Kansas soccer drops opener

Kansas’ Grace Hagan scored on a second-half penalty kick, but the Jayhawks’ soccer team fell to Minnesota, 2-1, in its season opener Friday at Rock Chalk Park.

KU managed just four shots in the first half but outshot Minnesota 18-11 in the second half.

“This game is a tough one to swallow because we had so many great chances in the second half and couldn’t convert,” KU coach Mark Francis said. “We were so flat to start the game and they really took advantage of that. So we need to learn from this one and hopefully the better result will come on Sunday (vs. Marquette).”

Simone Kolander gave Minnesota a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 20th minute. The Gophers went up 2-0 when April Bockin scored on a penalty kick with just over 20 minutes to play.

Seven minutes later, KU cut the lead in half on Hagan’s goal.

The Jayhawks will meet Marquette at 7 p.m. Sunday at Rock Chalk Park.
