KU football will have open practice instead of traditional spring game

Kansas safety Mike Lee signs autographs following the 2017 Spring Game on Saturday, April 15 at Memorial Stadium.

Don’t show up at the newly christened David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium on April 28 expecting to see a football game.

KU football still plans on rolling out all its typical fan-focused spring game activities on the last Saturday of the month, but what happens on the turf that afternoon will only qualify as a practice.

The closest fans will get to seeing head-to-head play in what is being dubbed the program’s “spring football showcase” will come during certain team periods of the open practice, which is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.

According to a KU spokesperson, injuries at certain positions, such as the offensive line, have left the Jayhawks shorthanded this spring. The coaching staff reportedly deemed the roster too depleted to go through with a full-blown scrimmage, opting instead for a practice, as a precautionary measure.

In 2017, KU had a traditional spring game, complete with a player draft in the days leading up to the event. In 2016, the program played a scrimmage without using a traditional scoring format. In 2015, head coach David Beaty's first in charge, the Jayhawks played a typical spring game, though it was marred by a knee injury to quarterback Michael Cummings.

This year's featured spring practice will be viewable via broadcast on the Jayhawk Television Network, in the state of Kansas and the Kansas City metro area, and nationally on ESPN3. Audio coverage will be available via the Jayhawk Radio Network.

Prior to the team’s final spring practice, KU football will have its annual alumni flag football game, scheduled to begin at noon.

Stadium gates will open at 11 a.m. Seating will be limited to the west side of the venue, and fans will be allowed to enter the stadium at gates 1, 3, 4, 8, 32 and 33, as well as at the west ramps and suite elevators. A clear bag policy will be in effect for all spectators.

Below is a rundown of other “spring football showcase” activities.

• A Bike Rodeo will feature a course and free bike inspections, courtesy of Douglas County Fire and Medical. Children aged 15 and younger will be custom-fitted with a free bicycle helmet (while supplies last) as they learn about rules of the road, trail etiquette and safety. It begins at 10 a.m., in lots 92 and 94, east of the stadium.

• More family-friendly activities, such as photo opportunities, poster-making, stickers and face tattoos, will be available before the game in the Hawk Zone, which will open at 11 a.m., on KU’s practice fields, located adjacent the stadium on the southeast side.

• The Train Like A Jayhawk clinic, featuring instructional stations led by KU players will begin after the practice, on the stadium turf. It is for kids in grades 1-6. Participating children will receive a Train Like A Jayhawk T-shirt. Check-in for the clinic will begin at 11 a.m., at the Hawk Zone until practice begins; then check-in will take place in the south concourse area of the stadium. Online registration for the clinic, as well as more information on the various activities surrounding the 2018 “spring football showcase” can be found at

In before the world is ending and people get mad at David Beaty for people having injuries.

They are going to have a lot of fun to watch drills taking place, but of course, you won't post that because you have an agenda.

I'll be there tailgating with the crew, can't wait to see what you anti-Beaty/Zenger fans come up with.

Kevin Robert Fest 2 years, 6 months ago

God Bryson don't you get tired of yourself? What agenda does he have?. You are so ridiculous smh. Come up with some new material every article you claim they have an agenda. Why don't you just write the fing articles then? Fking baby you are.

This will be a theme for the season, injuries are hurting us before the season even starts.

Kevin Robert Fest 2 years, 6 months ago

What is your agenda Bryson? To kiss Beaty's a** until it falls off?

Bryson Stricker 2 years, 6 months ago

stop commenting on my threads if you aren't going to have football savvy conversations please and thank you.

Chris DeWeese 2 years, 6 months ago

Has this ever happened before? Has KU not actually played a spring game?

Bryson Stricker 2 years, 6 months ago

Hey Chris, you seem rationale for the time being so I am going to respond to you.

Many schools have started to drift away from an actual spring game. I say MANY and I mean MANY. The same school that I believe you commented on Ryan Willis' performance, didn't actually have a spring game, they had game like scenarios.

We aren't just having a practice, there is going to be a lot of showcase type stuff that is going to show the players to the fans (that attend).

Son Mac 2 years, 6 months ago

The naysayers won't be at the games supporting the team anyways. It gets old reading this stuff. Beaty is the head coach, this is the team I've chosen to support, no changes are going to be made, so let it go. If you don't want to support these kids then stay home.

