Kansas men’s basketball signee Cliff Alexander has been named the Naismith Boys High School Player of the Year, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Friday.

Currently listed as the No. 4 overall recruit by, Alexander, a 6-foot-9, 240-pound power forward from Curie High School in Chicago, was one of three finalists for the Naismith honor — an elite list that included fellow KU signee Kelly Oubre, a guard from Henderson, Nev.

Alexander, who was also named the Chicago Sun-Times Player of the Year on Friday, averaged 24 points, 15 rebounds and six blocked shots in 2013-14, according to the Sun-Times.

Alexander is the second-straight Jayhawk to earn the Naismith honor. Current KU freshman guard Andrew Wiggins was the 2013 recipient. Alexander and Wiggins are the only KU players to earn the accolade since the inception of the award in 1987.

In addition to his Naismith honor, Alexander and Oubre will participate in the McDonald’s All-America Game on April 2 at the United Center in Chicago. The duo was also named to the USA Basketball Junior National Select Team which will take on the World Select Team in the 2014 Nike Hoop Summit on April 12 at the Moda Center in Portland, Ore.

Big congrats to Big Cliff! A well-deserved honor.

Can't wait to have you in the crimson and blue.

Walter Bridges 7 years, 7 months ago

A question Jonathan, do you think Alexander will replace Ellis in the starting lineup? He may very well be the #1 pick in next year's draft unless JoJo sticks around another year. He is the only player who I think should stick around another year. Let Hundley do her magic and watch out NCAA.

Should have said the following year in 2015.. Pardon my mistake.

What can you say. The man can just flat out board.

Rodney Crain 7 years, 7 months ago

Is he eligible for this award? Seriously, though he played in the state tournament, has anyone heard if he was one of the 7 who were ineligible for Curie HS? If the NCAA does not clear him this will be like watching someone else get the last piece of cake. He could just go to the D league directly if he cannot play college ball.

Congrats on the award!!!

I'm here in Chicago, and I can't get the straight story. The coach was also suspended for a day and then reinstated. Remember Derrick Rose? There is much funny business up here. Chicago is a basketball factory. Some kids like Jabari Parker and Sherron Collins have their heads screwed on right, but you worry about so many others.

Rodney Crain 7 years, 7 months ago

Terry who are you directing this to? You got to be more clear buddy.

Walter Bridges 7 years, 7 months ago

It seems that if they had awarded him the High School Player of the Year then obviously he must have been eligible.

That stands as a simple logical reasoning which to give you credit Crain, normally you are not lacking but this time you are . My only problem is that if Jo Jo leaves, Myles Turner signs with KU. Another year with several OADs getting the majority of playing time while our bench suffers. Greene and Andrew White are the type of players in the past that Bill Self has been known to develop into starting players or at a minimum solid role players. All I see is another year with them languishing on the bench.

Let's not and emulate Kentucky. It worked for one season at Kentucky and we very nearly pulled off a major upset in 2011 NCAA Championship Game. At least one will transfer unless HCBS can talk Andrew White into redshiring and I think this is highly unlikely. Do what you do best Self. Develop players and for God's sake, find us a serviceable PG.

To those who think Jacque Vaughn would NOT have been a major contributor to this team and I believe would make the difference between a Sweet 16 and a Final Four team either doesn't understand the role of a pure PG. Just an opinion for what it's worth but a few facts to back it up. He averaged 10.6 points per game his junior year, 162 assists to 64 turnovers. He also quarterbacked the Jayhawks which had five players who had lasting careers in the NBA plus Billy Thomas who should have but never was picked up for a significant point of time. Anyone thinking Naa has done as good as a job is not being objective.

Depending on how we do in the Big 12 Tournament will be very important to any outside shot KU has a chance of a number one seed. Depending on who we play,we might end up losing three of our last four games and dropping to a three seed. The #1 seed does have its advantages but in the and, it's all about matchups. We could not match up against West Virginia and we will be playing far better teams in the tournament.

Fingers crossed, hoping for the best but fighting against their realistic opportunity.

Did not want to see that this was a slight to Turner. He would be an extremely valuable asset and with Lucas, Traylor, Ellis and Alexander, I imagine a dogfight for the starting position. Oh yeah.. Let's not forget Hunter Mickelson.

