Keegan honored as Kansas sportswriter of the year

Lawrence Journal-World sports editor Tom Keegan, now in his eighth year leading the sports department, has been named the Kansas sportswriter of the year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

The NSSA recognizes one writer and one broadcaster from each state every year and also hands out several national awards annually.

Keegan joins Journal-World sports writer Gary Bedore (2005) as current members of the staff to have won the honor. He will be recognized at the 54th Annual NSSA Awards Weekend, June 8-10 in Salisbury, N.C.

If you don't have something nice to say then don't say it at all. This is one of those times. Keep it classy out there.

Gotta love Keegan. He'll always give an unbiased and sometimes obscure view, no matter how much so many people on this site disagree with him. Congrats Tom.

Tom, Congrats, but the best part about this whole story is where the award is being presented...Salisbury, NC? Do yourself a favor, spend as little time as possible in Salisbury and go stay in Charlotte 30min to 40 mins away and just make the drive up to receive your award.

As you drive up to Salisbury, off exit 68 on 85 HWY towards China Grove is a BBQ place called Gary's BBQ. It's no KC BBQ, but for the Carolinas IMO its about as good as you can get.

And...if you stay in Charlotte...get you some Price's Chicken Coop. You can't go wrong.

Good job Tom, I have always enjoyed your articles and your enthusiasm for KU sports. Anyone who disagrees with you is not a true KU fan.

Way to go Tom!

Perhaps your experiences in conjunction with the award ceremony in NC can be memorialized in an upcoming chapter of "Double Chin Music"? You could even put together a Guy Fieri-like BBQ/brewsky road trip out of this!

Congratulations, Tom. You and your team, online and print, have a big responsibility; a classy school calls for classy sports coverage, and I think LJW does us proud. As a Kansan a long way from Lawrence, I really appreciate the web features you bring us. Without your articles and blogs I'd have a very hard time keeping my addiction fed! Many thanks.

Congratulations, Tom. You, and the rest of the sports staff at the LJW, continue to provide us with quality coverage commensurate with The University of Kansas and all of our athletic programs. Having recently moved from Kansas to Arizona, I am very appreciative of the work and the information you all provide for The Jayhawk Nation. Well done!!

Wow! Classy bunch today. I suppose all the haters feel a little humbled and are hiding out until this blows over.

Congrats Tom.

I love when sportscasters vote awards to themselves, or when they vote themselves into the hall of fame and things like that.

I would also think this is funny, since the day they announced this, was the same day ESPN had to acknowledge that they ran a story about an athlete without checking facts prior to publishing a story based on facts.

If you want to earn your award, why don't you go after the media Tom that published a story without facts, and then once they were found out; the reporter cited all of these things that didn't make sense and that he should have done a better job of fact checking before reporting. All of sudden the reporter talks about all of these inconsistencies, but rather than bring them up during the interview he waits until after a story breaks that they are false before actually do any type of investigation. It has been too often reporters report information without verification, it is becoming way to rampant in the sports world, and that would be a good article to write.

54 years of this award naming a sportswriter and sportscaster from each state. Maybe some names of previous Kansas winners in writing and broadcasting as well as who won the broadcasting award this year would have been nice.

Keegs, you piss me off sometimes but the ultimate complement to a writer is that he elicits an emotional response from his readers, so congrats to you on that...no one does it better....good or bad!! The ultimate complement, however, is you are never dull. :)

Hey, how many votes did jb get?

I think Matt Tait needs to seriously get looked at for this award in the future.

His coverage of the football program through thick and thin has been incredible; not to mention the fact that he's simply a great writer.

Allow me to throw Jesse Newell's hat into the ring as well. I totally agree on Tait The Great!!
