KU volleyball rallies past Arkansas

By Staff Reports     Sep 6, 2013

? Despite a first-set loss and big deficit in the second, Kansas University rallied for a 3-2 volleyball victory over Arkansas on Thursday inside Barnhill Arena.

Fifth-year senior Catherine Carmichael had a career-high 19 kills in the Jayhawks’ 27-29, 25-22, 19-25, 25-17, 15-10 victory.

“We felt like we were in control in the first set and the third set, and those are the two we ended up losing,” KU coach Ray Bechard said. “Down 2-1 against a good team on the road, everyone contributed. I’m pretty proud of that effort. Hopefully, we can learn a lot. I think you need to be in a five-set situation on the road to really know what that feels like. It was good for us not only to experience it, but also to get a good result.”

The Jayhawks (4-1) lost the first set and trailed, 11-3, in the second before rallying with a 11-3 run of their own.

Junior outside hitter Sara McClinton had 14 kills, while fifth-year senior middle blocker Caroline Jarmoc contributed eight blocks against Arkansas (3-2).

Sophomore outside hitter Tiana Dockery finished the night a kill shy of a double-double with nine kills and 10 digs, while adding a season-high seven blocks.

Erin McNorton had a season-high 51 assists and eight digs.

Seniors Brianne Riley and Jaime Mathieu held it down in the back row.

Riley came up with a season-high 24 digs, and Mathieu had 11.

The Jayhawks will play host to Arkansas at 1 p.m. Saturday at Horejsi Center.
