Busy recruiting weekend nets 2 top targets for KU football

With the February 3 national signing day drawing near, the Kansas University football program got some help moving past the disappointment of missing out on Oklahoma-bound Lawrence prospect Amani Bledsoe on Saturday night, when two-star running back Khalil Herbert and two-star cornerback Julian Chandler orally committed to KU.

Both players confirmed their commitments on Twitter.

Herbert, a 5-foot-10, 190-pound back from Heritage High in Plantation, Florida, has trained with former KU standout Tony Sands during his prep career. He committed to KU on his fifth and final official visit Saturday night and picked the Jayhawks over offers Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Fordham, Georgia State and Mississippi State.

KU running backs coach Reggie Mitchell was the lead recruiter for Herbert and had been pursuing him hard during the past several weeks.

Jon Kirby, of JayhawkSlant.com, said Herbert had emerged as the Jayhawks' top running back target in the Class of 2016. And Herbert told Kirby last week that Sands had a huge impact on his interest in Kansas.

“(Sands) told me he loved it there,” Herbert told Kirby. “He said he wanted to go away and he was able to make his stamp on a program. I want to be able to do the same thing.”

Chandler, a two time, all district selection from Hightower High in Texas, had been on the radar of KU D-Line coach Calvin Thibodeaux for quite some time.

The 6-foot, 170-pound defensive back previously had committed to Louisiana Tech but de-committed earlier this week and on Saturday night pledged to join the Jayhawks.

Chandler also held offers from Nevada, New Mexico and North Texas.

The addition of Herbert and Chandler, along with all of the players who counted forward, signed with the program in December or are orally committed and waiting to sign with KU on Feb. 3, brings KU within three players of filling its 2016 recruiting class.

A handful of other prospects joined the two newest Jayhawks on official visits this weekend and more are slated to visit next weekend, as well.

This is not good folks.

Beaty - known as a good Texas recruiter with all his relationships in the lone star state is consistently bringing in 2 star rated talent.

This isn't gonna cut it.

We failed to seal up the border, and lost Bledsoe.

If 2 star talent is viewed as "two top targets"....I'm really having doubts about moving the needle in becoming competitive in this league.

Thanks Lew

Brett McCabe 3 years, 10 months ago

So Doug and Michael, is this your version of patience with a new head coach?

An 0-12 football team and what kind of a recruiting class were you expecting? Right now, if you look at the average star rating of our commits, it's way higher than our actual end-of-year ranking on the field last year. So, in the real world, progress is being made.

I like the way that you and others come on here and show disrespect to a bunch of kids you've never watched play a down - guys who have all committed to becoming Jayhawks, to coming to a school where the only thing that is facing them is a long, hard uphill climb - and a bunch of idiots who live in the past, forever.

When we start winning, I hope that we don't have to hear anything from either of you.

Kyle Cornish 3 years, 10 months ago

Hey Doug,

Did you expect TCU to bring in 5 star recruits in basketball after its 0-fer in conference? No? So stop it. We are paying this guy 200k more than the Alabama strength coach!!! If he simply shows up every day and nothing else, he is doing beyond his worth.

Ashwin Rao 3 years, 10 months ago

I agree with your first line, but had a huge laugh on the 2nd one. But I do get your point that we should not "settle", but we need to contain our expectations during the initial (whatever that may be) period of building up a program.

Doug Cramer 3 years, 10 months ago

Brett - remember all that patience and loyalty you had for Weis ?

You know as well as I do, Beaty can be the best coach in the world, but if he can't bring in the jimmys and the joes, it won't matter.

Even Gil consistently brought in 3 star talent. I just thought by this season Beaty would have some leverage on higher end talent. The fact that he doesn't is raising some red flags in my mind.

Dirk Medema 3 years, 10 months ago

"by this season"?

This is his first class, and he's trying to bring them to a 0-12 team with a 65 man roster and no significant tradition in football. You're really optimistic if you expected to turn things around in 13 months.

And while you're "Even Gill"ing, you're also forgetting that it was a time when we were one season removed from the "glory days" of repeat bowl games, not to mention that half those guys were flunking out of school and abandoned the program, which is what started digging this hole we're in.

