Women’s basketball: Kansas State ends Kansas’ season, 72-63, in Big 12 tournament

The Kansas women’s basketball season ended Friday night in Oklahoma City with a 72-63 loss to Kansas State in the first round of the Big 12 tournament.

K-State outscored KU 11-2 at the end of the game to score its third victory of the season and second in six days against its in-state rival.

Redshirt sophomore post player Tyler Johnson (career-high 18 points) and junior point guard Christalah Lyons (16 points, 4 of 6 3-point shooting) gave strong performances in the loss.

It capped a strong finish to the season for Johnson, who scored a career-high 15 points in Manhattan last Saturday and matched it Tuesday in a loss at Iowa State.

Lyons, who earned All-Big 12 Honorable Mention, gave KU (12-18) a 56-48 lead with 8:16 left on a 3-pointer. K-State (16-14) took control from there, scoring 24 points to KU’s seven the rest of the way.

Kaylee Page (20 points) and Kayla Goth (19 points) led Kansas State (16-14), which advanced to a quarterfinal game against No. 1 seed Baylor.

Lots of progress this season. Take a break for a little bit and realize the motivation to still be playing. Let it fuel your off-season work to come back stronger next season. Rock Chalk.

7-81 in Big 12 play for Zenger hires (Beaty & Schneider). There is not a child alive who could do worse.
