Both of the Kansas men’s and women’s track and field teams placed 17th at the NCAA Indoor Championships this weekend and KU junior Hussain Al Hizam won a national title in the men’s pole vault Friday at Gilliam Indoor Stadium in College Station, Texas.
Al Hizam, from Jubail, Saudi Arabia, cleared the bar at 18 feet, 8.25 inches, setting a school record and earning KU’s first national title in the event since Terry Porter in 1973.
"For him to be able to not only win the title, but to get the facility record just shows how good he was,” KU track and field coach Stanley Redwine said.
Kansas redshirt junior Sharon Lokedi placed third in the women’s 5,000 meters Friday with a time of 15:52.95, the second-fastest time in school history behind her own record that she set earlier this year. She was sixth in the 3,000 meters Saturday.
KU senior Laura Taylor added a sixth-place finish in the women’s pole vault, clearing 14 feet, 3.5 inches.
