After watching another point guard carve up his man-to-man defense, Kansas coach Bill Self went with a triangle-and-two defense during portions of the second half and it saved the day for Kansas on Saturday night at Allen Fielhdouse.

KU, which trailed by six points at the half despite shooting 57 percent from the floor, slowed down Kentucky's Tyler Ulis down the stretch and that frustrated the entire Kentucky offense.

Despite missing a bunch of free throws along the way, KU continued to ride a huge night by Wayne Selden Jr., who finished with 33 points, and picked up a thrilling 90-84, overtime victory over Kentucky.

Kentucky's gap in the lead in all-time wins shrinks by one. UK leads 2,194 to 2,170.

So many of Selden's points came at crucial times in both the first and second halves, and kept Kansas alive when UK was on the brink of taking control.

Although the game was not the most beautifully played basketball game you've ever seen, having the two winningest programs in college basketball doing battle on the same floor in an environment like Allen Fieldhouse, which was absolutely rocking, is good for the game of basketball.

To that end, KU put together a nice presentation and unveiling of James Naismith's original rules of basketball for the halftime entertainment.

Here’s a quick look back at some of the action:

• The game turned when: Kentucky point guard Tyler Ulis started doing his Monté Morris impersonation midway through the first half. As was the case with Morris last Monday, KU had no answer for Ulis, who scored eight points in a six-minute first-half stretch to help put UK on top heading into the locker room at halftime.

• Offensive highlight: They were not rim-rattlers but they were a good sign all the same. After sitting for a good portion of the first half, Carlton Bragg came in and showed no signs of shyness as he pulled three mid-range jumpers, two of which went down thanks to some help a good, old-fashioned shooter's touch. Selden's three-pointer from the corner with less than a minute left that put Kansas up a point also would qualify here. Huge shot. Huge night. Huge stage.

Bill Self: Jayhawks labored at times, but got job done vs. UK

Kansas basketball coach Bill Self rehashes the Jayhawks' overtime victory against fellow blue blood Kentucky, and says while KU labored offensively much of the night, the players got KU the needed result.

• Defensive highlight: It was a pretty subtle play, but huge in the grand scheme of things. After a KU drive to the rim by Perry Ellis led to the ball bouncing around off of the backboard and various sets of hands, Jamari Traylor knocked it away from Kentucky's Ulis, who appeared to secure possession. Traylor's tip went right to Frank Mason III, who stepped into a three-pointer and drilled it to put KU up 69-66 with just under 4:00 to play. Early in the OT, after deflecting a pass to the wing with his right hand, Selden went flying into the crowd (again) to save the ball and steal the possession for Kansas.

Selden, Mason and Graham on how KU beat Kentucky in OT

Kansas guards Wayne Selden Jr., Frank Mason III and Devonté Graham describe how the Jayhawks battled back to defeat Kentucky in overtime at Allen Fieldhouse.

• Key stat: Turnovers. After coughing it up 11 times in the first half, KU limited its second-half give-aways to three and that helped force overtime. Of course, KU's 18-of-31 free throw shooting in regulation also helped force overtime.

• Up next: The Jayhawks will be back in Allen Fieldhouse on Wednesday night a showdown with another heated rival when K-State comes to town for a 7 p.m. tip-off.

Charles L. Marshall, architect of AFH for POY. No matter what the season brings we’ve had two memorable wins courtesy of home court.

Darrel Stice 3 years, 10 months ago

I've seen a lot of posters on here really come down hard on Coach Self for not switching up his defense when things aren't going well. I thought the triangle-and-2, or "hybrid defense" as the announcers called, was the difference in the game. UK had no answer for it, and their offense seemed to really stall when we were in it. Kudos to Self for making a great adjustment. He definitely out-coached Calipari tonight!

Also, I think the break from conference play will be really good for our guys. It gets their mind off the conference race - and the streak - for at least one game. Maybe it'll turn out to be just what they need to snap out of the funk they've seemed to be in ever since the OU 3OT game.

Great game tonight! Great atmosphere! Rock Chalk Jayhawk!!!

Dan Leftwich 3 years, 10 months ago

Darrel, You nailed it. Coach Self showed the flexibility to get into a defense that they can't be all that comfortable playing. He really had no choice though. Ulis was getting anywhere he wanted and had them all on a string. I was so impressed with Seldon's presence of mind and courage. Particularly after last year's beat down, when every drive to score was stuffed, he took it upon himself to go to the lane under control. This bodes very well for the tournament. KU now has 4 crunch time scorers who can pressure the defense and get to the line. Now, about those free throws . . . .Aw, nothing can take the shine off of this one! How sweet it is!!