Brett McCabe 3 years, 10 months ago

Doug, for accuracy's sake, I didn't start to turn on Weis until the end of his second season, and for a lot of reasons, many of which had to do with the suspicious way he was handling the program.

Doug Cramer 3 years, 10 months ago

"I didn't start to turn on Weis until the end of his second season"

Exactly...you and I...along with many other had a lot of discussion about Weis back in the day. You were quick to criticize my concerns over Weis. So here we go again. This is Beaty's 2nd class, and you would have thought that he would at least move the needle in bringing in better talent. Where it stands now, his talent is ranked dead last amongst all BCS schools for 2016 recruitment.

Brett McCabe 3 years, 10 months ago

I think that you are the only person with that expectation.

Virtually no one was thrilled with the Weis hire, so be careful of your revisionist history. Weis had a plan, he was our coach, I was prepared to give him some time to execute his plan.

Beaty has inherited a much worse program than Weis did. Your expectations need to match the level of the challenge. You can't put a new coat of paint on a house when it's still on fire.

Doug Cramer 3 years, 10 months ago

Brett - you have forgotten about J-Ross and I continuously getting grilled by you and Aaron Paisley for saying that Weis was sending this program into a death spiral.

Yes you were a Weis supporter through and through. Go back and look at the boards.

Aaron Paisley 3 years, 10 months ago

Turner Gill came aboard 2 years removed from an Orange Bowl appearance and a KU that had won 13 games the previous two years. Beaty came into a program that had won 10 games total in the previous 5 years. Not exactly similar situations to be recruiting into.

If you're a 3 or 4 star recruit, you going to program that's won 10 games in now 6 years? Didn't think so.

Tyler Fox 3 years, 10 months ago

Admittedly this is a rarity, but Aqib Talib was a 2 star and Joc Crawford was a 4 star.

Michael Bennett 3 years, 10 months ago

Doug, I agree. I've been saying for a couple months that Beatty's alleged prowess as a recruiter is BS. He completely ignores 3 kansas players for 2 players that have the magic word "Texas". He'll be gone in 3 years and KU will still be a laughing stalk.

Kyle Cornish 3 years, 10 months ago

Michael, Tell me one 3 star Kansas kid Beaty has ignored... Don't worry I'll wait. No one? Just a kid who no D1 school had offered? And you want us to waste a valuable scholarship on them? Great call Michael! Offer the 1 star Kansas kid a full scholarship even though he turns down a walk-on spot.

Sam Walters 3 years, 10 months ago

Actually their are two of them and four more two stars. And the line about "just a kid who no D1 schools had offered", seems a little unnecessary. How about the coach who promised to turn over every rock in the state offer a scholarship to the Gatorade player of the year in that state? That's all anyone of us who wants to see more KS kids on the roster is saying.

Brett McCabe 3 years, 10 months ago

By the way, welcome to our two new recruits. RCJHK! Good things are coming.

Waylon Cook 3 years, 10 months ago

So if mangino got a two star guy outta texas he was magic? If beaty does he will be fired? Lets see how this plays out. Herbert had an sec offer correct?

Humpy Helsel 3 years, 10 months ago

I guess our average of one good team per decade back to the 60's history, known as a "basketball school," don't fill our stands regularly at home games in our small stadium with its until recently track around the field, 3 coaches in last 5 years, along with fact good players having choices of going to established football programs where they win regularly...

Should I continue?...has nothing to do with our struggles to recruit 3 and 4 star players. Yea...it is probably time to fire our current coach in order to give other coaches confidence to come to KU to coach football. I hear 3,4, and 5 star recruits are lining up to play football at KU, and for some reason, Beatty just can't seem to close the deal. Somebody get Nick Saban on the phone! How about Harbaugh? Rumor has it they and a bevy of top coaches are longing to coach at KU, if the AD would just give them a chance.

Or... we could buy season tickets next year and let the AD know how tough this job is. And we could acknowledge Beatty under extremely adverse history and conditions is slowly making progress to rebuild a dead program from the ground up.

Shane Mettlen 3 years, 10 months ago

Aqib Talib Chris Harris Todd Reesing Anthony Collins Charlton Keith Dexton Fields Joe Mortenson Jon Cornish Kevin Kane Charles Gordon Derek Fine

Some 2-star recruits.

