Two lopsided losses in doubles cost Kansas University the doubles point, and the Jayhawks never recovered in a 4-3 tennis loss to Southern Methodist on Saturday.
KU dropped 6-3 and 6-2 decisions at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles to lose the doubles points for an early 1-0 deficit it couldn’t overcome, despite singles victories later from Smith Hinton, Madison Harrison and Summer Collins as Nos. 2-4.
“We’ve got to get our doubles corrected,” Kansas coach Todd Chapman said. “We gave up two doubles matches without competing the way we needed to. I thought we had some positive things happen. We fought really hard in about four spots. We went away in the second set in a couple of spots, and we have to get that cleaned up.”
Hinton downed Anna Kate Anderson, 6-4, 6-1; Harrison upended Dasha Sharapova, 6-0, 5-7, 6-0; and Collins edged Yana Erkeeva, 7-6, 2-6, 6-0.
The Jayhawks will host Kansas State in a Senior Day match at noon Saturday at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
