Kansas rowers Kaelyn Thierolf and Olivia Loney won the open pair, double and singles race Sunday in the Jayhawk Jamboree with a time of 15:53.31.

Freshmen Reese Arnold, Mary Margaret Rodgers, Amelia Moore and Kate Mizell made their collegiate debuts with a first-place finish in the novice four race. Sophomore coxswain Katie McWhirter helped lead the group to a time of 15:38.21. Finishing right behind in a time of 16:15.6 in the novice four race were freshmen coxswain Riley Varuska, Kaitlyn Finger, Madison Ruffalo, Hailey Borden and Baylee Page.

“It’s a great day to be a Jayhawk,” KU coach Rob Catloth said. “This year we had approximately 40 more boats in the race than we did last year. There were a lot of tight races in a field that included three Big 12 teams and a Big Ten team. The level of racing here is pretty high and we are proud of how things went today.”

KU’s first varsity eight, led by senior coxswain Kenzie Obrochta, finished third in the 2,000-meter race and second-place in the 300-meter sprint. KU’s boat features junior Angie Allen, junior BriAnna Dittberner, junior Thierolf, junior Loney, senior Jordan Helms, junior Margret Winter, sophomore Peyton Anderson and sophomore Meghan Karoly.

“Our first varsity eight has a lot of returners, teammates who have worked hard over the summer and through the fall season,” Thierolf said. “We are a lot stronger physically than we were last year and we are looking forward to showing what we can do towards the end of the season.”

The Jayhawks will conclude their fall season Nov. 5-4 in the Tulsa Fall Invitational.
