KU baseball walks off, shuts out BYU

? Tucker Tharp knocked in a single with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning against BYU on Saturday night to give the Kansas University baseball team an 11-10 walk-off victory.

The Jayhawks (3-0) beat the Cougars, 2-0, on Saturday morning behind the pitching duo of starter Robert Kahana and closer Jordan Piche’.

Just as the early game was dominated by defense — zero runs allowed by KU, three hits allowed by BYU — the nightcap was all about offense as the teams exchanged leads six times. Five Jayhawks had multiple hits in the game, including a 4-for-5 effort by Blair Beck.

“It was almost like we were playing with old aluminum bats the second game,” Tharp said. “Both teams combined for 34 hits I think and as far as being a team win, 17 hits basically says it all. Top to bottom, everybody did a great job and I was just fortunate in that last at bat.”

Michael Suiter managed just one hit in six at-bats for KU, but he made it count, blasting a three-run home run with two outs in the sixth inning.

“I told our guys when the game was over we scored 11 runs and 10 of them were with two outs,” KU coach Ritch Price said. “There were some huge hits in the ballgame.”

Kansas closes out its four-game series with BYU at noon on Monday.