Jonathan Briles 3 years, 10 months ago

I very much agree with your sentiment, but want to clarify that Reesing was a three star recruit, but also want to add the names James Holt, Jake Laptad, and Steven Johnson. I also want to point out that the rankings are extremely flawed and that being a four star recruit means nothing. In fact, if you're a four star recruit coming to KU it almost guarantees you will not succeed. Traevohn Wrench, Marquel Combs, Chris Martin, Darrian Miller, Brandon Bourbon, Keeston Terry, Prinz Kande, Quintin Woods, Jocques Crawford, Nathan D'Cunha, Ryan Murphy, Anthony Webb. Those are all four star recruits from the last decade who did little to nothing for the KU program. The list of four star recruits who did accomplish something for KU. Tony Pierson, Toben Opurum, Bradley McDougald. We have had 15 four star recruits in the last decade and only three of them have made an impact. The stars next to a name means next to nothing. Its a decent indicator at best, but at the end of the day no one knows who is going to crumble under the pressure and who is going to use that pressure to turn into a diamond. We won the Orange Bowl without a single four star recruit contributing. To make things more interesting we had a QB whose only other offer was Duke throwing to a high school QB (Meier) and handing off to a guy we recruited to play LB (McAnderson) and he had a guy we recruited to play DE blocking his blind side (Collins). Our deadly kick returner was a converted QB (Herford). Both our starting CB's came to us to play WR (Harris and Talib). You can't judge a recruiting class the year it comes in. You judge it the year they are all gone based on what they did. 2013 was the "dream team". That class was supposed to save our program. It had two four star guys who were "studs" and 24 total guys littered with "immediate contributors". That class single handedly destroyed this program. There are only 5 guys from that class still on the roster. Lets give Beaty some time to show us why he recruited these guys. I'm confident he knows something we don't.

Bee Bee 3 years, 10 months ago

If STARS don't mean anything, do you think Nick Saban could win TITLES with KU's players? Would KU be 0-12 with Bama's players? To me, HEART is as important as stars. Having said that, you still have to have the horses to win consistently at high levels.

Jonathan Briles 3 years, 10 months ago

Bama gets nothing but 4 and 5 star guys so I don't think they are all going to be busts. I'm just saying that just because someone has a 4 star ranking doesn't mean they will be a stud and just because someone has a 2 star ranking doesn't mean they will be terrible. You're absolutely right it is about heart. Bama gets their pick of the litter. We are picking up the scraps. I was not saying that all four star players are bad or that we would do badly with their players. I was simply saying that its foolish to hang all your expectations on the number of stars attatched to a name. Its a lot more than that.

Brett McCabe 3 years, 10 months ago

Don't forget our two 5-star quarterbacks....

Bee Bee 3 years, 10 months ago

They were coached by Mangino. Who could actually coach.

Brett McCabe 3 years, 10 months ago

That's what the like button is for. But, hey, great insight.

Austin Lopez 3 years, 10 months ago

According to ESPN out of the top 10 players in Kansas, KU have landed ZERO for this years class. And I see some people saying Kansas doesn't have a lot of good players will out of ESPN's top 10 KS players 9 of them are headed to a power five school with 1 being uncommitted, so can we stop making excuses for David Beaty and just face it, he feed us what we wanted to hear, and we bought it. And By the way here is the list (Xavier Kelly - Clemson, Jeff George - Tennessee, Amani Bledsoe - Oklahoma, Ben Powers - Oklahoma, Byron Pringle - Kansas State, Tyler Howell - Missouri, Teven Jenkins - Oklahoma State, Isaiahh Loudermilk - Wisconsin, and Garrison Wright - Minnesota.... smh all I have been hearing is talk, actions speak louder than words..

Dirk Medema 3 years, 10 months ago

There is definitely talent in KS. Unfortunately, all those players were given and took opportunities to go to at least bowl teams, and most of those teams were contending for conference, if not national championships. Of course those guys are going to pass up a shot at a NC for a spot on a FCS-65 man roster. Who stole the dam magic wand?

