A two-time All-American golfer at Kansas, Lawrence resident Chris Thompson entered Friday’s second round of the United Leasing and Finance Championship in Newburgh, Indiana, in 23rd place, eight strokes behind leader Maverick McNealy.

Thompson finished the day tied for second with Ethan Tracy, one stroke behind McNealy.

Thompson made his away around Victoria National, considered one of the most difficult courses on the Web.com Tour, in 66 strokes, 6-under par, after shooting even par Thursday.

Nelson Ledesma was the only other player in the field to go as low as 66 Friday.

Thompson, 41, carded eight birdies and made bogey on two holes.

McNealy and Thompson tee off last in the third round at 12:25. McNealy, 22, played his college golf at Stanford, where his brothers Dakota and Colt now play. Their youngest brother, Scout, committed to play at Baylor. All four brothers were named after American cars, a nod to their grandfather, who worked in the auto industry in Detroit.

Thompson, who already was on KU’s golf team when Maverick McNealy was born, entered the week ranked 47th on the tour’s money list with $31,162 and 28th in average driving distance (301.5 yards).

Teamed in the Zurich Classic, Gary Woodland and Daniel Berger missed the cut by two strokes.
