Kansas State made enough plays down the stretch to hold off Kansas yet again.

With 2:46 left in the game, K-State quarterback Alex Delton scored on a 21-yard touchdown run to give the hosts the final advantage in the 21-17 victory. The win extended the Wildcats’ (4-6, 2-5 Big 12) dominance in the Sunflower Showdown, as they have won 10 consecutive meetings over the Jayhawks.

KU’s last win over K-State came on Nov. 1, 2008. Kansas is now 3-7 overall, including 1-6 in conference play under head coach David Beaty, who was told last weekend that he would not be retained at the end of the 2018 season.

The Jayhawks attempted a late surge on their final drive, but were ultimately unable to respond on the road.

Here’s a quick look back at some of the action:

• The game turned when: Kansas committed multiple mistakes on a single possession late in the fourth quarter.

Clinging to a 17-14 lead, KU got the ball on its own 18-yard line with 8:29 remaining in the game. A pair of long runs by Khalil Herbert and Pooka Williams were negated by holding penalties, while Mavin Saunders was called for an unsportsmanlike penalty for kicking the flag.

Delton delivered the decisive blow on the ensuing drive.

• Offensive highlight: KU responded with an impressive drive following its first deficit of the afternoon.

After Kansas State took a 7-3 lead in the third quarter, the Jayhawks responded with a nine-play drive that accumulated 75 yards. Quarterback Peyton Bender connected with receiver Jeremiah Booker for a 9-yard touchdown to give Kansas a 10-7 advantage with 7:43 left in the third quarter.

A few players earlier, Bender and Booker also linked up for a 9-yard connection on third down to keep the drive alive.

• Defensive highlight: The Jayhawks had creative blitz packages in opportune times against Kansas State, particularly in the first half.

Joe Dineen and Bryce Torneden each tallied sacks for Kansas, though plenty of players provided pressure in passing situations. In the second quarter, Dineen blitzed up the middle on third down to force Alex Delton to get rid of it. Delton was called for intentional grounding, which pushed the Wildcats out of field goal range on a promising drive.

None by Shane Jackson

K-State turned to more designed quarterback runs and quick passes in the second half to counter Kansas’ pressure. As a result, the Wildcats scored a pair of decisive touchdowns in the third quarter.

I've been so numb for so long with KU football that it almost seems like progress to feel gutpunched by this loss. Stunning display of poor decisions, dumb penalties, and turnovers to lose a game that we actually should have won.

David Kemp 6 months, 1 week ago

Yes our offensive line really cost us the game with all the penaltys

Dane Pratt 6 months, 1 week ago

Just when you think you're immune from the pain of losing.

David Kemp 6 months, 1 week ago

That last play summed up Benders pitiful career.

Caleb Loong 6 months, 1 week ago

It kinda felt like Beaty called this game with the sole aim of angering fans to the greatest extent possible.

David Kemp 6 months, 1 week ago

He confirms week in week out why he will not be back. Live and die with Bender. Couldn’t have lost it on a more comical play.

Andy Godwin 6 months, 1 week ago

"Delton delivered the decisive blow on the ensuing drive". I guess the refs can only call holding when it benefits KSU. Clearly holding on KSU's TD run, yet same officials who made back to back game defining holding calls on KU, kept their flags in their pockets. The way this game ended was so frustrating.

Duane S Boor 6 months, 1 week ago

I am so tired of undisciplined, poor position playing as well as game prep/management. I am really looking forward 15 days from now!

Doug Fogleman 6 months, 1 week ago

Why in the world did he not run a play in the last moments of the first half? Snap the ball with 3 seconds left and it is a free play.

First game that I've been this frustated with in a long time.

Al Martin 6 months, 1 week ago

I've been so inured to incompetence and defeat that it takes quite a bit to animate me. But, yeah, I was yelling at the TV at the end of the half. There's much to gain and little to lose by running a play there.

Perhaps Beaty just couldn't get a play in fast enough. I mean, that's a defining trait of his coaching.

David Kemp 6 months, 1 week ago

Him and Bender could become the new commentators of espn bottom 10 since they could make the list every week

David Kemp 6 months, 1 week ago

Mr long pleeeeease help us. Texas game will take place to a high school crowd. Beaty will go out to the sound of crickets

Steven Haag 6 months, 1 week ago

PLEASE quit whining. Yes, Beaty made some questionable calls, he’s done that for 4 years and he is on his way out. The offensive line lost that game for us on that one series. We had them on their backs and had 4 penalties in a row. That’s not on the coach. And I agree with Andy, the officiating was definitely biased. Now, if we take care of business, we wouldn’t have to talk about a few bad calls. How many balls were dropped by KU receivers today? At least one was a touchdown throw. You can’t blame the cold on the receivers hands and then blast Bender in the same sentence. Bender losing the ball just sums up the whole 4 year heartache that we have endured. To more games people, two more games.

