Kansas University signees Cliff Alexander and Kelly Oubre have been named first-team All-America by USA Today, the paper announced this week.

Oubre and Alexander were joined on the first team by national player of the year Jahlil Okafor, a Duke signee from Chicago’s Whitney Young High; Emmanuel Mudiay, a SMU signee from Dallas’ Prime Prep Academy and Stanley Johnson, an Arizona signee from Mater Dei High in Santa Ana, Calif.

Alexander, 6-foot-9, 240 pounds from Chicago Curie High, averaged 25 points and 16 rebounds in helping Curie to a 26-1 record. The squad officially finished 0-27 because of ineligible players. Oubre, 6-7, 190 from Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nev., averaged 22.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 2.5 assists a game. His team went 31-5.

Alexander, Oubre and blue-chip recruit Myles Turner will be playing for the USA in Saturday’s Nike Hoops Summit in Portland, Ore. Tip is 6 p.m. CDT, with a live telecast on ESPN2.

Other members of the U.S. team: Joel Berry II and Theo Pinson (North Carolina), Okafor, Justise Winslow and Tyus Jones (Duke), James Blackmon Jr. (Indiana), Johnson (Arizona) and Reid Travis (Stanford).

All-America: ESPN.com’s Jeff Goodman has named KU signee Alexander to his preseason All-America team for the 2014-15 season. Alexander was joined by Okafor, Georges Niang (Iowa State), Caris LeVert (Michigan) and Marcus Paige (North Carolina).

In-home with Newman: KU coaches Bill Self and Jerrance Howard conducted an in-home visit Thursday with Malik Newman, the No. 1-ranked player in the Class of 2015, according to jayhawkslant.com. Newman is a 6-3 combo guard from Callaway High in Jackson, Miss.

Watson update: Boston University transfer Maurice Watson Jr., a 5-10 sophomore guard, will visit Creighton this weekend, ESPN’s Goodman reports. He also plans to visit Illinois and Purdue, Goodman says. KU has been mentioned as a possibility.

Anderson OK: Former KU forward Braeden Anderson, who suffered a neck injury in a car crash last September and sat out the 2013-14 season, tells the Fresno Bee he has been cleared to resume “full-contact activities” at Fresno State.

The Alberta, Canada native told the Bee: “There’s really nothing like it, to see it up there on the screen when they’re showing you the X-rays of how it used to look and how it looks now and the things that they were looking for. To hear it from the surgeon, there’s nothing like that.”

Anderson suffered an injury to his cervical spine while riding in one of four vehicles involved in a Sept. 3 collision. Anderson had two surgeries at Stanford to fuse the vertebrae, the Bee reports. He couldn’t swallow or eat for 13 days, before and after the surgeries, and lost a lot of weight. He’s listed at 225 pounds.

“I’ve always been optimistic the whole time and trying to get myself ready to play,” Anderson told the Bee.

Wow. We are simply looking stacked next season. Come on down myles turner!!!

Joe Baker 5 years, 6 months ago

Why would he go to Texas and compete with Ridley and Ebeh? The 5 is now wide open at KU. He wouldn't have to compete for pt, maybe the position, but not pt. He'll definitely beat out Lucas and Mickelson. Lucas has shown that he's a good 6th 5 man off the bench. Mickelson, should have some great practice experience with Embiid, but he's as unproven as Turner. I didn't think Lucas proved too much either when he got what little pt he had during the season. He had a few defensive moments and little offensive production.

Self said Lucas was a "Load," but not too much about Mickelson. Lucas and Mickelson will actually compete for pt behind Turner. Turner is likely OAD, but he might stay 2 years. But, if he is OAD, Lucas and Mickelson will have a great Junior and Senior season respectively, or should.

Wasn't Wiggins a lock for anyone BUT KU last year?:) Nobody knows until they announce... Guess we'll wait and see how much Cliff gets in his ear at the Jordan Brand Classic and this weekend

Glenn Moore Jr 5 years, 6 months ago

So if turner comes and join the squad does that push ellis to the bench?

Ryan Zimmerman 5 years, 6 months ago

nope--- sounds like they want Alexander as a PF, so Ellis and Turner underneath

OAKVILLE ODDITIES:

1] Kelly Oubre's being named to the 1st team All America team may just improve his current yahoo #12 ranking just a tad, don't you think???

