Sophomore pitcher Alexis Reid tossed her ninth complete game of the season, and Kansas’ softball team defeated Iowa, 6-2, on Sunday at Arrocha Ballpark for its second victory of the day in the Jayhawk Invitational.

Earlier, the Jayhawks defeated Wisconsin-Green Bay, 14-2, with Sarah Miller earning the victory.

“Alexis has gotten a lot of great experience, and she’s using it to get better,” KU coach Megan Smith said. “She’s never satisfied. She came out on Friday, won the game and threw well, but she wanted to do better and she did that today against a good team in Iowa.”

Junior Erin McGinley hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to give KU the lead.

“We set the tone well early and I was the most proud of how we answered back both times that Iowa scored,” Smith said. “It was huge for us to keep our composure, to get back in the dugout and find a way to get the run back.

“Tonight’s game our offense was really balanced,” Smith said. “We had our short game, we were doing some situational hitting, we got some sac flies and home runs, and that’s going to be a big part of our success. It’s not going to be just hitting home runs, but we are going to have to work together as a team. That has been our goal all week is to get them working as a team, and tonight was a great example of a team win in all aspects.”

Madison Sykes, Harli Ridling and Taylor Dodson homered for the Jayhawks in their victory over Wisconsin-Green Bay.

? Kansas University’s softball team swept a pair of games Saturday. The Jayhawks defeated Eastern Illinois, 3-2, and Butler, 5-3.

A two-run home run by Chaley Brickey in the seventh inning sent KU past Butler.

“That was big,” KU coach Megan Smith said. “We want the bat in her hands with runners on as much as we can get. She had a lot of opportunities in that game, and that’s saying a lot of the top of our order, getting on for her. It was a tough game and a really close game, so that was big for her to do that.”

In KU’s victory over Eastern Illinois, senior Monique Wesley pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and raising her record to 2-0.

“Monique did well today,” Smith said. “She didn’t have her best stuff, but she gutted it out and did really well. She was moving her pitches well enough to get good outs for us, and our defense did really well behind her. Aside from that one hit in the first inning, I thought she did a great job.”

Brickey hit three doubles for the Jayhawks.
