Two former Texas Tech basketball assistants are being mentioned as possible replacements for Billy Gillispie, who resigned his Red Raider coaching position Thursday amid health concerns and allegations that he mistreated players.
Former UTEP and Nebraska head coach Doc Sadler, who is currently working as director of basketball operations at Kansas University, and North Texas assistant Rob Evans, former head coach at Mississippi and Arizona State, could be leading candidates, ESPN’s Andy Katz reports.
Sadler, who like KU coach Bill Self is a good friend of Gillispie’s, succeeded Gillispie at UTEP before heading to Nebraska.
“Sadler could come into a league that he knows extremely well after coaching in the Big 12 at Nebraska. He also understands West Texas as a longtime junior college coach who mined the area and had to recruit it again at UTEP,” Katz wrote on Friday at ESPN.com. ESPN.com’s Jason King and Dana O’Neil also have mentioned Sadler as a possibility at Tech.
Katz indicated that Evans could serve as interim until after the season, when current North Texas coach Tony Benford, a former Tech player, likely would be interested in pursuing the opening.
Katz also mentioned former New Mexico State coach Reggie Theus, a current assistant with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
“Theus would give the Red Raiders a name, like Sadler, and infuse energy in the program after a troubled season,” Katz wrote of Theus, who has no Texas Tech ties.
Texas Tech university spokesman Blayne Beal told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal on Friday that Tech would like to name an interim coach within the next two weeks. Chris Walker, associate head coach under Gillispie, is now in charge of the day-to-day operations of the program.
Self and his staff have a policy of not commenting on possible interest in job vacancies.
Jackson with Jazz: Former KU forward Darnell Jackson will attend preseason training camp of the Utah Jazz. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that Jackson does not have a guaranteed contract. He played for the Sacramento Kings’ summer-league team this past July after playing in Ukraine last season.
Peters adds KU to list: Roddy Peters, a 6-4 senior point guard from Suitland High in District Heights, Md., has KU on his revised list of prospective colleges, CBSsports.com reports. Peters, who is ranked No. 39 nationally by Rivals.com, is visiting Rutgers this weekend. He is also considering Maryland, Georgetown, UCLA and Xavier, with Maryland the heavy favorite.

Seems like the Jazz are probably a tough front line to crack Good to see the interest from Roddy Don't know how much any of those guys want to be named "interim" coach at TT, sounds like a great way to pile up some losses on your resume

I really like Doc and I wish the best for him and I realize that director of basketball operations is just a stepping stone but I don't want to lose him before our season even begins. Can we really get someone to fill in this quickly on short notice and actually do a decent job. I remember the team always talking about all the stuff Hinson did and it might be a little daunting to someone just a month away from the beginning of basketball season.

What happened to Billy Gillispie? I thought he was the biggest challenge for HCBS and was the 2nd best coach in the Big 12 He made Texas A&M a tough game for KU. Hired by UK then the implosion. I don't get it.

I don't know either. He went into Kentucky as a winning coach, and came out a beaten man. I don't know what they did to him there, but it made a drastic difference in his life.

Well, he had a pretty well documented bout with alcoholism. It's awfully corrosive. I don't know how bad everything really was, but it does look awful for him. Whatever goes on in his life from here, I hope he gets the help he needs.

If Doc should toss his cap in the ring for that TT gig, he would do so with full awareness that he is stepping into another football mecca where recruiting would be difficult, and hoops tradition miserable. If he could get 4 years of guaranteed decent money, he probably would be set for life, financially, then could slide back in to an assistant's role. It appears that he got the shaft at Nebraska. At a time when their athletic budget won a huge bonus, they cut him loose from a chance to earn respectable dollars.

Saw the reference to Roddy Peters above.. konkeyDong was on this yesterday.
The article above cites that Maryland is the "heavy favorite." However, the recent articles and information seem to indicate otherwise. The article (presumably) cited at CBS above states that Peters made it clear that there is no favorite:

Further, this from ESPN yesterday -- Turgeon is "all in" on the Harrison twins (which isn't necessarily new news). But if you're Peters, you don't go where the Harrison twins are going, do you? Here's what was at ESPN:
"Peters is on Rutgers' campus as we speak. On Oct. 6, he’s set to visit UCLA. There are all kinds of moving parts here. Does UCLA still get that visit? What about Maryland? It’s pretty clear the Terps are all-in on the Harrison twins (Andrew and Aaron), and now KU comes in.
Kansas was right to reach out to Peters. The late-developing point guard is the No. 3 available player at his position. Coach Bill Self would like to add another guard to play with Conner Frankamp (Wichita, Kan./North) and be a primary ball handler. Peters is one of the few options Self has in terms of adding a guy who views himself as a setup man and not a scorer or combo guard.
Let’s say Kansas doesn’t land Peters or Jackson. Could it reach out to Stevie Clark (Oklahoma City, Okla./Quest Academy)? Maybe, but his primary strengths mirror Frankamp's. Both are noted long distance shooters. Self loves his guys who can get in the lane and penetrate, thus making Jackson and Peters important to KU's 2013 recruiting efforts."

