— Kansas State students will have to sign a sportsmanship pledge before they can pick up their tickets for sporting events this year.

The pledge requires students to refrain from using profanity and inappropriate chants and to show respect for all athletes, coaches, fans and officials.

The Wichita Eagle reports the sportsmanship pledge is the first in the Big 12 Conference.

The pledge comes after problems arose during a Kansas State-Kansas basketball game last season in Manhattan. Students chanted inappropriate language during the game and stormed the court afterward, and one student seemed to intentionally bump a Kansas player.

Kansas State officials say students who behave badly during games will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

Sign a pledge? What's the point of that other than killing a few trees to get the paper to be signed? Just ask the fans to use common sense and make sure security is reasonable at events. Maybe K-State is different, but at Allen Fieldhouse it's asked over the loud speakers before games for all fans to not use profanity or do stupid stuff which is just as good as asking people to sign a "pledge".

Stupid people will still do stupid things signed pledge or not and with the "students who behave badly during games will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis" makes me think they aren't adding any new penalties through the pledge... So the student conduct rules and penalties for the university that are already in use for all students should suffice.

This way, when they screw up, they can be held fully accountable. Makes it easier to levy a punishment.

No dead trees...there are electronic forms these days and the server will be sucking up electricity whether they use it for this or not.

A Pledge Pin should be required... ala "Animal House"

What would be an appropriate penalty? Banishing them to the barn or woodshed probably wouldn't be viewed as punishment to them.

They are already being punished enough ... They are going to KSU for Gods sake...

"students who behave badly during games will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis." and how is that different than before? But I have to admit, leave it to KSU to set new records by being the first!

Too bad Missouri never needed to sign a pledge... not that it would have mattered.

Chances this pledge is some lawyer's idea to protect Hog U from "lawsuits": 98%