Janet Olin 3 years, 10 months ago

Hallelujah: Selden stepped up to save KU's bacon after KU missing 16 or so freebies. Kudos to Self for getting out of his comfort zone to play other kids who might not ordinarily have many minutes. Still grit my teeth when Green plays, but I understand the point. Diallo gave a short lift, as did Bragg. HUGE win from momentum standpoint. Yes, I know, home wins are expected, but this was a difference-maker in my opinion. Multiple players contributed, Coach stepped out of his comfort zone, and the result was a come-from-behind win at AFH. Never underestimate that.

Jay Scott 3 years, 10 months ago

A great team effort backing up Selden's monster night.

Don Haskins observation/question. Was this the first game in Jayhawk history when no white player saw action?

James Smith 3 years, 10 months ago

Only Psycho Jay would think of this....What a Racist!

Jay Scott 3 years, 10 months ago

No shock that you're too stupid to know who Don Haskins was. What color am I James?

Brianna Zaleski 3 years, 10 months ago

I know who Don Haskins is. How does that explain this comment? What is your point exactly? Is it some ill fated attempt at a joke that missed its mark? (No big deal, we all can relate to that) Or are you just a closet racist? Racist Jay

Jay Scott 3 years, 10 months ago

You keep looking more stupid, more racist yourself and more pathetic Bri, James is not a role model for someone who wants to be taken seriously.

Brianna Zaleski 3 years, 10 months ago

And again, no explanation. Only deflection. I have children Racist Jay, and these are the actions of a child.

Jay Scott 3 years, 10 months ago

Bri. Last attempt to help you stop being an idiot. What's racist about the observation?

Benz Junque 3 years, 10 months ago

How about if we agree that it was just stupid and completely unnecessary question to ask. It was completely bizarre and out of left field and is something that probably never even crossed the mind of anyone else that watched the game. A two second check reveals its been a whopping ONE WEEK since we had a game where no white player played for KU (vs. Texas).

If you really were curious it would have taken you five seconds to find the answer. Instead you chose to post it. Bizarro.

James Smith 3 years, 10 months ago

Brianna we do know that Psycho Racist Jay does still live at home but we think that he is between 35 and 45.

Marius Rowlanski 3 years, 10 months ago

Could Selden be the next Buddy Hield IF he comes back for his final year?

I see it as a possibility.

Brett McCabe 3 years, 10 months ago

Happy for Wayne and, of course, the team and all of Jayhawk nation.

Wayne showed earlier in the season that he could be a difference maker. He was the difference maker (squared) tonight.

Micky Baker 3 years, 10 months ago

It was a good game, and a great game for Selden who stepped up in a big way. The guys did a great job of getting UK into foul trouble in the 2nd half, but the free throw performance was horrendous. The Hawks should have won the game in regulation with free throws.

With that said, with UK in foul trouble for OT, clear advantage KU no matter where the game is played. This is the blueprint. Go to the rim, draw fouls and finish(Wayne Selden did this tonight, and everyone needs to do this more but FINISH or get fouled). Not that we need to just do this but do it when we have the right match ups and when it's there, and other guys need to be alert and cut to the basket when the help side defender tries to set up to block the shot and get some easy deuces. Then they will not be so aggressive in trying to block the shot or be a little hesitant that will result in more fouls drawn.

Benz Junque 3 years, 10 months ago

We shot 64% from the line for a team that averages just 70%. We basically were only about 2 shots shy of average. It was just more apparent because of how many free throws we shot.

James Smith 3 years, 10 months ago

Good win and one that we needed in hopes to move forward in the Big 12 with positive mojo. We were lucky with the missed free throws to send this to OT but good job gutting it out. Lucas and Traylor again show that Bill Self is going to stick with them and if he continues we will continue to let teams that we should beat stay in the game and have a chance to beat us in the tourney. I really feel for Hunter to sit there and see Traylor cost us 5 points in 20 seconds but he is still a better choice on the floor. Lucas showed how bad he is at offense in one play in that his person guarding him continues to sag into the lane and let him shoot. So he decides to dribble into the free throw line and throws up an terrible brick. So good to see Bragg do three pick and pops for good shots.

Again good win but BS continues to show questionable coaching choices.

Jay Scott 3 years, 10 months ago

Make sure you have your resume in James. Have you applied with other college teams? High school teams? YMCA teams?

