Collin Sexton chooses Alabama over KU

Despite a visit to Late Night in the Phog last month, highly coveted Class of 2017 guard Collin Sexton announced Thursday that he was headed to Alabama.

Sexton, the No. 7-ranked prospect by Rivals, made his announcement on ESPNU. Sexton picked Alabama over Kansas, Oklahoma State, North Carolina State, Georgia and Georgia Tech.

"Next year I will be going to Alabama," said Sexton, who flashed a basketball with the Alabama logo. "I felt like coach Avery Johnson, he was just a great coach. Everybody down there had very great energy. Communication was great. And they were on me for a long, long time."

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Sexton, one of the top scorers in his class, is expected to sign in the early period, which started Wednesday and ends next Wednesday.

Marcus Garrett, a 6-5 combo guard from Dallas, signed with the Jayhawks on Wednesday.

Another miss. This is getting annoying.

Brett McCabe 3 years, 6 months ago

Pretty much what everyone had predicted based on his comments previously.

Next man up.

Danny Hernandez 3 years, 6 months ago

He wanted to play point but there wasn't a spot for him especially if Graham returns

Avery Johnson is going to do well at Alabama I think.

Dale Rogers 3 years, 6 months ago

He also wanted immediate playing time, which is much more likely at Alabama. I like guys like Jackson who chose the school based on who can best develop him for the next level, among other things. If Sexton had done that then I doubt Alabama would be his first choice, although I don't think it's necessarily a bad choice for him.

It's an excuse everytime we miss on someone lol "We couldn't guarantee PT" "We would't let him play PG" "He wouldn't fit anyway" can we just agree that we botched this cycle?

maybe he'll do as well as Ben Simmons did at LSU....

Tyler, have you ever considered changing your last name? Every year, we "miss out" on more guys than we get, but things have always turned out well. Remember, Andrew Wiggins, Josh Jackson, et. al. didn't commit until the Spring.

As Brett says, this decision is not at all surprising. Who knows. If things don't work out as a "one and done" at Alabama, he might transfer to KU like Malik Newman.

The operative word at KU is "reload" not "rebuild."

Stupid question, but, anyway there is no Josh Jackson or Andrew Wiggins left for us to salvage this class. Billy Preston is the only one left that we have a chance with.

Yep Tyler, it's time to shut down the BB program. Go pound sand.

As I recall, neither Devonte Graham or Frank Mason were highly ranked out of high school. Devonte initially signed with Appalachian State out of high school. Mason signed with Towson State. Both improved dramatically after a year in prep school and wound up at KU. Self and his staff have a knack for finding players. Not to worry.

Loosen up, Tyler. Can't you take a little humor? I'm sure that you've heard this joke before, just like I've endured comments like, "Mr. Hobbs takes a vacation","Calvin and Hobbes (even spelling doesn't matter)", and "Was I born in New Mexico?" All very harmless.

You're wrong about who is left, but that's fine. I'll be glad to remind you again in the Spring.

You nailed it Brad.

Let me preface this first before anything else, let me make this clear,Agreed yes the sky IS NOT FALLING, Coach always comes through BUT Tyler is pretty much spot on as far as FIVE STAR players goes anyways. Billy Preston is really the only one left in that kind of ranking. I know if your in your right mind no one going to believe Trae Young is coming to KU that's a dead horse that is between UK and Oklahoma has been for quite some time.

They made the comment last night on the recruiting special, they said right now of you are recruiting five star players and you miss out, then you are going to have to back up and re-evaluate. Said Juco's might play a part this year cause you miss out on the 5 star - -well forget it they said cause all the four stars done signed pretty much, would fall to the three star. BUT WE GONNA BE ALL RIGHT.

Have to admit though and if you can't accept that it's been a rough year then you have additional problems but if you look at it - - -Ayton - -miss - - Porter- - miss- - Troy Brown - - miss- - Chaundee Brown - -miss, - - Sexton - -miss- - Gak - -miss - - Young - -probably not so ya not to good so far - - but we got the spring and Coach Self will be right on it - -not to worry, sounds like possibly the wooten kid, Preston maybe who knows who else - - let the season begin - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

You'd be foolish to sit there and not acknowledge that we have missed on more players this year than we have recently. There also isn't as much out there to offset these misses as in years past. No Wiggins or Jackson to right the ship. We'll be fine, but don't be ignorant of the fact that we have struggled in this years Senior class.

One thing to remember is that we take for granted that all of these guys are going to leave early like Graham, Bragg and Svi. What if they stay...... don't forget we have Newman next year and Vick will be back to help in the back court. Garret looks to be a solid addition as well. Our back court could still be pretty beastly even if we didn't add another player. I'm much more concerned about our front court depth next year personally and we really aren't "in" on any instant impact type players outside of Preston and his academics scare the bajesus out of me.

Either way, we haven't even played our first game of the season yet. Can we just enjoy the team that we've got and not freak out about what team we are going to have a year from now. We (me included) are such freaks about recruiting that we're constantly looking towards the next year and that's not fair or right to the team we have now.

Thanks Gerry and Glen. I'm not panicking at all, it's just frustrating seeing kids pick these mediocre schools over us over and over and over again, but that's the strange world of recruiting.