Gerry Butler 2 years, 6 months ago

I've tried tell these guys the same thing - nobody forcing you to come or watch on TV - no one has a gun to their heads making them watch. - But you see these people would just much rather bitch makes them feel intelligent lol - -instead of how they like to bring up the fresh 3-33 BS - hell they would bitch if it was reversed 33-3 they would still find something to Whine about - I hear what your saying Mac for sure

John Joseph Gorski 2 years, 6 months ago

I think Gill or Weis did a walk through game once. I remember that "game" the QB's didn't even throw passes, just made the motion to throw.

John Fitzgerald 2 years, 6 months ago

I'm not surprised by this one bit. But I'm going to try my best not to 'question' or 'judge' Beaty until after the 2018 season.

Brett McCabe 2 years, 6 months ago

1-26. And you need another year to question Beaty?

Anyone who thinks transitioning this from a spring game to a practice is due to injuries, probably also believes that McGwire and Bonds were PED-free. This isn't about injuries, it's about not having a fan count in the stadium for a spring game. It's about lowering expectations and avoiding embarrassment. The embarrassment of a 1-26 record.

If I were David Booth, I'd have them wait a few years before officially changing the stadium name.

John Fitzgerald 2 years, 6 months ago

Relax. Beaty is here. Nothing you or I can do to change that. I would even bet you if he goes 0-12 in 2018 he’ll be back in 2019.

Gerry Butler 2 years, 6 months ago

Ya your Right Brett - that's what it is - -my GOD why would they come up with such a thing - -they can't slide that by you -you too quick - thanks for enlightening everyone - -that's exactly what it is

Barry Weiss 2 years, 6 months ago

well, this is unfortunate that we are already depleted to the point we can't even field two teams for a scrimmage. This could be a long year.

John Joseph Gorski 2 years, 6 months ago

I'm thinking it's more of Beaty didn't want to have loss this early in the season!

Andy Craig 2 years, 6 months ago

So some of the players will never have a game type play/situations until an actual game this fall....

Dirk Medema 2 years, 6 months ago

"Already depleted" because injuries won't heal and more players won't arrive in the summer?

Bryson - Do you have any info on the status of the injured? Adeniji was the one I was most concerned with but thought I read that he was healing/healed?

If Tovi and Gilbertson are the only OCs until summer then that could be real limiting and possibly put them in a bad place if they struggle.

Bryson Stricker 2 years, 6 months ago

There are a few knacks and bruises on the line that are preventing a few people from going 100%. Not going to reveal names at this time because I enjoy being in DB's good graces unlike the staff here at LJW.

Tovi, Gilbertson are the only people training at center right now. That's not a bad thing. Tovi will be our starting center, he has gotten very good at it.

We have two people with center experience coming in this summer. As well as four additional linemen on top of that.

We are very fine in terms of our offensive line numbers right now, just a few people who aren't on campus yet. (Keep in mind, our roster should only deplete from Fall to Spring, it is just now a more common thing for some kids to come here early).

For all of you that were pumping about HS kids, if we had gone purely HS, we would be at far less kids on campus, but that doesn't fit your narrative about b****ing about Beaty now does it.

Brett McCabe 2 years, 6 months ago

1-26 doesn't earn anything for anybody anywhere except under "save my job Zenger".

Beaty screwed up the roster-build, chased off quality players, turnstiled his coaching staff (yeah, I know it's not a word), promised a bowl game and then gutted the program on his way out the door with a JUCO recruiting class that the next guy will have to clean-up after.

Tailgate that.

Kevin Robert Fest 2 years, 6 months ago

What a surprise Bryson doesn't want to upset Daddy by posting too much information. Hopefully when Daddy gets fired you'll go with him.

Kevin Robert Fest 2 years, 6 months ago

Not going to reveal names at this time because I enjoy being in DB's good graces ~Bryson Stricker.

Well it's is now apparent why Bryson post such idiotic rants about the team. The designated lead "fan boy" sucks A** for privilege. What a phoney you are what are you going to do when Daddy gets fired and the new coach wants nothing to do with you? How sad that a grown man has to resort to these types of things for a team. You no longer have any credibility here not that you ever had any. How worthless.

Gerry Butler 2 years, 6 months ago

No what's sad is your pathetic response - actually past sad - you talk about Bryson - -and you think you have to trump his comments with your gems - -your the sad item here - can't call you a man - and speaking of suckin A - - how's business ya dum A -s-s

Mark Bowers 2 years, 6 months ago

I get more excited about Bryson bragging about being a hanger on, than I do about the actual team! These back and forths (not a word) are what's going to get me through another awesome season of Jayhawk Football!!! #Earnitbryson

Ryan Ferree 2 years, 6 months ago

Might as well cancel the season as well, this dumpster fire gets more pathetic by the day..

