Kansas University is one of six finalists for Tyler Dorsey, a 6-foot-4 senior shooting guard from Maranatha High School in Pasadena, California.

Dorsey, who will attend the Oct. 10 Late Night in the Phog, has a list of KU, Arizona State, California, Colorado, Oregon and UNLV.

Rivals.com’s No. 19-ranked player will visit Oregon on Sept. 5, Colorado on Sept. 19 and Arizona State on Oct. 17. He also will set up a visit to Cal and visit UNLV unofficially, according to Dinos Trigonis, AAU coach of Dorsey with Belmont Shore AAU.

Dorsey has cut St. John’s, Georgetown, Louisville and UConn.

He had originally orally committed to Arizona but reopened his recruitment on June 14.

Also in recruiting, Jalen Brunson, a 6-1 senior point guard from Stevenson High in Lincolnshire, Illinois, is on an official visit to Illinois this weekend. Rivals.com’s No 15-rated player, who once had KU on his list, has also set up trips to Michigan State, Purdue, Temple and Villanova. Some analysts believe he may commit to Illinois following the weekend visit.

Didn't I hear someone else mention the term "combo guard" ?

Oh, yeah, the guy who coaches at KU ...

Jack Wilson 6 years, 2 months ago

Right, Self has also said "lead guard", "true point guard", and "small scoring guard."

Not sure these terms mean anything because he's used all of them so much, and whenever the situation dictates.

"combo guard': most overused description for defining a basketball players role.

Good thing you're not the coach, because Dorsey is a phenomenal talent.

Rodney Crain 6 years, 2 months ago

Don't buy into the hype. If he was that good KY would be interested. Also if he does not want to play for AZ that is a big red flag. Sounds like he has some baggage, like he is reading too much about how great he is, like you have. Also whenever you use the word "phenomenal" for a recruit I know for a fact that you are over reaching. I repeat with even more confidence pass, not interested. btw way see any video on Dorsey playing defense? You might rethink your comment.

I have watched Dorsey play in person and against good opponents. He has excellent skills. You don't know what you are talking about.

Rodney Crain 6 years, 2 months ago

I feel even better about what I said knowing you like him Robert.

Andy Hess 6 years, 2 months ago

Dude, you know NOTHING for a fact, except how to make blanket judgments based on nothing. Anyone who has watched the kid play knows he has skills. Why don't you stop trolling and actually watch some of his film.

Rodney Crain 6 years, 2 months ago

I Know enough Andy. Everyone who ever posts here makes blanket statements, especially about recruits. Save the hype please, we get enough of it on this site. Everybody gets all giddy about a recruit and guess what happens, they can't play defense, or their game does not translate to the college level, or they get all upset when they can't break into the starting lineup. If what I say bothers you, just close your eyes, click your heels three times and say there is no place like home, there is no place like home....this will keep you busy instead of thinking you can tell me what I can say. You don't know any more or less than me, be careful about that High horse you are on, you might fall off it one day!

@RC, you may be right on all counts, but.........you shouldn't use the term 'baggage' on a kid unless you have information to back it up. Kentucky (no doubt) recruits the best and often gets the best, but just because they aren't recruiting this kid doesn't mean we shouldn't. Who knows what Kentucky's needs are. The kid signed with Arizona and then changed his mind. That doesn't happen much with HS kids does it.......and defense.....really.....how many high school kids really play and work hard at defense? I'd suggest not many although they are out there. Anyway, if you want to play for Self you better play defense. Sounds like a solid prospect that we should look at and determine if he's a fit or not. Nothing more nothing less.

Rodney Crain 6 years, 2 months ago

Greg, typically when a recruit changes his mind, and has a revised list of mostly non-blue blood programs after turning down a top program something is going on. Either he thinks he is being slighted, he is listening to someone else telling him he can do better, he does not have confidence in himself, or any other thing we have seen. As you note teenagers are immature but on a decision this big they seek and have help to make them. Self does not steal recruits, at least to what I have seen. To me that means this prospect might not have the backbone to compete for minutes here. Especially if the rumors about him feeling entitled to minutes are true. We got enough on our plate without recruits like this.

Walter Bridges 6 years, 2 months ago

Sorry Rodney, I honestly don't know as much about this kid as others but basing his value on whether or not KY is recruiting him doesn't make sense. Kentucky recruits players for where there is the most need...just like we do.

For what it's worth, the general consensus is that Dorsey decommitted because AZ was recruiting over him. He had dropped in rankings after starting out in the top 10.

And on the point guard thing, Dorsey wants to play point -- one article says he "insists" on playing point. The article calls him a "rotten apple."

Of course, one never knows for sure. But recruiting just isn't as easy as saying this guy is a good fit just because he's ranked high. It's a good start, but isn't the know all, say all.

Self seems to be interested in the guy; but he ain't playin' point here. Something tells me that Svi might be the better option as Selden's replacement at the 2 in 2015-16.

Our single most important recruit is Carlton Bragg. If we can land him, everything is right in the world.

Walter Bridges 6 years, 2 months ago

He just cut Ohio State so it looks to be between KU and UK.

Ron Sterling 6 years, 2 months ago

There's zero mystery about Dorsey decommitting from Arizona. http://zagsblog.com/arizona/tyler-dorsey-remains-committed-to-arizona/ He got cut from the USA 18 team that Miller coaches on and shortly thereafter re-opened his commitment. Simple as that. Although UK never offered him, Duke did shortly before his original commitment, and UCONN was among the teams he cut now, so it's not like we're the only blue blood school that was interested.

Pass. I would prefer we sign players we actually are interested in. It is starting to feel like we are playing musical chairs and are left without a chair in recruiting. Other than Cliff and KO, which are excellent recruits, it seems we are scrambling the last 5 months here.

Jack Wilson 6 years, 2 months ago

Some think that the signing of Justin Simon, who by the way was also cut by Miller on the same team, led to Dorsey's departure. That is that both want to play point guard.

Well...even though some of us think the glass is half empty and some of us think the glass is half full, at least we all agree there is a glass!!!

I appreciate Hot Rod Frasier Crane taking on the roll of, as the French would say, Le Agent Provacateur..translated the Designated S##t Disturber.

I sometimes feel the term "Kansas finalist for [fill in the blank]", gives the recruit more juice than the recruit gives to Kansas. Let's wait and see..there will be only about another 1500 similar articles coming out in the next few months!!!

Rodney Crain 6 years, 2 months ago

Thanks for the shout out Tony. Although there is nothing random about who I reply to as Le Agent. Also I gladly represent the half empty team, but most of the people who reply to me are glass full people. There is no room at all in their glass for any comment that does not show unconditional love and admiration for anything about our team. Even a benign one like Pass, not interested.