Jack Hoff 3 years, 10 months ago

Wow James I respectfully disagree. I don't think you could be more wrong about this one. Number 1, Hunter had a high ankle sprain and was ruled out for this game so that shouldn't even be in the conversation, at least for this game. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure Jamari is the only player who had any blocks today and when the game was tied at 66 he made a huge hustle play to get the ball to Frank for a three. Those are the things people don't see. Jamari was big tonight. Bragg and Cheick were good tonight but Self had the right guys out there for crunch time. Let's not forget Cheick got dunked on cuz he was late to rotate. And while Bragg was good offensively today, it was during the stretch that him and Diallo were in that Kentucky made their run to eventually lead by 6 at half. Self did fine. He was clearly the better coach in this game, I don't know how anyone could argue that.

James Smith 3 years, 10 months ago

Sorry Jack did not know that about Hunter but still only saw 3 positive plays by Traylor. Again the two negative plays in 20 seconds just are terrible and it was not much later that he had a throw in play that almost cost us another TO. Just not a fan and he would not be playing for many top 10 teams.

Jay Scott 3 years, 10 months ago

In a game where the ability to bang with the bigs, get rebounds and also defend guards on switches is key, Traylor is as good as anyone in college ball and certainly the best Kansas has. Tonite was that kind of game.

Not everyone understands the game well enough to grasp why he gets minutes.

Colby Hebert 3 years, 10 months ago

Hunter was hurt, and Diallo and Bragg did get some minutes. Perry sat for most of the first half. Did you watch the wrong game, maybe the sound was off and you are confused..

James Smith 3 years, 10 months ago

Well we knew that Psycho Racist Jay had other screen names and it looks like we found one. Thanks for letting us know.

Marius Rowlanski 3 years, 10 months ago

James..the only questionable choice I had was leaving Ellis in the game, especially late when FTs really mattered.

Brianna Zaleski 3 years, 10 months ago

Jay, Greene is half white. Or do you only identity with his AA side? What a racist comment by an otherworldly fool

Jay Scott 3 years, 10 months ago

Bri. Was Haskins racist when he played only black players?

I wasn't under the impression that you were as ignorant as the rest of the Chicken Littles and as desperate for a cheap insult. Sounds like you are.

James Smith 3 years, 10 months ago

LOL...you are now Psycho Racist Jay...Keep it up!

Jay Scott 3 years, 10 months ago

What color am I James? Was it racist when America celebrated electing a black President? Face it James, you're just looking for cheap insults to add to your hate of Jayhawk basketball. Get a life.

Jay Scott 3 years, 10 months ago

Thanks Bryce, It's an excellent illustration of the type of person who demands Coach Self be fired.

Steve Zimmerman 3 years, 10 months ago

UK paid attention so much on Ellis opened up a bit for Selden. Our Fantastic-4 did very well tonight.

Brianna Zaleski 3 years, 10 months ago

James, I'm pretty sure Mick is dinged up and wasn't going to play tonight anyway, but your point is valid. LL is a complete liability with the occasional good D and Reb effort. Kudos to a Self for sitting his a$$ on the bench and finding another way. The frosh looked good 1st half, but I understand the notion that they can't be relied on in crunch time. But, you can see, they can still provide really productive mins early on... Overall, I was encouraged by Self's use of Diallo and Bragg tonight. I just hope he doesn't forget.

Barry Weiss 3 years, 10 months ago

Totally agree Brianna. I thought our two freshmen played really, really well and would like to see their minutes increase. Its very clear that when Diallo is in, opposing guards do not take it to the hoop. The one play he got jammed on, he did the right thing staying with his man or the guard would have dished for that guy to jam. The defense broke down at the perimeter. Not sure how we can get out guards to stay in front of their man better.

Brianna Zaleski 3 years, 10 months ago

Jay, do tell us, master of deception and innuendo, what was your point? Because it came across as incredibly racist for those of us who are too stupid to understand your world class wit.... Btw, what does it matter what race you are? A racist comment is a racist comment no matter the color of the fool uttering it.... Racist Jay. That's your new name. Enjoy!

Jay Scott 3 years, 10 months ago

Bri, you do enough to prove you know nothing. Don't add to it by acting like James.

Brianna Zaleski 3 years, 10 months ago

Deflecting isn't an explanation. We are not as stupid as you think we are, Racist Jay

Jay Scott 3 years, 10 months ago

Explain what. It was an observation. You're the one desperately trying to add some sinister agenda. You've managed to make James be less than the biggest fool. Not your best moment.

