KU freshman golfer tied for seventh

— Playing as an individual, Kansas freshman Yi-Tsen Chou finished the first round of the Cardinal Cup tied for seventh overall after she shot a career-best 75 on Sunday.

“Yi-Tsen played very steady (Sunday) and was able to capitalize on birdie opportunities,” KU women’s golf coach Erin O’Neil said. “She has been working hard on her game and it’s great to see that effort paying off.”

The Jayhawks finished the round 33 strokes over par with a 321 and stand in a tie for 13th with Bradley.

KU’s Ariadna Fonseca Diaz shot a 7-over 79 and is tied for 39th. Annika Cedo finished with an 80 and is tied for 44th. Victoria Chandra and Kallie Gonzales are tied with each other in 62nd place after they both shot an 81. Pitsinee Winyarat carded a 12-over 84.

“We had a tough start and did not come back from it like we are capable of doing,” O’Neil said. “We have to learn how to grind it out when things are not going our way.”

The tournament continues today and concludes Tuesday.

“(Monday) is a new day and we need to do a better job of taking care of the little things in our control,” O’Neil said. “It is very much in our abilities to shoot the numbers needed to move up the leaderboard the next two rounds.”

Florida State was leading the tournament after the first round with a 13-over 301.
