KU’s Perry Ellis named to preseason all-Big 12 team; Cheick Diallo freshman of year

Kansas University senior forward Perry Ellis was named to the five-player preseason all-Big 12 men’s basketball team today while freshman Cheick Diallo was named Big 12 preseason freshman of the year in a vote of league coaches.

Buddy Hield of Oklahoma was named preseason player of the year. He joined Ellis on the all-league team with Baylor’s Rico Gathers, Iowa State’s Georges Niang and Texas’ Isaiah Taylor.

KU’s Frank Mason III was honorable mention all league with Baylor’s Taurean Prince, Iowa State’s Monte Morris and Jameel McKay, Oklahoma State’s Phil Forte and West Virginia’s Devin Williams.

Ellis, Niang and Hield were unanimous picks to the all-league team. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players. Iowa State’s Deonte Burton was named newcomer of the year. Ellis has been honored for work on and off the court. The Wichita senior was the 2014-15 Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was joined by Hield and Taylor on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, while Niang was part of the academic second team.