2] I am not saying that Myles won't end up at Texas, HOWEVER, if he was indeed a "lock", don't you think he would have declared by now?

3] Putting aside my Crimson and Blue glasses, which player would you rather have, Cliff or Jahlil? Jahlil is a fantasic player with a great upside but Cliff is a MAN!! He will bring a nastiness to the court we haven't seen since TRob left.

4] Myles just has to be fascinated by the possibility of playing next to Cliff in the post.

5] From the "Here We Go Again Dept"., if Kelly, Cliff and, assuming his coming to KU, Myles play up to their potential, we will set a KU record of 3 OADs in one season.......something I hoped I would never see! Throw in if Naadir rebounds for a strong senior season and Wayne leaves after two years as expected, Bill could potentially have to rebuild the entire starting lineup...AGAIN!!!

6] Braedon has had only bad luck if any luck at all. Also, whatever happened to Zach Peters?

7] Next season C, Turner [hopefully], Traylor, Lucas - PF. Alexander, Ellis, Mickelson - Wing, Oubre, Greene, White III [maybe?] - SG, Selden, Frankamp - PG, Mason, Tharpe [gulp :( ].

8] Watching Mizzou crumble before my eyes with basketball and football allegations galore only reinforces my feelings...no throwing of stones from this end!!

Andy Hess 5 years, 6 months ago

i think you've got Mickelson and Traylor mixed up. Traylor is generously listed at 6'8" and wouldn't be at center unless we were playing REALLY small. Mickelson is 6-10, 245, and more likely to play center than PF.

Andy Hess 5 years, 6 months ago

Traylor is generously listed at 6'8"and would not play center. Mickelson is 6'10" and is far better suited for C than PF. I think you've got them mixed up in your next season's predicted lineup.

6) Zach Peters ended up enrolling/transferring to Arizona. He played very sparingly this past season (a grand total of 31 minutes).

I've heard so many things about zach peters I don't know what to believe. I even heard he got in a scuffle with a teammate in jayhawk towers?

Just noticed that my 'comment was removed by the site staff for violation of the usage agreement.'

Not sure why. All is said was "congrats to Braeden on his recovery"

Does anyone have any insight as to why this would violate the usage agreement? It's truly incredible what he's come back from.

I guess you are not allowed to congratulate Braeden Anderson's recovery on this site! Weirdest thing ever Journal World!

Important Timeline:

Week of March 23rd - Selden announces his return

Week of March 30th - Wiggins makes announcement and declares for the NBA Draft

Week of April 6th - Embiid makes announcement and declares for the NBA Draft

Week of April 13th - Myles Turner will make his annuncement to attend KU

Just saying.

Big Cliff was well on his way to sweeping the top post season honors until the CPL jobbed him. He had stopped Young (and Okafor) in the City Championship and Montverde during the season. When the CPL got Alexander the Great out of the way, Young and Montverde were able to win the IHSA and the Dick's Sporting Goods National HS Championships, respectively. I hope Lunardi's bracket prediction holds with Kansas and Duke holding the 1 and 2 seeds in Houston next year. Big Cliff will have the National Stage to demonstrate his remarkable talents.

Myles Turner is not listed on any of the HS AA teams. www.sacbee.com/2014/04/10/6312757/usa...

I saw Turner play 3 times this year; HCYA (W 57-53; Same home school BMac and Justin Jackson played for), St. Johns (L 51-49) and the UIL first round vs. Coppell (L 47-43). My fervent conclusion is Turner needs Kansas far more than we need him. He is an Austin type player and is not on a OAD track, unless he comes to Kansas. The Kansas staff has a knack for spotting and history of developing talent. Turner needs to develop. Kansas is the lone school (LB certainly can ) that has shown the ability to develop talent. If Turner wants to end up in the NBA, Kansas and LB are by far his best choices.

Just thinking about the starting lineup next year is crazy, assuming we get turner and if the freshmen are ready to start..... PG- Tharpe (unless Mason can convince Self otherwise or a hidden transfer) SG- Seldon - Expect big things from him next year SF- Oubre or Ellis? PF- Alexander or Ellis? C- Turner

Jack Wilson 5 years, 6 months ago

Now the giddiness sets in. Let's just remember the past.

