Platoon system planned at Kentucky

Kentucky coach John Calipari has said he will use a “platoon system” this season in which 10 or 11 players could go about 20 minutes a game.

KU coach Bill Self was asked if he thought coach Cal really would go through with the plan.

“I have no idea. I have my thoughts about it, which I think could be kind of fun,” Self said. “I can’t believe he wouldn’t do that based on how adamant he is that he was going to do it. There are still situations in which they can certainly exploit you from a depth standpoint and wear you down without question. That would be a huge advantage.

“Now it’s whether or not people can take advantage of matchups knowing they are going to have certain guys in the game for three, four, five minutes at a time,” Self added.

KU will play Kentucky in the Champions Classic on Nov. 18 in Indianapolis.

“They are loaded. If I’m not mistaken they have six guys taller than our tallest guy,” Self gushed. KU’s tallest players are Landen Lucas and Hunter Mickelson (6-10). UK has 7-0 Dakari Johnson and Willie Cauley-Stein, 6-11 Karl-Anthony Towns, 6-10 Trey Lyles and 6-9 Marcus Lee and Derek Willis.

“Their guards are 6-6. They are big,” Self added of guards Andrew and Aaron Harrison.