Greg Ledom 3 years, 10 months ago

Did you really expect Loudermilk to go anywhere else. I mean, come on! I have no idea why any of these kids wouldn't want 0-12 Kansas over these other schools.....Look, there is no doubt that actions speak louder than words. Can we at least give Beaty some time to prove his actions? Three FULL recruiting seasons (that means two (2) more, to prove himself. This isn't a sprint folks, it's a Kansas marathon, which means it will take even longer. I'm in for giving this staff a few more years to prove themselves.

Brett McCabe 3 years, 10 months ago

While we continue to laud Bill Snyder for recruiting in-state, let's also hold him responsible for his losing record this year.

David McNickle 3 years, 10 months ago

And landing ONE of the top ten recruits in Kansas.

Austin Lopez 3 years, 10 months ago

I don't think anyone has a problem going with 2/3 stars I think if your going to go for those 2 and 3 stars can you please take a chance on a couple in your own backyard, look at Kansas State for a example, I think the fact that he is mostly going for 2/3 star players in other states instead of going after SOME not All in his own backyard is rubbing off on some people the wrong way, well at least thats my opinion, I can't speak for everyone else....

Dirk Medema 3 years, 10 months ago

I think he has something like 40 of those KS 2* players on the team, and some even contributed and likely will be promoted from walk-ons to scholarships when they're available. In this way, he is following the KState model.

Matt Schierlman 3 years, 10 months ago

Welcome to the team Khalil and Julian! Hope to add you to that long list of two-star recruits that turned out great!

Robert Brock 3 years, 10 months ago

If you can't recruit in your own back yard, you can't recruit.

Doug Cramer 3 years, 10 months ago

Will make this easy for everyone to see what I'm talking about. The following link is the rivals 2016 recruiting class Team Rankings:

Guess where KU's class ranks amongst ALL BCS schools ? Anyone want to take a guess ?

http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/teamrank/2016/all/all

Brett McCabe 3 years, 10 months ago

Simple minds offer simple solutions.

KU's recruiting class is limited by available scholarships. Seriously, if you are going to post this crap, at least act like you have a college degree.

Also, why don't you also point out who is only 5 spots ahead of us? The miracle-worker, the god of football gods, the recruiting master......Bill Snyder.

Jonathan Briles 3 years, 10 months ago

I'm not trying to say that the guys we have brought in will make the rest of the Big 12 jealous, but we have a better class than advertised. We are TEN scholarships short of a full class. If Rivals could add all the transfers and guys that counted towards last years class to this years class we would be much much higher in the rankings. Beaty is also known for using his big time connections to land kids who are under the radar. Guys who have not started as long or dealt with injuries , but have more talent than what the recruiting sites realize. Lets at least let him have his due time. He is fighting an uphill battle and does not need any more setbacks so it would be nice if the fans were helping support him on this climb.

Fred Davis 3 years, 10 months ago

I don't think casual fans - or even some die-hard fans, truly understand how dire the football situation has gotten at Kansas prior to Beaty arriving. I've talked to some folks with knowledge of the program and there are segments of the administration that have given up on the program in the wake of Weis and Gill, so to say Beaty has his hands full is an understatement. The KU program is the biggest joke in college football and you're talking about trying to sell 17 and 18-year olds on the merit of joining the worst D1 program in America. That's no easy task. But Beaty and his staff have the right mindset and I know for a fact they're putting in work here in Houston and Texas. Getting Kansas kids? Eh, that''ll come eventually. With all due respect, give me the two-star TX kid over some Mill Valley kid any day. For those of you that have never seen Texas high school football, there's a reason Beaty is pounding the pavement down here. Give the man time, he was given the worst job in America, and is slowly but surely starting to build something. And honestly, who cares where the kids come from - at this point, give me 2-3 wins and I think we're on to something.

Brett McCabe 3 years, 10 months ago

I've actually posted this multiple times: we hired a guy with recruiting ties to Texas and then guys come on here complaining about how he is recruiting Texas kids. It's like trying to explain the concept of "classy behavior" to a purple pussycat.

As you said, it will take a little time to build up relationships in-state. Weis did a lot of damage. As posted by another commenter, it will take two more recruiting classes to determine our success on the recruiting trail.