Brianna Zaleski 3 years, 10 months ago

And an incredibly stupid and false observation. Greene is white. Plus, the reference to Don Haskins and the all black starting lineup versus Rupp and all white Kentucky, had massive social and racial overtones. Don't act like its some casual reference. Unless it was a stupid joke gone awry. In which case, you should be man/ woman enough to admit and move on. But I feel that you're too vain and prideful to admit as such... It's funny to watch you squirm for once, Racist Jay.

Jay Scott 3 years, 10 months ago

Bri. Greene was half white a minute ago. Now he's all white? Is Obama all white too now?

I'm not "squirming". I'm just embarrassed for you that you joined someone like James in acting a fool. Stop. You're not that bright, but you're better than this. When you sober up/ calm down or whatever, and look at how you've jumped on a bandwagon with someone like James, I'll happily accept your apology and let bygones be bygones.

Brianna Zaleski 3 years, 10 months ago

What? Obama? Half white, half black, full white, full black. Does it matter?... Man, you are really an idiot. I usually sit back here and watch you make a fool of yourself on a daily basis, without chiming in, but tonight I felt compelled since you had stepped in such a heaping pile of crow and refuse to be a man and eat it. But, as is the case w petulant children, they don't know how to admit a mistake and move on. Preferring to dig their heels in to make a point that is long gone or was never there. I don't expect anything big of you, Racist Jay, only more of the same. So consider this stupid conversation closed and consider me as, yet another person on this site, who has lost what little respect I had for you. For you are only interested in engaging in petty childish arguments. You aren't interested, in the least, about the Jayhawks or their progress. You only come here to engage in child's play. And I engaged you tonight, no doubt, but in the end, I had some fun and you re-established yourself as the board idiot with a new twist of racist. Well done Racist Jay

Jay Scott 3 years, 10 months ago

It matters to you a great deal it seems. I made a simple historical observation.

You and you ilk went bananas. Bri. You look like a complete idiot. Stop.

Benz Junque 3 years, 10 months ago

It was an idiotic and irrelevant point, not "historic". You're trying too hard to defend a dumb post that people are calling you out on.

James Smith 3 years, 10 months ago

Psycho Racist James said this..."The cute thing about the CLs is that they can't resist responding when mocked" So funny to see you scrabbling in your Mom's basement to turn this around. What a Pathetic Life you live and now after your Racist comment it is getting clear who you really are.

James Smith 3 years, 10 months ago

Agree on Ellis Steve but our guards seem to worry so much about the pick coming and play so soft against it. With the new rules they need to be more aggressive against the pick and will probably get more calls in their favor. Psycho Racist Jay's shut down guard Graham looked so bad and out of position many times. Glad to see Self finally do some coaching and change up the defense some.

Allin Herring 3 years, 10 months ago

I agree for one of the few times we actually got to see self make a defensive adjustment to something other than a rearrangement of his mam to man and it worked very well and I wave my hat to his his coaching change. JOB WELL DONE! I think they are going to get use to this defense because our guards just plain not keep up with a quick active guard. Especially Graham

James Smith 3 years, 10 months ago

Wow look out Allin Psycho Racist Jay is going to come after you on this comment about his shutdown guard Graham. Enjoy!

Reggie Flenory 3 years, 10 months ago

Kansas will go as far as selden can take us

James Smith 3 years, 10 months ago

Reggie I agree as long as you play Lucas and Traylor where are we going to get offense.

Marius Rowlanski 3 years, 10 months ago

Bragg is better than Lucas or Traylor on offense..hell, Diallo is probably better as well but both need to improve on D before they'll get more minutes.

Bryce Landon 3 years, 10 months ago

Memo to Coach Self - if you want to win even a share of the Big 12 this year, from now on, play the triangle-and-two. Had you done so in the previous three losses, you might have been in position to actually win, or at least not lost by an embarrassing margin. Remember, you didn't get to the 2012 NCAA finals on the strength of a man-to-man, but on the strength of a triangle-and-two. Since your man-to-man keeps getting eaten alive, and other teams are shooting 45-55% on us regularly, make the triangle-and-two a permanent part of your game plan.

Oh, and can you teach your team to shoot FTs? We could have won this game in regulation 10-12 if your guys could hit their damn FTs.

But don't get me wrong - I am very happy your team won tonight. And I'm especially pleased with Wayne Selden playing his ass off tonight. ESPN said he wanted to be the alpha dog of the team. He needs to be more than that - he needs to be the team leader. Dub him the on-court leader of the team.