Everyone should check out the article on on miles turner. There's a brief interview. He really seems like a great kid. I'm super excited about Alexander, and still hopeful that Jo Jo comes back, but if he doesn't, I hope we also get turner. Super talented obviously, but also seems like a high character guy. Not saying that Alexander isn't; if self recruited him I'm sure he is, but I haven't seen an interview like this one with turner.

Walter Bridges 7 years, 7 months ago

From every source I found, all Turner is waiting for is Jo Jo's decision. Hope he stays but I am not panicking in anyway. Replace the #6 overall with the #5.

Rodney Crain he is eligible for this award, he was not included in the 7 players listed ineligible from Curie HS. Luckily!!

Rodney Crain 7 years, 7 months ago

Ok does anyone have a real source that Cliff is not included as one of the original 7 listed as ineligible? Drew the story you reference clears Cliff to play in ILS tournament, much lower standards. Not my actual question, ILS lets almost anyone in. So Drew Ummmm what else you got, cause the NCAA is going to be looking at those 7? If he was not one of them then he is cleared to play. I have seen nothing, on google or anywhere listing those 7 players.

Dirk Medema 7 years, 7 months ago

Not sure what ILS is, unless they changed the name of the IHSA. Cliff did play in the first game of tourney after Chicago Public League Championship - with a 0-25 record. Here's the ESPN article.

Rodney Crain 7 years, 7 months ago

Sorry ILS IL State poor wording IHSA is correct, still this article does not say he was not one of the 7 ineligible. There are two parts here, the 7 who were ineligible causing the lost season and the weaker IHSA that allows almost anyone to play, which some of the 7 qualified for by doing some paperwork and study work from what I can tell. Just trying to see if he was one of the original 7. 3 of the 7 played in the state tournament. Was Cliff one of the 3 that played? I hope he was not and all will be ok, I just cannot find anything that says he is.

Rodney Crain 7 years, 7 months ago

Get it right at least Terry, it was "Lighten up Francis"....

Terry it is a simple request. He is such a great player I would like to know if he is going to be able to play or not. Just looking for information.

In honor of Harold Ramis - Where's the great pay? Where's the travel? Where's the Winnebago

Elias Dunlavy 7 years, 7 months ago

I would love JoJo to stay but if he goes pro Myles Turner seems to have his head on straight and sounds like a kid we would want to represent the University of Kansas

Don Frey 7 years, 7 months ago

LJW reported Alexander is ok. Let's hope we get Turner. Paper says he is waiting to see if Embiid leaves.

Brandon Mahon 7 years, 7 months ago

So incase JoJo does stay what does the starting lineup look like next year. As much as we would love Turner we cant put Ellis at the 3 and as a Junior I don't think we should sit him. So with that being said does Alexander become first off the bench?

Joseph Bullock 7 years, 7 months ago

Cliff is eligible. Period! Don't be so negative and pessimistic! They would not award it, if he was not eligible, and since there are reports of who was ineligible, and his name was not listed there, it is common sense to realize he is fine. PS: I read a report on the situation, but I don't always try to remember exactly what reports I read, because I don't feel a need to have to 'Prove' things to anyone! Rock Chalk, Skeptical Hawk! LOL

Rodney Crain 7 years, 7 months ago

Joseph that is just it, there are no reports on the original 7 who were ineligible. When does the NCAA act with common sense? You read a report but do not remember it, so this does not help. Amazing...

Walter Bridges 7 years, 7 months ago

There was an editorial in the LGW by Keegan stating Alexander was in the clear. Not sure if that is the case but I sure hope so.

Beau Woolsey 7 years, 7 months ago

If cliff was ineligible we would all know he has too high a profile. Cliff seems to live and breathe crimson and blue on twitter, he seems like a great guy but not if you are a rim.

Rodney Crain 7 years, 7 months ago

Not necessarily they are not talking about the 7 who caused the loss of the season. Would like to know if Cliff is among them.

Adam Collins 7 years, 7 months ago

The closest thing I've been able to find is the fact that two of Curie's guards were deemed ineligible to play in the high school tournament coming up, but Alexander was deemed eligible. This obviously doesn't mean anything for his college eligibility, but does suggest he isn't one of the worst grade-wise. Here's a link to the report:

Walter Bridges 7 years, 7 months ago

Any chance one of those seven happens to be a PG?