Doug Cramer 6 months, 1 week ago

B.S. it not on the coach ???

Obviously you know nothing about competitive sports, because Beaty has failed to teach the players in this program how to play with discipline and do the little things right.

100% on the Coach.

FYI, I like Coach Beaty as a person, but this job was way over his head.

Gerry Butler 6 months, 1 week ago

Thank you Steven - -although he WON'T stop whining. - Couldn't agree more the refs calling back to back holding calls after we ripped off 2 HUGE runs - -Hell even their owns fans were commenting on it. - -Like this said by KSU fans: Thank GOD the ref's are protecting us -Another one said Looks like the ref's are going to try their hardest to keep us in this. - - even their own people was talking about these boo Shi- -- Calls

Armen Kurdian 6 months, 1 week ago

It has been a very long time since I yelled at the TV in KU football game. How many possible ways did we have to win this game that we just screwed up? It's just beyond the expression of words at this point the utter joke that this program has become. Those holding calls, dropped passes, other missed assignments, that's just poor coaching, these players are better than this.

David Kemp 6 months, 1 week ago

For most part defense played well enough for us to win. Offense gave us little help

David Kemp 6 months, 1 week ago

When I say offense I exclude sims, pools and Herbert who gave it their best shot.

Aaron Paisley 6 months, 1 week ago

Those two holding calls were total BS. Neither was a hold that should've been called. KU at worst should've been up 6, possibly 10, and KSU shouldn't have gotten the ball back until there was less than 3 minutes left.

Receivers had some drops including another would be TD.

Joe Ross 6 months, 1 week ago

A lot of "coulda, shoulda, woulda", but at the start of the season some were predicting 5 wins were possible. Add Nicholls State (which we would have won with Pooka) and today's result, and the 5 wins was within the scope of accomplishment. Beaty's job had a reasonable chance of being saved.

As a Kansas fan with an eye to the future who wants the best for the program, I'd have taken the outcome of the season knowing that Beaty's being let go gives us a good shot at Les Miles. A lot of silver packs the lining of the dark cloud right now, especially with a respectable AD in place.

What's more, Les will have something to work with if he comes on board. I expect a fully respectable program in 3 years. Year 1: employing the system and late recruiting. Year 2: better recruiting, positive results on the field, stadium fundraising makes strides. Year 3: the beginning of regular bowl eligibility, recruiting in full swing, stadium construction begins.

Whether or not conference realignment rears its head in the meantime will remain to be seen; however, there is now a pathway to view Kansas's finally crawling out of this hole and step into the light of day with its football program.

David Kemp 6 months, 1 week ago

You are right. This season easily could have been 5 or 6 wins but when you are a bad team none of those breaks will ever go your way, you gotta make em

Brett McCabe 6 months, 1 week ago

KSU down, TCU down, KU still finishes last.

Dane Pratt 6 months, 1 week ago

Les Miles is not at the top of my list but our roster is at 112 with 25 seniors. Whoever they hire needs to hit the recruiting trail. If Miles can get some recruits I'm all for him as our next coach.

David Kemp 6 months, 1 week ago

Miles is one of the few who can hit the recruiting trail before january

Doug Cramer 6 months, 1 week ago

All you so called KU fans that wanted Mangino gone, this is what you deserve.

Beaty learned nothing from Mangino about how to instill discipline within a college football program.

Our other two coaches didn’t understand the importance of discipline either.

We will never have a coach in our lifetime that will instill the kind of discipline Mangino did that allows a school like us to be successful.

Send us to the Mountain West where we deserve.

Thanks Lou

I'm not a so-called KU fan. I'm an actual fan. How long do you plan to live in the past? FYI - we have driverless cars in 2018. The future is a fun place to be.

Doug Cramer 6 months, 1 week ago

I get it Brett - but I don’t think people have learned from the past.

We have the most successful coach in the history of our program just waiting in the wings to come back, and we still have folks that treat him like the media treats Donald Trump.

Doug Cramer 6 months, 1 week ago

By the way - we got 1 recruit coming in next year.

If Les is smart, he wouldn’t touch this job with a 10 ft pole.

Even if he does, it won’t matter.

David Kemp 6 months, 1 week ago

Hire miles now and he can start the recruiting ASAP. Everybody else will be in a bowl and the recruiting will be over and we will be left with a cupboard worse than what Beaty has.

Doug Cramer 6 months, 1 week ago

David it’s too late.