[''] 2 years, 6 months ago

"Seating will be limited" if more than 300 were coming anyway. We only have 1 center and 4 DTs on the roster so we could not possibly play a spring game. This is in Year 4 ladies & gents...

Barry Weiss 2 years, 6 months ago

exactly! should have said "fans in attendance is projected to be limited".. Hey, the alumni flag game at noon will out draw this snoozer! ha!

Joe Norgay 2 years, 6 months ago

This is beyond embarassing. It’s getting to the point that Zenger and now Girod are practically guilty of dereliction of duty. They are making a mockery out of our school with their inability and incompetence in running a P5 athletic program.

I cannot believe that the ‘stakeholders’ are ok to sit idly by (because of basketball) while the university loses MILLIONS due to the above. Those two have a fiduciary responsibility to put a decent product on the field and they completely and entirely fail at doing that.

What an absolute joke.

[''] 2 years, 6 months ago

Other P5 schools make the spring game a major priority:

Somehow Kentucky (a basketball school) can draw 36,000 fans to their spring game.

Chris DeWeese 2 years, 6 months ago

I was thinking the same thing. It's embarrassing that our football program can't provide a spring game when so many other traditionally non-football schools don't seem to have a problem with it. It can't be just bad luck.

Bryson Stricker 2 years, 6 months ago

All the schools who cancelled there's must have really made it a major priority

Dillon Davis 2 years, 6 months ago

And they cancelled because of weather...not because they wanted to avoid embarrassment.

Kevin Robert Fest 2 years, 6 months ago

I'll bet the offensive players are relieved that they don't have to get knocked out by Mike Lee this year.

2 years, 6 months ago

^^ there Is ? there was? try THEIRS. #kuedu

2 years, 6 months ago

also: the other schools that cancelled their spring games did so due to weather. not, not due to injuries or incompetence! this season will be Grrreeaaaat!! #rcjh

Doug Roberts 2 years, 6 months ago

Just shut it down. Shut it down for 5 years. What's the over/under on wins this year? One? Two?

Dumpster fires are embarrassed by this program.

Kevin Robert Fest 2 years, 6 months ago

What happens when the season starts and TT TCU OSU etc don't want to "practice" because we have too many injuries?

John Fitzgerald 2 years, 6 months ago

If I was a new comer to this site I wouldn’t be able to tell that everyone on here are KU fans. So much hate and disrespect towards each other.

John Brazelton 2 years, 6 months ago

Several high school and JUCO linemen can't show up until 1 June. Several of our past season linemen are recovering from off-season surgeries.

Brad Avery 2 years, 6 months ago

I wonder if it occurred to our fantastic three-win football staff that players can get hurt in drills too? Let them at least play flag football. We perhaps we can see if there is quarterback somewhere in our midst.

Jeff Coffman 2 years, 6 months ago

I'd like to know how many wins does it take for Beaty to keep his job. I personally believe if he doesn't win the first three he shouldn't be employed at KU anymore. Even with issues, you should win all Non big xii games.

I wish Bryson or John would give their expected win total. Beaty said year three was critical and he pinned year 3 at six wins. Please step up with a win total.

Jonathan Allison 2 years, 6 months ago

I think that this is a fair question.

How many wins does it take to save Beaty's job? Does this team have enough talent to do it?

If I were setting the bar, I'd say that Beaty needs a 6 win miracle season to keep his job. However, I'm not in charge, and I think that 5 wins likely would keep him employed. But 4 wins, even if most of the losses are close games probably isn't going to be enough to convince the current leadership that the program is on a path to success.

John Fitzgerald 2 years, 6 months ago

Bryson also had a good point that a lot of our guys won't be on campus yet, which could be a big reason Beaty is being cautious with the depleted roster. One guy I can't wait to get here though is Miles Emery. He may just be a freshmen but the dude is a beast. I wrote a little piece on him. But hoping he gets some action right away as we definitely have some openings at the DE position.

Jonathan Allison 2 years, 6 months ago

I personally have no problem with Beaty and Co doing away with the spring game. They should do what they want to do and what they think will be most beneficial for their program.

Contrary to what some of these comments seem to imply, the spring game doesn't really ever accomplish much for the football team anyway, except to give fans a little football fix, and give writers something to write about for a few weeks.

The coaches most likely make all of their personnel decisions based on regular practices anyway. And so much about the team really isn't ever decided until the end of the August training camp anyway.

I like the idea of having the "showcase" activities. It's a little outside the box, but it could be really interactive and fun for the fans in attendance. Especially the kids.