David Williams 3 years, 10 months ago

Hi Fred - might you be able to elaborate on who are the "segments of the administration," ie KU Athletics or Admin at large (ie BGL)? Zenger screwed it up so badly...the fact that he is still employed speaks volumes about this inherent problem at KU. Blows my mind when you have SEC *coaches fired for 9-3 regular seasons. It is hard to take KU as an institution seriously when you see the lack of sense of urgency. You absolutely CANNOT "give up" on FB and be a member of a Power 5 conference. It starts at the top, and there are changes that should be made.

Michael Maris 3 years, 10 months ago

Well, if one does not the ☆☆☆☆☆ Rankings from Rivals.com. Then, start using 24/7 as your source for ☆☆☆☆☆ Rankings. The majority of the 24/7 personnel actually left Rivals back in the days when Bobby Burton and crew left (when Yahoo purchased the Rivals products). Took Bill "The" King a little longer to leave Rivals Radio (due to the fact that he was still under contract at the time with Rivals radio agreement with SiriusXM radio. But eventually, the show was no longer called Rivals Radio when Bill King new show was brought back on SiriusXM Radio. Now, Bill King's show is no longer on SiriusXM Radio. He's on local radio in Nashville, TN.

So, start using Jayhawks 24/7 for your star ranking. You'll see more 3 star rankings there, than on Rivals.com site.

Michael Lorraine 3 years, 10 months ago

I’m pretty sure if you go back and check the programs that have dug themselves out of a hole, they didn’t do it by suddenly becoming proficient at landing highly desirable athletes. The idea that Beaty is going to recruit his way out of our dilemma is based on wishful thinking. We are 0-12 and the worst team in a P5 conference this decade. That’s all you need to know about recruiting KU football. If we are ever to return to some degree of respectability it won’t be by an influx of great talent but by great coaching. Beaty and his staff will have to find high character athletes and instill in them the belief they can win.

Michael Bennett 3 years, 10 months ago

Hey Kyle: Christian Jegen 6' 2" 200 lb WR or Safety. Otis Taylor award winner for best receiver in KC area. Better prospect than half the kids he signed. Look at Austin's post, 9 of the top 10 in KS signed with power 5. KU Zilch signings. Brett, you're on drugs if you think Beatty is turning anything around. He'll be gone after 2 more years.

Matt Schierlman 3 years, 10 months ago

I'd love to dwell on our recruiting rankings too, but I'll wait and see how the players actually pan out first. It's hard to gauge which players are going to develop, which ones are "gamers", and which ones are "busts".

Also, I've lived half my life in Texas the other in Kansas/Missouri. Been to many high school games. In my opinion, the level of competition is greater in Texas. It's like the equivalent to watching FBS vs. FCS. I know Kansas/Missouri high school football has some good talent, but the players have not been going against the same level as these Texas players have. If I were to look for a hidden 2-star gem, Texas is the place to go.

Jim Stauffer 3 years, 10 months ago

Most are making the same mistake when they evaluate this class. Many of the players that count toward '16 are not listed on the commitment list. They are already here. If you look at a list of all those who count toward '16 along with the walk-ons, you will find quite a bit of talent in this group.

Plus, even the first year's group have fared well so far. This staff CAN recruit and are doing it against all odds. I think Cramer should be banned from the stadium when we start winning next year.

Michael Maris 3 years, 10 months ago

So, how many Grey-shirts are on the team (right now)? I remember seeing Tait mention a few names in a previous article. OL'man Cam Durley being one of them (I believe). It looks like the QB from NOLA is going to be jumping on ship by tomorrow evening (as well).

Austin Lopez 3 years, 10 months ago

Hey Kyle, well TCU did land a ESPN 100 prospect in Karviar Shepherd, Remember him? He choose TCU over Kansas back in 2013 and he was a hometown kid for TCU? Well lets see TCU are where they are today because of a hometown kid named Shepherd, but my point is TCU locked down there boarders which is why they are where they are today, and Kansas still has yet to lock down there border and land the elite players in Kansas, so lets not compare Kansas to TCU situation.....

Cora Smith 3 years, 10 months ago

Hey Matt! What happened this weekend? No signees? Will they even be able to give away all of their scholarships? Thanks.
