KU volleyball falls at No. 24 Creighton

— Freshman middle blocker Tayler Soucie slammed three block assists to help Kansas University fight off match point seven times against No. 24-ranked Creighton, but the Bluejays defeated the Jayhawks, 25-21, 15-25, 25-17, 29-27, on Tuesday night.

Creighton (5-1) defeated Kansas (4-3) for the first time in series history.

Soucie had 12 block assists, breaking KU’s match record of 11, set by teammate Caroline Jarmoc last season.

“We were not really focused in the first set, and then we played maybe our best set of the year,” KU coach Ray Bechard said. “But then you’ve got to come out of the locker room and back that up. Obviously, we didn’t have them ready in set three. We battled a little bit in set four, but you can’t dig a hole like that. It’s just disappointing that we can’t play more consistently at a high level against a good opponent.”

The Jayhawks outblocked the Bluejays, 18-16, but Creighton had the upper hand nearly everywhere else.

In her first start since leaving the UMKC match because of an injury, Chelsea Albers had 11 kills and nine digs and tied her career high with eight blocks. She led the team with a .348 attack percentage.

The Jayhawks will travel to Madison, Wis., to face Milwaukee and Wisconsin on Friday at the Inntowner Invitational. Kansas will play Bowling Green on Saturday.

Tough loss. The team does not seem to be as confident as they were last year. I know they are playing some tough road games but we have to start winning some of these to boost our RPI for the NCAA tourney!! Let's go ladies!

another bad start....for three straight matches we've lost the first set, and we rallied vs. Arkansas on the road.....but we can't do it again in the rematch, and now the road vs. Creighton.

i would like to think that they are a better team than us...but they had just been swept by Cal at home ...and they are 23rd ranked. Cal plays K-state this weekend...so there's a gauge there.

we're just a streaky team right now....we win sets 25-15 or 25-12...and lose 26-24, 25-23 or 29-27. in the close ones, we tend to stumble.

i'd like to think it's still early in the year...and we're settling in. we have an impressive new MB with the gal from Osawatomie...and the new gal from Gardner is learning the ropes too. we really need our vets and our defense to step up...and right now, it's falling short.

time for a new winning streak...we get Bowling Green and Wisconsin this weekend....then next weekend we host Notre Dame and Georgia...beat 'em all, and some momentum will be built for the league.

Go Jayhawks!
