For the second week in a row and the fourth time this season, Kansas freshman Josh Jackson played his way to Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors, the conference announced Monday morning.
As the No. 2-ranked Jayhawks maintained their winning streak, with a victory at Oklahoma and a home win over Oklahoma State, Jackson averaged 18.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals.
Jackson shared the newcomer award this week, with Texas freshman big Jarrett Allen, who averaged 18.5 points and 8.0 rebounds, to go with 2.0 blocks.
The standout freshman from Detroit put up his fourth double-double of the season versus OSU, with 20 points and 11 boards, adding two blocks and four steals, as well, in KU’s 16th consecutive win.
Jackson was named Big 12 Player of the Week in late December, too, giving him five conference honors on the season.
Jackson’s four Big 12 newcomer awards ties him among former KU players with Tyshawn Taylor (2010-11).
The star 6-foot-8 wing, who is projected to be a top pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, joins past Jayhawks Ben McLemore (2012-13) and Mario Chalmers (2005-06) as winners of both the league’s player and newcomer awards in the same season.
