KU basketball notebook: Ex-Jayhawk Arthur injured again

Former Kansas University basketball forward Darrell Arthur of the Memphis Grizzlies, who sat out last season because of a torn right Achilles tendon, may miss some games during the upcoming 2012-13 campaign because of a broken bone in his left leg.

The Grizzlies announced Wednesday that the 6-foot-9, 24-year-old Arthur will be out of action four to six weeks after suffering a small, non-displaced fracture in his left fibula while working out Monday. The fifth-year pro will be evaluated on a weekly basis. The team said he could return ahead of schedule if symptom-free.

Arthur averaged 9.1 points and 4.2 rebounds a game while playing in 80 games during the 2010-11 season, his last injury-free season in the league.

Jackson in Jazz camp: The Utah Jazz announced the signing of former KU forward Darnell Jackson to a free agent contract on Wednesday. Terms were not disclosed. It’s a non-guaranteed contract, contingent on his making the team. Currently, the roster stands at 19 players. The 6-foot-9, 250-pound Jackson spent the 2011-12 season with BC Donetsk of the Ukraine-Superleague. He appeared in 14 games in the Eurocup averaging 8.6 points and 3.6 rebounds while shooting 57.1 percent from the field. In 35 games in the Ukrainian League, he averaged 7.8 points and 4.9 rebounds in 17.7 minutes. Jackson also attended the 2012 NBA Las Vegas Summer League with the Sacramento Kings. He averaged 3.0 points and 4.0 rebounds in five games.

Another Late Night visitor?: Joel Embiid, a 7-foot senior center from Rock School in Gainesville, Fla., tells Rivals.com he will likely attend the Oct. 12 Late Night in the Phog. Embiid, who is unranked nationally, is considering KU, UCLA, Florida, Louisville and others.

Other seniors expected for Late Night: No. 23-rated Wayne Selden, 6-5 combo guard, Tilton (N.H.) School; No. 5-rated Aaron Gordon, 6-8 forward, Archibishop Mitty High, San Jose, Calif.; No. 29 Tyler Roberson, 6-8 forward, Roselle (N.J.) Catholic; and No. 43 Karviar Shepherd, 6-10 center, Dallas Prime Prep Academy.

Peters update: No. 39-rated Roddy Peters, a 6-4 senior point guard from Suitland High in District Heights, Md., will visit UCLA on Oct. 5-7, Zagsblog.com reports. Peters, who visited Rutgers last weekend, also lists KU, Maryland, Xavier and Georgetown.

What an impressive list?

If my hypothesis that Self were getting the Norm Roberts treatment were wrong, then Self ought to at the least sign Karviar, Joel Embiid and maybe Selden from this group.

That would certainly consign my hypothesis to the ash heap.

And put us in ringville once again.

Agree, Jaybate. That's a very impressive list for Late Night in the Phog! And Embiid attending? That's news. I hadn't heard anything that Self had been in contact enough to make a positive impression. He would be a work in progress but a great get for the future because of his size, alone. Problem is, how much influence UCLA already has since the former Bruin, Moute .... ... .... (Never can remember his name) was the one that discovered him (I believe) and convinced him to attend one of his camps. Also, believe Florida was involved early. And being from Africa, Embiid may not like cold weather. KU's best chance will have to be his Late Night visit. Without that, I'd think it'd be a hopeless sell.

Can't remember where they're being kept, but if possible, keep "Naismith's Original BB Rules" handy as a selling point. It wouldn't hurt and would be bound to make a positive impression with this group of visitors.

When will one of the recent retired guys join forces with Bill...and be a big man assistant. Wayne Simeon would be ideal...but Pollard also? In terms of big men, we really need that rep to continue to get these guys to the center of the US.

I'd love to see Wayne-the-main-brain-Simeon become our big man coach, but I don't know if he's really that interested. I hope so, but I wouldn't be surprised if he felt that that'd take away from his ministries. That said, it's only a matter of time before Dooley or Townsend want to branch out, or Roberts wants to take another crack at a HC job.

The other former player that I think could one day be an excellent coach is Sherron. When it was his team he showed great poise and leadership. If you follow him on twitter, he's still got some maturing to do, but the base qualities of a good coach are there.

Agree with hetero: Collison would be the best. Big repertoire, better than Wayne's. You need a repertoire of moves. Something TRob was continually working on. The attitude part is supplied by none other than Bill Self (see Twins, Darnell Jackson, Kaun). He rides his bigs hard, to create that toughness in the paint that Self teams got, and Roy teams do not (by design, although individual players under Roy naturally may have arrived with nasty fire, or defense ability). Self still workin' Withey. Wait to see what he does to Ellis, unless Ellis is smart enough to "get it", and turn that switch on himself.