Bryce Landon 3 years, 10 months ago

Oh, and memo to the Journal-World - the KU-KSU game tips off at 8 pm CT, not 7 pm. Tune in at 7 pm, and you'll be an hour early.

Brett McCabe 3 years, 10 months ago

So....if you are a KU football prospect on your official visit, you friggin' hit the lottery this weekend! Beautiful weather, a classic game in a classic setting, wined and dined....not a bad way to spend a weekend!

Jay Scott 3 years, 10 months ago

Indeed. Hopefully it help with a few commits.

James Smith 3 years, 10 months ago

OMG did Psycho Racist Jay just make a positive comment for Brett?

Brett McCabe 3 years, 10 months ago

Jay, again, you are on the wrong board: type EMAW in your browser. You are no Jayhawk, by any measure. Although I don't even think that your Willy brethren are dumb enough to make a comment as stupid as yours.

Jay Scott 3 years, 10 months ago

Brett. You poor thing. I just complimented you because you said something insightful. Actually, your football comments are usually pretty good. For the record I liked your comment on the other article that you made about Cal and respect too. It was good.

Then you had to go and say something really, really stupid. Brett. Someone who disagrees with Chicken Littles about their idiotic criticism of Coach Self and Jayhawk players could hardly be a Wildcat fan. It's such a stupid premise for an insult that it outdistances your usual stupidity by light years. Seriously. Develop some self control. Stop saying astoundingly stupid things and you won't get called on it. It's that easy!

You're likely a nice guy. I really, truly don't like having to respond to your idiotic insults and comments by revealing them as such. It's neither challenging nor rewarding.

Andy Tweedy 3 years, 10 months ago

I'm a college basketball fan, but basketball was NOT my game, couldn't play a lick. So while I see a lot of the same things that many of you see when I watch Lucas, Jay Bilas really seems to like the guy, and Jay Bilas does know basketball. So I'm going to assume that once again, Bill Self probably knows more about basketball than any of us that are sitting on our couches. 201-9 at Allen Fieldhouse? Are you kidding me? I love the guy, and I never understand the hatin' that he gets on this page sometimes!

DaNeille Dani Davis 3 years, 10 months ago

Good win for KU. Rock Chalk. Any videos out there of the halftime show with the rules or the video board? Sounds like we missed something incredible! Someone please post a video!!

James Smith 3 years, 10 months ago

Andy Jay Bilas works for ESPN and yes played basketball but that does not mean that he what he says is right. If he knows so much why is he not a coach? Probably because working for ESPN you do not have to back up anything that you say. The EYE test tells many people that Lucas is a good rebounder and plays OK defense in the post but he not worthy of the minutes that he gets. Honestly he would not play many minutes on other teams because his lack of offense really hurts Ellis's game because no one needs to guard Lucas. Plus if Lucas got the ball a couple feet from the bucket he would continue to show that he would fumble it away or miss a bunny. He is a Junior and really has not improved as a player. Sorry just my observation.

Barry Weiss 3 years, 10 months ago

agree James. I really like the kid, he is a decent rebounder, but not much of a shot blocker and a real liability on offense. His defender always sags off him to help defend someone else in the low post. The one play Lucas got the ball down low, he could not even dunk. I just hope Mickelson gets well soon and Coach ups the minutes for Bragg and Diallo. No way we go far with LL starting every game and into the dance.

Marius Rowlanski 3 years, 10 months ago

Ellis hurts Ellis's game more than anyone else ever could. Did you see his first FT after the tech. foul? I agree that Lucas does allow the double team but Selden received far more double teams as Ellis all but sat the first half because of dumb fouls.

I think Bilas is the best BB announcer in the business - just an opinion - but at least he can say more than a former coach who talks in catch phrases like "Diaper Dandy", ."It was flat-out scary, baby.", “He’s a PTPer tonight, baby!”

Vitale is more entertaining than insightful, Bilas knows his stuff. Kirk Herbstreit is his football persona. Again, just my opinion James.

Craig Alexander 3 years, 10 months ago

Great win. One thing about photography is that it catches a glimpse into what is going on behind the scenes. Look at the baseline view video opening picture. Why does Greene look like the basket everybody else is celebrating is no big deal? Maybe I'm seeing things that aren't really there but that doesn't look right.

Austin Lopez 3 years, 10 months ago

Can we enjoy a win without you guys complaining about something???

James Smith 3 years, 10 months ago

Talk to Psycho Racist Jay and his split personality Colby and maybe they will listen to you.