We have a ton of seniors leaving and 1 freshman coming in.

You could hire Nick Sabin and it wouldn’t matter.

David Kemp 6 months, 1 week ago

We still need to fill the class somehow with quality kids or the spiral continues. But I agree and anybody who said Beaty was leaving this better than what he got is not true

Joe Ross 6 months, 1 week ago

Doug. Don't discount the "impossible".

Remember: Prior to the season many would have thought that Miles even thinking about coaching Kansas would have been a pipe dream. Yet here we are with mutual interest.

You gotta see the positive sometime bro.

Dane Pratt 6 months, 1 week ago

I'm with you Joe. Can't wait for our new head coach.

Chuck Baldwin 6 months, 1 week ago

Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory is what KU Football is. Beaty kicking a field goal instead going on 4th and 1 was completely inept. ANOTHER week with a dropped TD pass. Bender’s fumble reminds me of a certain Tamp Bay Buccaneers Kicker... google it all you millennials. Also reminds me of when we lost from fumbling an intentional grinding to stop the clock. We find new ways to lose and make the blooper highlights. David Beaty should never coach another game here. It’s too painful.

Steven Haag 6 months, 1 week ago

Doug, I know quite a bit about competing football. KU has had far less penalties this year. They had few penalties all game, until that series. Your hatred for Beaty...no, your hatred for KU is obvious. So, are you going to give Beaty praise for the disciple of not holding for the other 3 quarters? Nope, you find one thing and then throw the whole pile on it. Pathetic. Screaming about how the new coach (even if it was Saban) is doomed. Way to set the stage for your whining next year. Maybe you can break ranks and start rooting for the Iowa Hawkeyes😂😂😂😂😂😂

Timothy Grillot 6 months, 1 week ago

I am not sure it would have worked but why not fire Beaty and make him walk. Hire in MIles to finish the season? I understand college football is complicated but probably would have won this game. A 4-8 finish would not be bad going into next year. Now KSU has the advantage going forward on in-state recruits. Beaty's downfall is for not doing what he said he was going to do with recruiting and never having had experience as a head coach he was terrible with in-game coaching and adjustments. The old man outcoached Beaty switching up plays because of the pressure on defense. We did not make adjustments. Beaty said he would recruit Kansas recruits harder (he did not) and with his Texas recruiting experience he would reopen the Texas pipeline. He did not. The debacle we call football at KU falls squarely at Perkins feet. He ran off Mangino because he wanted to hire his own guy. He had a commitment from a serious upgrade but when he would not let him do his former team's bowl game he bolted. Then he gives the same contract to untried and untested Gill. Zenger's hire of Weiss was next. How can you expect a guy who couldn't recruit at Notre Dame to recruit at Kansas? Then hiring a person with total nonexperience. The formula to success at KU in football has been to be able to recruit in Texas, pulling in good recruits who fly under the radar and doing some recruiting within Kansas. The tackle who held for KSU on the winning TD is a Lawrence Free State grad. Our offensive line has been suspect all year long. Alex Barnes is a damn good running back from Pittsburg. The other thing about hiring Miles on an interim basis we have a better chance to keep some of the quality players we do have like Pooka Williams.

David Kemp 6 months, 1 week ago

It’s not as much that we lost but to lose on a blooper play when Bender loses the ball on a play which by the way would have gone a long way sums up Beaty ball at ku

Steve Corder 6 months, 1 week ago

Kind of like, “snap your fingers” and a coach will appear?

Doug Stahler 6 months, 1 week ago

The kid that tried to hide the flag can go packing with Beaty. Last year the worst team in college doesn't shake Mayfield's hand? This year the 2nd worst team in college hides penalty flags?

Jack Hoff 6 months, 1 week ago

Very tough loss to stomach. The game was there to be had. Still think the biggest factor was the back to back holding calls. Seems a bit odd considering the holds that KSTATE got away with on their last TD drive. A score there and the game is over. Even being biased I feel like those were bad calls. Dropped TD pass was also the also play that really cost them in the end. Ridiculous to me to say a rushed 57 yard field goal in the freezing cold cost them the game. What happens when kstate blocks it and takes it back? This was not squarely on Beaty. I mean at some point players have to execute. He can't catch wide open passes and he can't hold the ball in Bender's hand. Bender played great all game. At some point players have to make those plays. The coaches didn't do anything that put them at a disadvantage, they just didn't execute. And when they did execute they get punished by the officials.

Dane Pratt 6 months, 1 week ago

Some people want to blame Beaty for everything. I heard he gave away apples on Halloween. Can you believe that?

6 months, 1 week ago

what do you think of DB's execution? "Im all for it!" great, fitting line here