Is Peters better at the point than Connor Frankamp? I like his height at 6'4 but other than that, I would rather see us sign another big.
In all honestly, the kid is from Maryland and even if he says there is no heavy favorite, I'm sure they were always the front runner. The Harrison twins are probably one and done anyways so I give Turgeon the edge. Even with all that, I would be glad if he picked Kansas.
Always good to have options.
I'm glad we have HCBS making these decisions.

Agree. And just to give equal discussion to the "talent" side of the recruiting biz, Self has said many times he will take whatever top talented kids he can get to "feel like they would fit in" to the atmosphere at KU. I think he is consciously trying to cast a bigger/wider "net". A top 50 kid is a good addition to the "list". But I do believe there are several kids on Self's radar that we fans know nothing about...(which is why I tend to display, sometimes defensively, more "faith" than the next Jayhawk fan or alum). I was fairly skeptical at the start of last year's no-depth team, regarding our chances in the Madness--but Self proved me wrong. I never posted that skepticism at that time, as I consider such detrimental as a set of ku players are fighting/struggling the real battles way more than any vicarious "pain" I might feel as a bystander. (Applies to ftball program now, which 'skeptical' isnt the correct sentiment. More like take 6-deep-breaths of "patience". Love Weis, but not hired to win in 2012...just lay foundation, then recruit BIG next 2yrs and see what kind of product we have. Weis gets a lot more time/patience than Gill. Gill needed to go for too many reasons.) Sorry to digress. RCJH.

I've learned over the past few years to gaze past the recruiting news because it's really a waste of time. We recruit 50, talk to 10, get one or two. That's probably a fairly consistent ratio. Sometimes we get hot and land a few in a row, but spending time reading up on every single "possible commit" just gets old. Sports junkies can have the endless speculation of 18 year old kids with social media, but I'm out. I'll be back when the real season starts. Kilgatron

He'd make more money, but he'd sure work for it. The players seem to be a bunch of losers who make it even more difficult by complaining to their moms when they get pushed a little bit. How long has it been since TT won a decent number of games?

I think it would be great for Doc Sadler if he got the TT job. His teams at a primarily football focused school were disciplined, tough, and well coached. He got a great deal from his talent, and you had better come ready to play. From what I can tell he has great character. The difference between Nebraska and TT is that NU really believes it can field a powerhouse basketbal program, and one in football, also. Texas Tech wants a solidly competitive program that can be at least everything he was able to accomplish at Nebraska. I think he would be a great fit there. I promise you, giving a little time under Doc, the annual pilgramage to the outback of west Texas would have the KU faithful on the edge of their sits hoping to get out with a win. The strength of the league from top to bottom, while not noticed, is an important factor in KU recruiting. We need the weak teams in the league to get better. Rising waters float all boats.

Apparently the Harrionson Twins want to go to UK, but their father wants them to pick Maryland. On top of that, the Twins seem to think it's a big deal to commit first. I don't know why, but whatever. James Young, however, is probably going to decide here shortly, and if he picks UK first, that might be enough for Mr. Harrison to convince his boys to go to Maryland. If that happens, that'd move the needle on Roddy Peters in our favor, making UCLA the next biggest competitor.
UCLA already has Zach Levine and their next biggest target is Rysheed Jordan, a former KU target. Nonetheless, Georgetown is probably the biggest competitor for Peters services being both local and not having yet picked up a PG for the class of 2013. The only other PG on the roster is a senior, so they can offer locality and instant playing time.
Long and short, Peters sounds good, but I don't see it in the cards for this one. There's just too much that needs to go right. I really want to know now if Barber's commit was because of the Louisville situation. I've heard the rumor but haven't seen anything close to concrete on it. If anyone else is in-the-know, please share. Barber had already cut local schools, so I have a hard time believing being close to home was the major factor in his decision, especially given the timing.

If Young's decides on UK, it wont affect the twins decision. On the other side, the reclassification of Wiggins which will be announced shortly is what will change the recruiting front.

Sadler can't coach, I have seen him here in Nebr. and he is not a coach. That's why NU hired him in the first place, as NU doesn't know anything about basketball. He will not do any better at TT. then he did at NU. TT, move on from Sad Sack Sadler.

Hey, Doc was fortunate ever to get his kids a timeslot in the training facility at Lincoln. The guy was a welltrod doormat for the Husker pigskin crazies. I've a relative who has been a longtime fanatical supporter of NU football. He always sneered derisively when I tried to inject hoops comments into family conversations. "Who gives a damn about basketball?" was his typical putdown re Big 12 hoops. He and his ilk would never ever commit a nickel of support to Doc's efforts or program. Check out the disparity between Sadler's NU salary and that of his football cohorts. Just imagine how that attitude trickled down to everything basketball in HuskerLand, from high school athletic focus right down to recruiting budgets for the state university hoops program.

Its a crap job but I know I would take it. Make some bank, maybe get that horrible school to mediocrity and then "retire" early on the contract to be replaced with someone else. That is about all you can do there unless you are a true miracle worker.
Doc, though, might be thinking differently. He spent enough time mired at a school that doesn't invest in the program. At least at KU he is at a school where people are aware we have a basketball team.
