thus will have fewer PWO's.

Totally off-subject but I think this article and others like it need to be disseminated as widely as possible... It has to do with the NCAA apparently being harsher on athletes from African nations...

This guy has all the qualities of Joe Dineen. He will start before his career is over!

Kansas Kid... Get everyone U can get... Show these Kansas Kids some LOVE. U can't get the best KS Kids to KU, why would an out of state kid even consider KU...

Always great to get the KS kids. He'll be a blue collar player who'll scrap and eventually earn a schollie.