When Wiggins committed, oh my gosh, we were "loaded", right? Black was a savior simply because he was going to be wearing a KU uniform (notwithstanding his career stats). Frankamp was going to be nails from three point range (because he did well in a summer scrimmage). Selden was going to dominate because he has an "NBA ready" body.

This time of year we routinely forget that freshman are freshman, regardless of their talent level. One of the claimed most talented freshman in years .. Andrew Wiggins .. struggled to get his feet under him. He was not consistent. But he was terrific at times. Other times, he disappeared.

There is absolutely no reason to place these guys on a pedestal yet. None.

We were "stacked" last season, and had 10 losses and another early exit from the tournament. So I'm not too into "stacked."

Ian Emerson 5 years, 6 months ago

Stacked but unexperienced. Now stacked and experienced.

Mike Riches 5 years, 6 months ago

Is it possible that we may be better off without Turner? Cliff at the 5 and Ellis at the 4? Perhaps the bench isn't the best place for a junior with considerable playing experience in Self's system, not to mention our second leading scorer this past season? Am I way off in left field here?

Suzi Marshall 5 years, 6 months ago

HEM, we are going to struggle again mostly because we will probably be leaderless but I suspect we will be a lot tougher with Big Cliff and KO. Still we are loosing our two best defenders of a bad defensive team.

Selden shows great leadership qualities and if he can play the 1 that opens the 2 for some great with Oubre/Frankamp. Ellis has to learn to play the 3 because he is not tough enough for the 4 and Alexander will not be on the bench. We'll need some length at the 5 and if we don't get Turner, Mickelson will need to step up.

ALLOW ME TO REPEAT THE INQUIRY FROM YESTERDAY:

1] Is the reversed order of listing responses a new procedure or is there a glitch in the system???????

2] Why has the response feature been eliminated or at least temporarily neutralized???

3] Also, Mr. Fontaine's comment seemed perfectly fine and well within the bounds of acceptable opinion....why has this site suddenly gone weird???????

Brianna Zaleski 5 years, 6 months ago

I live in Wichita and was talking to a guy today who is close to some of Frankamp's friends. They insinuated to him that Connor is contemplating a transfer to Creighton. Surely this is hogwash? Has anybody heard that Connor might be frustrated with his situation and thinking about possibly leaving?

Suzi Marshall 5 years, 6 months ago

I certainly hope there is nothing to this. Self made some errors with Frankamp this year, notably the Stanford game.

Luca Rossi 5 years, 6 months ago

Why are people constantly trying to fix things that aren't broken????? Please change the site back to the way it was, the commenting setup was great the way it was. Now its just confusing to try and read in reverse order.

Jack Wilson 5 years, 6 months ago

Oak: Matt responded yesterday and said they were working on things so the site might have some glitches for a few days. By the way, Zach Peters was a very able cheerleader on the AZ bench this season -- minimal PT.

And to answer Mike's question, no, Turner would definitely make us better. As Suzi noted, we're losing our two best defenders. And Ellis (with Tharpe) has been a key weakness defensively. Cliff and Myles are both supposed to be "plus" defenders. But it would be odd to have Ellis coming off the bench. Not even a worry until Turner signs. I still think Texas, but that's just being a pessimist.

On comments getting zapped, Eric the Capn (or whatever his title is) routinely gets censored for no apparent reason as well.

Walter Bridges 5 years, 6 months ago

HEM, If not going to Kansas, what has delaying his decision done for Myles Turner? I can't believe it would have endeared him to any fan base waiting for his decision nor do I think this kid enjoys being the center of attention... At least I hope not.

I'll be glad when LJW fixes the site

Tony Bandle 5 years, 6 months ago

Thanks, Jack....removal of the individual response feature would be a HUGE mistake thus denigrating this site even more.

Rodney Crain 5 years, 6 months ago

I will be surprised if we do not get Turner. I also think Bill is hunting down a PG for next season too.

On the site changes with respect to comments, just a guess but I think they are trying to deploy some type of a upgrade to the comments section that would enable automated review and deletion of comments due to set parameters. As they deploy it some comments that are benign are getting removed by mistake and as they test it they have disabled replies to ensure a smaller data set. No idea why they would reverse the order of the posts unless it makes the testing easier to review???
