KU’s Stigler wins Big 12 hurdles

By Staff Reports     May 18, 2015

? Kansas University senior Michael Stigler claimed his fourth consecutive 400-meter hurdle title on Sunday at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Stigler — despite wind gusts to 30 mph — won the event in 49.67 seconds, more than two seconds faster than the runner-up, pacing the KU men to a fifth-place finish in the team race.

KU’s women placed fourth.

“I thought we had a really solid team effort from both the men and women this weekend,” KU coach Stanley Redwine said. “Michael Stigler and Sydney Conley performed like true champions, and we had a lot of young athletes that competed well. We were a few points from where we thought we should be, but I was proud of the way our people performed.”

Stigler’s win marked just the fourth time in Big 12 Outdoor Championship history an athlete has been victorious in an event in four consecutive years. It was also the first time in program history a Kansas male has won four straight individual conference championships.

Also Sunday, KU’s Josh Munsch placed fourth in the 1,500 meters, in 4:07.61, and fourth in the 5,000, in 14:35.27.

Other KU highlights: Hannah Richardson placed third in the 1,500 (4:29.34); Conley and Zainab Sanni placed 4-5 in the 100; Sanni took seventh in the 200 (23.63); Colleen O’Brien took fifth in the high jump (1.81 meters, or 5 feet, 11 1/4 inches); Grace Pickell was sixth in the high jumps (1.76 meters, 5-9 1/4); Daina Levy took third (50.96 meters, 167-2) and Dasha Tsema seventh (49.07, 161-0) in the discus; and Ezekial Welch (14.97 meters, 49-1 1/2) took fifth and Barden Adams (14.90, 48-10 3/4) sixth in the triple jump.
