Kansas head coach Bill Self talks with media members following the NCAA selection show on Sunday, March 12, 2017 at Allen Fieldhouse. The Jayhawks received a number one seed in the Midwest Regional and will play the winner of the NC Central and UC Davis First Four game in Tulsa.

A member of the board of directors since 2007, Kansas basketball coach Bill Self is set to begin his two-year stint as president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, the NABC announced Tuesday.

Self replaces outgoing president Jeff Jones, who is the head basketball coach at Old Dominion, who calls Self a “perfect fit” for the position.

“Bill has been successful at every stop in his career,” Jones said in a news release. “He fully understands the issues that are important to the NABC membership.”

Self was officially installed in his new role and presided over his first board meeting at the NABC convention earlier this month.

Self, who this fall will begin his 15th season in charge of the KU program, has been heavily involved with the NABC throughout his career and said in the release he was “proud” of his past involvement and this new opportunity to serve the organization in a different manner.

“I look forward to working with NABC Executive Director Jim Haney, his staff and the board to be a voice for all coaches that the NABC represents,” Self added.

Self is far from the only NABC member excited about his next venture.

“Bill Self has long been one of the most influential voices in college basketball, and is greatly respected among his coaching and administrative peers,” said Haney. “He will bring excellent leadership to the NABC Board of Directors as we continue our work to serve coaches and grow the game.”

Located in Kansas City, Mo., the NABC was founded in 1927 by legendary KU coach Forrest “Phog” Allen, who organized coaches into this collective group to serve as Guardians of the Game.

According to the organization’s mission, the NABC currently has nearly 5,000 members consisting primarily of university and college men’s basketball coaches. All members of the NABC are expected to uphold the core values (advocacy, leadership, service and education) of being a Guardian of the Game by bringing attention to the positive aspects of the sport of basketball and the role coaches play in the academic and athletic lives of today’s student-athletes.
